One thing you missed on the Elvis connection. Elvis was madly in love with Anita Carter, he even proposed to her a couple of times but she turned him dow. Prior to that Hank Williams pursued Anita, but, Maybelle ran him off.

It was Anita who originally performed & recorded the song 'Ring of Fire' (12:40) as a folk composition. As a vocalist, Anita was in the same class as Judith Durham. Exceptional.

I agree. It's unfair how Vivian is looked as "the other woman" and June is such a saint. Vivian simply wanted a husband to stay at home more and help raise their daughters, while Cash just wanted to have his wild times on the road We all have regrets and Cash wrote that missing his daughters growing up was one of them.

I'll never forget the day I met Johnny Cash in person. He was so nice and loved that I loved his music and was there to see his show. This was right after his major heart attack. He really made some good jokes about it, too. After all his songs his last song was, "Old Rugged Cross." It had everyone in tears. It was amazing. He certainly had a story to tell.

John and June were deeply in love, but their relationship was very, very complex. Around 1980, Johnny’s addictions were back with a vengeance (he was probably only really sober from around 1972-1978). He fired his long term bassist. May have had an affair. And June moved to England to live with her daughter (who was married to Nick Lowe). They did patch things up, but it was not easy. In the 90s, Johnny was in very poor health and June developed a pills addiction herself. Yes, they were in love until the end, but it’s also not the storybook fairy tale often depicted in media. (John Carter Cash himself was an addict by his early teens too, having been around all of this conflict).

Did Johnny have an older brother that was accidentally killed in real life like they depicted in the movie, Walk The Line? In the movie the dad said, “he wished it was him who died and not the other son.” I’m curious, and I’ll try and look it up online, but if that was true that would explain a lot of his messed up behaviors in life with the pills.

@@angeleyes1000yes he did. Some kind of fence machine tore his stomach open. Quite brutal. The pills addiction I’d attribute more to the life of a touring musician in the 50s. They had to drive over night between shows, so all took uppers to keep going. Then they’d need downers to sleep when they got home. Get stuck in a cycle, and then you’re addicted. Happened to basically all of the Sun artists (Elvis, and check out the car accident that sidelined Carl Perkins’ career, for two examples).

Cash's "2 guitarists" have names. Luther Perkins and Marshall Grant who would go on to play bass. They gave Cash the sound that made him popular. Also, they met as soon as Cash returned home from the air force not a year into his marriage.

Should have never left his first love and beautiful wife. Married 2nd wife June for the fame and status. She was deliberate with her nasty actions towards Vivian. I have no respect for that one.. Although Jonny was a coward he still spent his last days with his first love Vivian.

Viven seemed wonderful. I think of Johnny and Viven quite often being in Nashville and observing the music scene here. My favorite couple is Dolly Parton and Carl Dean. I did another Roots Rockumentary on Dolly Parton and was surprised it hardly has gotten any views! But I talked about Dolly's life and love with Carl Dean there quite a bit. kzitem.info/news/bejne/jpihnp6wpIFlhG0

Well everyone is entitles to their opinion. However, Vivian wanted Johnny to stop his music (truly his first Love), he didn't and in the end She Left Him!!! Not sure what ya mean by he shouldn't have left her? If he did, the world would have very little of his music and we'd all have missed out on a truly great artist. Even Cash's daughters have said that Vivian and Johnny had a very toxic relationship. Is it not better to leave someone who you may love and love deeply if it hurts them and all of those around, especially this kids? Both Vivian and Johnny ended up with marriages that lasted till the end. Nobody talks about Vivian's second husband who helped raise the girls and was a good hard working man. They loved one another, even Roseanne had stated he was good for her mother. Guess my point is, nobody knows what happens behind closed doors, we change as we get older, some either grow together or grow apart. Leaving is a very tough decision that people don't do lightly, only the people involved can make that choice and in the end have never seen one couple get back together later on where it stuck. In this case from all the information gathered, would say both made the right choice.

P.S. i only recently learned about the Carter sisters and their mother, and i can't get enough of them. i did read that while touring with Johnny, Anita got pregnant with his child.. which she aborted out of respect for June who was pregnant with son John. Evidently it is not clearly proven... but it made me very sad. Anita struck me as an angel.. and June was extremely funny and always smiling and laughing. if this did happen, it would not surprise me in the world of music and touring...

Oh my word! That's the kind of thing you just don't want to believe but of course there's a chance it is true! I love music and I love making these videos but one thing that always has rubbed me the wrong way is how many affairs occur in the music industry. It's just plain upsetting. While I do love the Johnny and June love story, I even feel an immense amount of sadness for Vivien and Carl Smith and the failure that went on in both of their first marriages. I hope you subscribe and like some of the other videos, too! I love making these and hope you love watching them just as much!

Remember the first generation of the Carter family were there right at the beginning of AM radio. There was no before them. Might have been the first country, folk and gospel music to ever go out over the airwaves in the rural South.
