D700 is one of the best cameras all time. Full stop. I've got one I bought recently as my second camera ( I have a fujifilm as my main camera but always have a second which I change every 3-6 months). I won't be changing my d700! I may get a d850 though as they are dropping in price as people head for mirrorless. Beautiful family btw.

Goooodd comment! Matsushita manufactured the sensor for the D700. Now I dont know if the sensor supplier changed at all during its run, but this is why everyone loved the output of the 700 so much. The three cameras I will always keep and use, until they die, are the D200, 300, and the 700. PEACE

I've been shooting the Canon 5d classic for the last year or so and it is an incredible body. I primarily use Olympus OM glass on mine, which is really fun and a cheap way to get primes. I am very tempted by some cheap D700 bodies out there, to go with a couple of cheap Nikon primes I have. I think I'll do it to compare how the Nikon full frame legend stands up to the Canon. Thanks for the vid.

Since moving from film to digital I was initially with Fuji (6900z) then Olympus (E20 then E300) but moved to Nikon due to the interchangeable lenses I had from my film body legacy (FM2n F-301 N70x). The digital bodies I went with over the following years were D70s & D300, D5100 & D5300. About 3 year back I got a D700 for full exploitation of the legacy lenses incuding my 20mm f2.8 manual Nikkor. Wanting a little more resolution for wide landscape and architectural shots and realising that a Canon full frame with adapters would allow for use of my Nikkon AI glass and my Olympus OM Zuiko film glass. I went with a tidy 21Mp 5D mk2 for £225 GBP with 12k shutter count. Mk2 for the extra res and the video capability. Now also have a 10Mp 40D APS-C body (cost £25 18k shutter count). Use Canons with Tamron AF film era zooms 28-80 & 80-200 and OM Zuiko 35mm f2.8, 50mm f1.8 & 85mm f2 as well as Nikkor 20mm, Vivitar 90mm f2.5 macro. The D700 is definitely the more solid piece of kit and IMO easier to use and has focus confirm with manual legacy lenses that the Canons do not.. the Canon focus screens are usable and the live view zoomed focus check is a bit easier to access than that on the D700. All in all excellent kit choice. The 40D shutter sounds like pure nostalgia wrapped in silk! Happy snapping. 😊

Hi Sam! I remember the Nikon D300 and it also, kind of had that saturated colors and really nice black tones you mentioned coming out of the D3. I sold all my prime lenses and went for a Tamron 17 - 50mm f2.8 after I saw the high iso shots from the D300. Maybe not the smartest thing to do.. and after 8 months i also sold the Nikon D300. I think I after that judged image quality like; if it is as good as the Nikon D300 then it is good enough". I got the Canon 5D some years ago for like 200 bucks and it is very nice, but it is so damn big & heavy. OK, you inspired me to use it so I will, Promise.

Hi Jens! Thanks for sharing your experiences, it seems we have traveled similar roads through our camera journeys! I too had a Nikon D300. It was a superb camera and I actually had it before the D700. As I explained on my blog, I was actually able to use the D300 as collateral towards the D700 because the seller was willing to take trade plus cash for the D700. If it weren't for that, I was perfectly happy with the image quality of the D300. It also had great high ISOs capabilities for its time, as you mentioned. That Tamron you got is a nice lens! The 5D is quite a big and heavy thing in today's world especially when compared to modern mirrorless equivalents. But yeah I hope you put it to use and harness its capabilities. I enjoyed reading your experiences, thanks so much for the wonderful write up!

Congrats on the D700! Thanks for sharing your experiences. I'm generally a prime lens guy. The 50mm lives on my D700 most of the time but I've gotten great results with the older 60mm f/2.8 AF-D macro and the 85mm f/1.4 AF-D is superb for portraits. The best zoom I have used on the D700 is the 24-70mm f/2.8 AF-S. I took a chance on a heavily used but cheap (as in $250) copy and it's probably the sharpest zoom I've ever used! Also had great results with the older 35mm f/2 AIS manual focus lens. Have fun with your D700 and hope this helps.

Thanks! I'm not sure what your requirements are but for general stuff the 24-120mm VR lenses are good budget choices. For longer I found the 70-200mm VR AF-S excellent when I used to do stage work. The 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6 VR was great for zoo and wildlife despite the slowish aperture. If you don't mind a non VR I found the old 28-200mm AF to be a great all around lens. Every Canon 5D video I looked at, it looks like it's got a ridiculous warm temperature. So much orange and yellow. In black and white, its character looks better. Now why do people love 5D? I think it's got that "creamy" or in my parlance "oil painting like" rendition of colors, thick. The other cameras that deliver this "thickness" is Leica. But Leica is more color accurate and very very blue. Canon 5D is very yellow/orange. To be honest, I find 5D's color a bit distastefully orange.
@cameralegend1033
6 ай бұрын
I appreciate your honest assessment and I know what you mean. I'm not sure why but certain cameras from that time period had similar "warmness" to the images, off the bat I think to the Nikon D70 or D1X. The Leica does deliver a cooler thicker image as you mentioned. The Nikon D700 has that "thick" look, I think it depends on one's preferences. Believe it or not over the years I've noticed a lot of people having a liking to this warm look and maybe the 5D images automatically evoke some kind of nostalgia.

@@mikede2464 It could have been an oversight yes. I'm not sure how many cameras in 2005 had it. One would have to go back and do a lot of checking on the different cameras that may have had it. What is actually "film like"? CCD for sure. CCDs actually often look less saturated , grainy, a little faded. What is film if it doesn't fade? That's the whole point of being film. The fading making it "nostalgic" automatically. That gives the actual film look. Canon 5D is not "film like", it's more "oil painting like". Now, that doesn't mean I am dissing the 5D. I like the "creamy rich" look, too, Leica like. So I am buying the 5D since it's cheap. But to be honest, my Nikon D80 and D50 is a lot more "film" like.
@cameralegend1033
6 ай бұрын
I think the term "film like" could be a broad spectrum thing and this is why I actually don't like using the term as much as I used to. For example, a lot depends on one's personal experiences. Back in the day, high ISO to me was Kodak Gold 1000. From the prints and photos I still have, the 5D Classic files at high ISOs are a close match to that film when shot indoors in available light or at night. With all the yellowness, oil painting grain or what have you. That is what Kodak Gold 1000 in the right lighting looks like and that's why the 5D could be "film like" to me but for others who used, say Fuji Velvia or Reala, it is not film like to them. I hope I'm making sense. A lot of what one sees as "film like" comes from what their personal experience of what film is. Appreciate your comments, it's an interesting and debatable topic no doubt!
@CO8848_2

@@cameralegend1033 I see. I was a Kodak 100, 200, and 400 user, never used 1000. Can't afford that much film back then and experience is limited. I do agree they were slightly warm. Used Fuji film a little, but not as much. Will try out the 5D when it gets here from KEH.

@@CO8848_2 Cool! Have fun. Try it at low ISOs, in good light, with a good lens. Resolution and details should be good. It should look better than an oil painting. @@cameralegend1033 Well I have it for 2 days. Where do I find it film like? The grains, especially at higher ISO, yes, that's nice. The warmness - I am not a fan, neither is my wife. Her very first comment: "why is the picture so yellow"? See, I am not the only one. But if I custom white balance, it's pretty decent. Still warm, but acceptable. The AWB is a bit too warm vs. custom white balance. What I find really "characteristic" of the image, is what Cartesian call "creamy"-ness, what I call "thickness" or "oil-painting" like. That's not a negative term, in fact, that's a positive term. It's got a look, certainly. In great lighting, it looks nice. Although, on a personal level, I still prefer my CCD's nostalgic look more. But given its price and good results without too much efforts (it doesn't seem to need tweaking for the good-light photos), I think it's a very fun camera to have.
@cameralegend1033
6 ай бұрын
@@CO8848_2 Thanks for the update, wow that was fast! Yes the warmth is something that's not to everyone's liking. I think it's probably a combination of the way the sensor is tuned and a primitive auto white balance. In fact a lot of digital cameras, especially from that era, and even now exhibit this. For example if you have take photos indoors at night with standard house lighting and you have white walls a lot of digital cameras tend to turn the image yellow. That's why on my Contax TVS Digital review, I spoke of how impressed I was that a digicam from 2002 does not do this. But I think most people whether they love or hate it, would agree that the 5D Classic has a certain look or character to the images. Whether it's the warmth, the oil painting as you said, or the matte paper like I said it's got a look to it that's distinctive. The 5D Mark II that came afterwards had a technically better image but to me it looked bland, boring, maybe a more "generic" digital look. It took me time to love the 5DII. Appreciate your assessment! I'd say you're off to a good start with the 5D Classic if you have it for a couple of days and don't absolutely hate it. It can only get better from here. Custom WB helps, as you have done. You could also try to desauturate if the image is too yellow and maybe get a more filmic look. Part of the fun of these older cameras is to try to tame their flaws or somehow make it work. Wow that was a long one! 😂 Bottom line, enjoy the camera! 👍
