Overall a fair representation. The "two Pope problem" disappears when one recognizes exactly what this gentleman said...the Papacy is a role that one steps into, and can under certain circumstances, step out of. It's quite obvious that Pope Benedict has no designs to compete or attempt to "co-reign" with whoever the newly elected Pope will be.

As a former Catholic, I really appreciate Mr. Oliver's thoughtful and respectful commentary. Most of the coverage of the papal election process is downright laughable because the media seems to be oblivious to the difference between the selection of a pope and an average political election.

I'm not Roman Catholic, but I can appreciate the perspective that God can work through our human means of decision making. I am reminded of Acts 15, where the church decided upon a a matter of great doctrinal and practical importance simply by getting together and arguing it out. To be sure, the will of God was done that day.

The very existence of the conclave is such a strong reminder that the Church is human, not divine. It becomes so palpable the fact that deacons are just as capable of knowing God's will as we are. Brady's question exposes one of the weaknesses of the Catholic Church: pretending to be something it's not. The Church is not a link between God and us. If God wanted to have a human representative on Earth, and if their sub-representatives were able to know His will, there'd be no need for a vote.
@ljm792

I find it interesting that the justification for the nature of the conclave is vary similar to a justification you might hear for fascism. Please do not think I am trying to pick a fight, I'm just musing that the balance between transparency and democracy & order and unity is one of the big struggles in the creation of different governing systems. The draw backs of inefficiency and division are what many people who have believed in and fought for fascism were looking to avoid.

To the (classic) question we heard at 2:55 ff., there is a more straightforward answer than the one given by Simon Oliver. None of the sacraments, including the Order, confers impeccability. The priesthood is a vocation: so, the real question is not why isn't a priest impeccable but whether or not he has the vocation. To my deep sorrow (I'm a Catholic), we may very well doubt about the vocation of many priests, particularly those who were ordained in these last decades...

No. The reason it is called a "Theory" is because in the scientific community the word "Theory" means a set of tested principles that can be used to predict future outcomes. Gravity is also a Theory.

The Bible teaches that the casting of lots is the method of choosing Church leaders, although we have some choice in those who are selected. When we vote, we are attempting to do it based on our own understanding. Acts 1_26 And they gave lots for them; and the lot fell upon Matthias; and he was numbered with the eleven apostles.

There would be no argument. Benedict renounced his office, and that was the end of his papacy. He cannot claim 'oh it was just an error' the renunciation was canonically and theologically binding, Francis is upon the chair. Some people think infallibility of the Pope speaks of his moral character or his own judgement, this is untrue. It simply speaks of the inability for a false doctrine to be defined by someone who holds that office, the roof may cave in and crush him if it is necessary.

On another note, your own comment thread title "NeedsEvidence" seems to be steeped in simplistic philosophical precepts of 'positivism', 'radical skepticism' (which reduces to uselessness), and 'scientism' (the philosophical position that science is the only means of knowledge, which refutes itself as the claim is a metaphysical/philosophical one which it can't defend).

To be fair, a lot of Catholic doctrine and dogma has a rather tenuous link to Scripture (if at all) and some aspects (e.g. transsubstantiation) conflict with modern understanding of chemistry. Ultimately, the decision made by the Cardinals is a personal one, based on who they think will be the best match for the role from what little they've seen of each other (most Cardinals only ever meet during papal funerals and conclaves). Ratzinger is now officially Pope Emeritus (pontifex emeritus).

We don't. To reason about anything, we need to start with some assertions we assume to be true, otherwise logic will lead us nowhere. Mathematicians call those assumptions axioms, physicists call those principles, and theologians call them dogmas.

Just trying to be fair here. Brady asked some endearing questions in a extremely crude manner. Shouldn't interviews be about *exploring the subject matter* and not about making the interviewee as uncomfortable and assertively belligerent as possible. I'm just saying, particularly at the beginning of the interview, he could of been less detached and much less contemptuous.

You are misunderstanding the use of the word theory. The word theory in The Theory of Evolution is not used in the familiar sense, that of an unproven guess, that is more properly termed a hypothesis, and theory, in scientific terms is an explanation of fact, such as the Theory of Gravity. There are no "problems" with the Theory of Evolution, as a matter of fact, the more we look the better it matches. Darwin came up with the Theory before we discovered DNA, DNA proved evolution conclusively.

I don't think we can... You will require an infinite amount of evidence in order to be absolutely certain of anything, and we cannot have infinite when we are finite beings. We can determine what is probably true, but we cannot determine what is absolutely true. We live in a probabilistic universe (on a quantum scale) and a deterministic world (on a local scale)

It was decided in the Catholic church in the middle ages that the teachings of priests 'gone bad' were still valid, because otherwise the population would be afraid that they were at risk and maybe turn to a rival, heretic group. Also in the middle ages there was often a pope and an antipope, the result of differences in doctrine, conflict between pope and emperor and everybody declaring everybody else a heretic.
