I had the pleasure of watching a family of these charming little falcons grow up at my old house. Hearing them chattering and screeching in the morning....watching them hunt....Seeing the little ones take their first flight. The pair stayed in my backyard shed for about 3 yrs. This video brought back such fond memories!

Feel bad for both the mistress and Mrs. Thixendale. The mistress was young and naive and didn't know what she was doing, but Mr. Thixendale just left her with 5 kids to raise on her own, and she ended up having to feed two of them to the other 3. And Mrs. Thixendale didn't know her husband was out fertilizing some other chicks eggs while she was raising their 5 kids. The worst part is Mr. Thixendale ended up benefitting from it anyway.

That was awesome that you were able to capture two nests at once. Mr. Thixendale did not really raise 8 chicks as the mistress had to take over that nest by herself. So all he did was mate with two females and take care of one nest! What a sorry male and I bet Mrs. Thixendale never knew about the mistress. It was enjoyable to watch :-) Thank you for sharing Robert. 🌷🥰 ❤️ 🥰 ❤️ 🌷

If you paid attention to the video, Robert clearly writes that the male still visits the mistress’ nest, but does so infrequently. Also, why didn’t Robert step in to supplement the mistress’ nest, as he is clearly seeing firsthand in real time that two of the chicks were dying from hunger in there??!

In wildlife research it’s important to let nature take its course as much as possible, even though it’s sad. Casualties are common in nature, in all animals. Very few birds actually survive to adulthood comparative to the amount of eggs laid each year, and most species flourish nonetheless. Also, if Robert intervened every time, I’m sure that would spread his food reserves a bit thin, which would be a detriment to the animals he does rescue.

@@anti-ethniccleansing465 Infrequently enough for her to have to feed two of the young to the others. She never would have made that sacrifice if they weren't so malnourished and starving that they were all going to die had she not done it! So no her wasn't really visiting the younger bird. I'm thinking Robert may have been away while he was catching this on film. I have a feeling he would have stepped in if he knew about it when it was happening. He didn't know she was going to feed them to the others. They weren't active dying when she did it. She probably just knew it would get there. He may have been giving the male another day to step up.

A superb video Robert and it's great to watch your nest cams. However, it is very common, particularly with raptors, for the male to 'service' more than one female. I watched two Hen harrier nests with young last season with both females serviced by the same male. Their nests were a few MILES apart and one female would have to wait several hours for the male to return to 'their' nest and bring her food.

Did she actually kill the runts or did they just starve to death? Is this common amongst Kestrels to feed their siblings to the others? I wonder if Peregrines do this also.
@pLanetstarBerry
6 жыл бұрын
Not sure about the mother in the video, but lots of birds-of-prey species cannibalize weaker siblings to feed the stronger ones in times of stress. Most times it's the stronger sibling doing the killing, but it wouldn't be unusual for parents to do this as well. And it's doesn't just happen if there's a food shortage. Sometimes they'll cannibalize hatchlings who have died through illness or starvation, partially for food partially to keep the nest clean. Granted this usually doesn't happen when the birds have adequate food, but when times are tough times are tough. Researchers tend to view this behavior as a lifeboat strategy, kind of similar to when humans engage in cannibalism when placed in extreme survival situations.
