My mum worked in an airport terminal at LHR. John Wayne was in the shop to buy UK chocolate telling my mum (who had nearly fainted with shock) he just loved British chocolate and chatted away to my mum for at least ten mins even signing his autograph for her. She came home from work and as a child, I remember how she went on for weeks and weeks about him and how kind he was. Mum passed away aged 92 just 18 months ago and she still chatted to everyone about the day she met John Wayne. RIP. Both 🙏🏻❤️

Back in 1978 a friend of mine and I got to spend an afternoon with John Wayne on his boat, the Wild Goose. I found him to be personable, generous, and thoughtful, a genuine person rather than a self-important Hollywood actor. We talked about boats, salmon fishing (a huge passion for him), and everything else...but NOT about acting & movies. He just reveled in being a regular guy, hanging out with other regular guys. I have to tell you, he was one of the nicest, most genuine people I've ever had the pleasure to meet.

Mr. Wayne approached me (geez he was big to a 9 year old) and he was the most decent kind man to us. He gave me a signed production book of the movie and one of the bullets from his gun belt. Duke Morrison the heavyweight boxing champ a few years ago was interestingly enough John Wayne's cousin. In none of his films did he ever once shoot, rape, or smack around or punch out a woman like you see all the time these days which is what I believe was what Mr. Russo meant by non-toxic. Pretty much everybody he shot was in self-defense from somebody else trying to shoot him or one of his friends which you sort of need to do to win a war or stop heavily armed violent criminals from murdering people. John Wayne, has given hours apon hours of entertainment to millions. My daughter is twenty three and has been brought up watching the dukes movies. There are a lot of people who are considered heroes or icons. Who have actually done a lot worse than made comments, that are deemed unacceptable today. There's no campaign's to remove their names from places named after them, so stop the mud slinging at John Wayne and remember he has a family that are still alive. Have some some respect.

We need more people in Hollywood like John Wayne. Like him or hate him. He wasn’t a perfect man but he loved his fans passionately and he fiercely loved his country. He always made time to talk to his fans or sign an autograph. I had the great pleasure to meet him in the late 60’s when I was a kid. I was little and he lifted me up in his arms and treated me like I was his own. He signed an autograph while holding me and he was very gracious to my father. It was very sad to see him at the Oscars shortly before he died. He will always be my favorite actor and hold a special place in my heart. RIP Duke. I miss you to this day.

But I note with interest Mr. [John] Wayne, for example, has none of these compulsions and none of these compunctions. Mr. Wayne, he gets up on every public podium and he says, "Drive 'em, hit 'em, kill 'em. Knock off the dink, kill the gook, do this, do that." @@raymonddavis1370 good advice,TAKE IT! when you read the ENTIRE interview the context goes far beyond " I believe in white Supremacy" the next word takes you to what he was talking about..." until"....... Duke believed in self discipline and taking responsibility for your actions..And that 'political power/academic power/ business power/ etc. should not be just handed to someone-ANYONE- who could not demonstrate he/she/it was worthy of it. Would you want to be operated on by a surgeon who was not qualified on merit, but on skin color? If I remember correctly, this interview took place during the civil unrest events of late sixties-early seventies. I myself was accosted by a group of SDS 'multiracial' whacko's one night in a parking structure at UCLA. They would've killed me but for the timely intervention of a black football player (whom i will not name) who took them all on alone, thrashed most of them severely, then carried AT SPEED, my 195 lbs. or so, clear across campus to the med center emergency room. U COULD say he saved my life (I have). I didn't care that he was black, he could have been green, red, brown, whatever. WHAT HE WAS, was the right man in the right place at the right time and I will remain eternally grateful that HE wasn't 'rascist' as so many now seem to be. Similarly DUKE knew and respected a great many black's he'd come to know in the movie industry, and in the pretty much 'hidden' world of the very wealthy (and very cultured lives) of the black aristocracy that has existed in this country for well over a hundred years now; who have penetrated and succeed in pretty much EVERY facet of every industry, etc. that exists here, and yet have chosen to remain, with few exceptions, hidden from the public gaze. He was CLEARLY not speaking about them, but rather about those who hadn't yet earned the positions, they'd 'demanded' be 'given' to them. One last thing, I was at the Harvard Law School when they were doing their 'racial' profiling for admissions. You want to know who was the MOST incensed about the practice of admitting unqualified candidates on the basis of color? It was almost without exception, the minority students who HAD done the work, gotten the grades, and passed the exams to get there ON THEIR OWN MERIT!. They were incensed as once the practice was disclosed and became a cause celeb, it lumped THEM into the under qualified group in the eyes of potential employers thus limiting their potential careers.

As a child i knew the DUKE personally. he was my Uncle Mair. i never knew him as a movie star until later in life. Uncle Mair was my grampa and grammas extremely close friend. and although we were not blood related I loved him just the same. My gramma died in 1977 and Uncle Mair was at the funeral sittin next to me and my mom. a little more than 2 years later I sat with my mom once again at a private funeral service for my Uncle Mair. Regardless of his views on certain things throughout his life, he was an awesome man. He cared for people no matter what color or creed. He believed in the proverbial AMERICAN LIFE, but he also strongly believed in the AMERICAN DREAM for all. It pained me deeply when the likes of Sharon Osbourne and others in Hollywood disgraced him and his name the way they did. And on top of that demanded an incredibly disrespectful change made because their feelings were hurt. That shows the ignorance and the selfishness that we all as humans must face everyday now. It's deplorable to try and erase ANY KIND of history because 1 or even many don't like it. Just because a person speaks their minds does NOT warrant them to be labeled in any fashion. Everyone is entitled to their own opinions and beliefs. Yet everyone is in such a big hurry to label someone else a racist, or a leftist, or whatever stupid ass name one can think up. This has got to stop. My Uncle Mair wouldn't have condoned any of what is going on in today's world. I know this in my heart and my soul. I was 12 years old when the DUKE died. It was one of the saddest days in my life. He was a wonderful uncle. He was a wonderful man. And I will do everything in my power to make sure the world knows that. Hollywood sucks!
