No need for anti sieze on caliper bolts. He should have used silicone brake grease for the pins. If anything goes onto the braket bolts it should be loctite. The factory uses it on every caliper bracket bolt for a reason. It will seal out the water and or rust. Woody you yourself, Jr as well and the 20+ people who liked your comment shoudl head over to SMA to learn how to do a proper brake job. 2 suggestions: stop using chrome sockets for impact guns and don't use extensions with an impact gun, use a deep impact socket (you lose a shitload of torque in the play between the extension square and the socket). Tekton off Amazon works great.
@eksine

nothing wrong with chrome sockets for impacts, the impact sockets are made of the same metal anyways
@someusername121

@@eksine Completely wrong. Impact sockets are thicker wall and a softer metal. Chrome sockets on an impact can crack/explode, deliver less torque, and shed its plating.

@@someusername121 NO YOU are completely wrong. I assumed the same thing. I looked at my so called "impact sockets" and my nicer chrome ones. same metal, chrome vanadium. I prefer vanadium over moly because if anything moly would tend to more explode
@Mj-yi8od
5 жыл бұрын
someusername121 is correct. I've been a mechanic and in the automotive industry for fifteen years and based on using impact sockets every day and observing other mechanics, the impact sockets rarely break. The chrome sockets will split down the middle or blow up on impact guns. I have never looked into the difference between the sockets because I've seen the difference in the real world. No profesional would ever use a chrome socket on an impact gun and definitely not without wearing safety glasses unless they don't value their eyesight.
@eksine
5 жыл бұрын
@@Mj-yi8od actually we are both correct. when he said thicker wall I looked it up. chrome moly is softer so they make it with thicker walls, that must be what he's seeing. however harbor freight's impact is the same metal as their chrome ones, cro vanadium. I looked it up on amazon in case you call harbor freight as a place that only sells shit. nope, other companies using the cheaper vanadium too. so conclusion we both right. I also looked up failures and moly can also shatter. in the end it's how it was made or heat treated.

Couple tips for ya... #1 Jack stands is a must #2 those bolts weren't impacted on, most probable cause is the rust as to why they're so tight, and lastly #3, before assuming the gauge cluster is the issue, inspect the Speedo cable, since it's mechanical.. it could be separating causing your Speedo to go wacky

If its a mechanical speedo it may just need a cable replacement... (like many older cars Ive owned.) the cable looks like a tv antenna cable; it'll thread into the back of the gauge and trace through the firewall to the front hub area (usually the drivers side hub but I have seen a few done to the passengers side hub) where it will thread into the hub somewhere behind the brake brackets. Ive had a lot of vw beetles over the years and their speedos do the exact same thing when the cable is broken internally. (they jump around when driven and stop randomly where ever it feels like stopping lol...) not sure if geo used the old style units but ya never know.

That airhammer drill you're using can kill the threads. Get some decent penetrating oil, and lots of torque with a long extention rod. Slowly force the bolt lose. When you feel it starts to move, then tighten it lightly right away. Do this a few times and you are more guaranteed to get that bolt out.

I am not an expert, but I'd have used the floor jack to lift then drop on blocks (I use 2ft sections of railroad ties). Don't trust jack stands - '73 Caddy sheared off the cotter pins while I was replacing the starter. Lug nuts, Dad was a tire repair guy, after using impact wrench he'd give them a couple turns on/off with four square lug wrench. The secret, use good steel lug wrench and carry a 2-3ft section of pipe for extra leverage, also use lithium grease on lug nuts - especially in Minnesota salted roads - so they do not seize to bolts.

If the speedometer is cable driven pull it out of the transmission and see if the cable is frayed or something inside by just turning it by hand and see if you feel any resistance, Could also hook up a drill to it and see what happens. When I remove a caliper bracket or caliper I turn the wheel out to get a full swing on the bolts. I notice no mention of lubing the guide pins? Why bleed the brakes? About all that achieves is the pig don't go right on the ground if it falls off the jack you will still get hit on the head if you are unlucky ! That speedo might be the inner cable sticking in the outer or where the drive goes in the back, sometimes re lubing the cable / the drive input might fix it. Did you break a clip off when you took it out for cleaning, if so the drive alignment might be off causing it to not turn free in the drive housing and bind up to. I've had loads of cable drive tractor tachs do goofy things over the years with those kinda problems causing it. At least the brakes work now, thanks for the update, Take care guys.
