Both outstanding power makers, but only one dominated pro stock 5 years in a row and forced GM to make the DRCE. Bob Glidden's BOSS 429s gave him 5 championships in a row and was the last dominant engine in what was left of TRUE Pro STOCK drag racing. Also, Ohio George Montgomery's TT BOSS powered 69 Mustang was eventually banned by the sanctioning body in 1975 because it decimated the HEMIs on the back half.

Both engines were grossly underrated. The Boss was closer to 500 horsepower and so was the 426 HEMI. I recently saw a video where a rebuilt to a close to stock as possible 426 HEMI denied out at 495 Horsepower at 5800 RPM. Like I said, under rated.

It's a shame, as time goes on, these presenters doing videos of these legendary engines that are part of racing/high performance history get more and more of the information wrong. These experts that got it off the web somewhere else. These mistakes get passed along through these videos to the people who believe EVERYTHING that's on the internet, and soon many of the truths about these pieces of history are lost forever. Effing Shame.

426 Hemi was always slow on the eighth mile but would come alive and catch up on the final stretch. 440 and others would gap it on the eighth.

@@HighHosilver I don't know Where you got your information from but, whoever told you the Ports in a Boss are smaller than a Hemi must not ever have looked at a Boss 429, the Boss port is the largest port ever used on a Production engine bar none. The street Boss was built to homologate the engine into the NASCAR rule book. The Street hemi was built to win at NHRA drag races. That is why the Boss is mild and the Hemi is Wild.

The Boss 9 came from the factory with valve springs that limited RPMs to 5000. A Carburetor that was too small and exhaust manifolds were restrictive. This was to keep warranty claims low on the street driven cars. There was huge potential in them with the correct parts and Ford did offer them. Headers weren't exactly easy in the tight engine bay, a Carburetor swap wasn't real tough. Replacing valve springs was a whole different level of dedication most customers weren't interested in.

Ok, after reading all the comments, all I can say is that I sure am glad that all these motors and cars were there! We grew up in an unimaginably awesome time! I feel very blessed to have grown up in this amazing country in the 50’s, 60’s, and 70’s. It’s like a problem of riches.

I agree with many commenters that the amount of errors is a bit too much. Most of them about the Boss niner. Almost all Boss 429 motors went into Mustangs while just 2 went into Cougars. Any Torinos were non Kar Kraft cars. The Boss 429 was indeed a Hemi but was shrouded on both sides of the chamber. Machine off the shrouding and you had a full hemi chamber. The plug location part you got right. Both engines were stout but factory rating as presented were way low. In Racing trim both would easily hover in the 550-600 hp range. The Boss was far more restricted for the street for liability, reliability and the rise of emission concerns where as the Mopar Hemi was a very old design and built when emissions weren't as big of a deal. Excellent topic, but the research is annoyingly flawed. Would have been nice to feature the 427 SOHC which was also a Hemi, also rare and so strong it was banned from NASCAR to prevent escalation of the deviation from "Stock" motors.

From what I remember, the Boss 429 was a disappointment on the street and the dragstrips. If you sunk a boatload of money into them, they may have been competitive, but out of the factory they were not very impressive vs the hype they received. Maybe I'm wrong, but.....

the intake ports on a Boss 429 are large enough to park a truck in! i don't know what engine this guy is talking about! He is right full of BS! the Boss cars where Faster than the Hemi until Dodge came out with an Aero package. NASCAR Stopped Ford from using there Streamline cars. The reason the Street Boss was not as potent as a hemi Ford detuned the engine to make sure it would last on the street.

@@mylanmiller9656 Absolutely right! The street version was simply a place holder to get the Boss into NASCAR. Street Boss was 10.5 compression, NASCAR was near 14:1. Anyone knowledgeable in the Boss 429 knows the "head" gasket was a MAJOR pain! Does 'Rotunda' ring a bell?

@@M21-w1y Yes, that is what I was referring to when I said "Head" gasket. As a young man, I had the joy of helping replace the block in a Boss 429 Mustang due to a thrown rod through the block. Many, many O rings to seal every passage into the head from the block.

The 426 hemi used solid cam from 64-69. 70-71 hyd cam. The street hemi is not same as race hemi. It’s designed for shifting at 7200 rpm. Go look up the ASE engineer paper Chrysler turned in. The 426 hemi is a nascar engine adapted to drag racing. I have bunch of 426 hemis. You should redo this video and get your facts at 100%.

Why was the Buick Stage I so effective against the Hemi? I know it was a two bolt main making the motor 70 lbs lighter but that’s not enough to win so convincingly (2 car plus) in a 1/4 mile. I think the answer lies in the cam shaft and carburetor(s). If Chrysler went with a solid lifter cam (high rpm’s) and a single 850 cfm carburetor with aluminum manifold it would have helped immensely.

That's because viewers get bored with very long videos. They watch a few seconds and click off. Viewers habit have therefore forced video publishers to limit the length of videos. If you stay longer on videos and the algorithm communicates this feedback to the publishers and so many others do the same, the publishers would notice and extend the duration. For now, it's a worldwide observation that viewers do not stay long watching videos and this forces video contents not to be long. With love from Nigeria

Boss 429 was disappointing. So was the 429CJ. Good results were achieved with the CJ valves fitted to the 429 PI head and port matched to the CJ intake. I'm kinda of a Ford guy, but without a ton of work, I'd pick the hemi.

The real appeal, as always, is scarcity. Ford's BOSS 429 and Chrylser's Hemi were low production volume engines at the top of each manufacturer's line up. Many Chrysler performance cars are worth a little more than their cross town rivals all these years later because few were sold originally and as a result fewer survive to this day. Low production engine options make the cars that have just that much more valuable years later. It breaks down pretty easily and predictably. Virtually any Barracuda or Challenger from back in the original Muscle Car era will fetch more money than a Mustang or Camaro this is most comparable. Really rare high end engine options close the gap though in many cases. The BOSS 429 Mustangs are a good example of how this works. An L88 Corvette or ZL1 Camaro also highlight the few Ford and Chevy cars that fetch the bigger dollars along side those Hemi Cuda's and Challengers.

The street motor was a Semi Hemi not a full hemi. It had a quench or flat areas on eather side of the Hemi dome whitch stoped it from being a full Hemi dome . And the coments are correct the heads are not cast iron .

@@M21-w1y The boss was a semi hemi I had one since it was two years old . Had the motor apart many times . Stock factory heads had the flat spots in the dome . Most every one back then was takeing them out to make the full hemi .

Mopar actually patented the Hemi name, so Ford couldn't use it, despite having hemispheric heads. They wete sometimes called "semi-hemi" or "crescent" heads too. Fun fact: you can use 426 Hemi connecting rods in the Ford Boss 429.

Put a good set of heads stock ported ,or john kase heads.the dodge pos hemi will get destroyed. The 426 hemi is extremely aggravating to work on with the plug design and thousand dollar headers that dont even fit the mopar engine bay made for the slant 6.better off with the ford or a big block oldsmobile or chevy.

you are talking a king and a slave...........the boss 429 was a dog!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! it ran 15 seconds plus. the intake ports pooled gas it did not run well and you couldent get many miles out the motor it was a poor design and it was a headache for anyone who owned it. we laughed at the 429 it would lose to just about anything on the street. why dont you compare it to a vega with a 4 cylinder engine........that might be a close race!

If the Boss 429 is considered a dog, its because the dog was chained up. Its took very little work to wake up the street Boss. I love both engines, but in NASCAR the Niner was a bit stronger on long tracks due to a more modern design. Tuning is a key factor. I've seen Hemi's lose to Chevys due to poor tuning. Your comments are hyperbolic due to your emotion support of the Hemi. Not realistic.

Obviously, the bloke speaking is a Mopar fan dribbling a huge load. The BOSS 429 beat the 426. 375hp underrated for insurance reasons. Do you really think it only made 375 & don`t give me the 428 was quicker over the 1/4mile, this wasn`t built for the 1/4mile, it was built for 3rd & 4th gear high speed oval racing. Race over a full mile & watch what happens.
