My favorite part was when he made the speed limit slower on a long, straight street and the cars actually followed it. As a traffic engineer, if you make a straight road and lower the speed limit without a change to the geometry (lane width, curves, etc), you've just pretty much created a speed trap cuz ain't nobody driving slower without feeling physically uncomfortable.

To be honest I feel they MASSIVELY missed the mark with only covering buses regarding pedestrian roads. It would've been so easy to simply 'check' for the associated DLC's and unlock extra content based on if you have that DLC. Kind of a shame. Though it DOES seem that bicycles CAN use pedestrian roads which is nice. Also, pedestrian roads that intersect with a normal road as a T junction create pedestrian crossings. Which is nice.

Yeah, it is kind of an arbitrary limitation that is a bit of a bummer. I'm guessing this would be easy on the PC and difficult on consoles, and probably why it didn't happen. Still, glad they can use it. I'm kind of wondering how banning biking on sidewalks would impact ped districts....

When you talk about the university being controversial, I think it's actually a lot more realistic for many parts of the world. My local university comprises a complex of maybe 2-3 of the buildings you have in the campus in this video, but they're all butted together along one street. It's about the same footprint as the new university in this DLC, maybe 50% larger at most. It currently serves over 25,000 students, so I think the capacity is accurate. That sprawling campus is larger than the entire CBD of our capital city. I guess it's realistic for some countries with wealthier tertiary institutes and cheaper land but that's the one that seems unrealistic to me
@Bethgael
2 жыл бұрын
We also have the concept of satellites from each university here in Australia. So, UQ St Lucia and Griffith U campuses are a sprawl like the traditional Oxfordian model that the USA has followed, and then satellite campuses for UQ at the hospital and Griffith's in the city are 1-building heavy density small campus like the pedestrian one here. Location proscribes size.
@simongeard4824
2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, there are two universities in downtown Auckland where I live... the larger of the two is roughly four blocks, the smaller maybe half that. They're not small places, but being space-constrained, they've both grown upward more than outward... That said, the new one seems excessive at game scale. 10k capacity isn't unreasonable in a real-world city of over a million people - but on CS scale, you're basically cramming a tenth of the population of a large metropolis into a single building. Might be a bit crowded...

The university in my city was just classes held in ordinary wooden houses until the late 70's, so they tore some of them down and squeezed in new buildings as they needed more space-- by now you can run around the main campus in probably 5 minutes and it serves almost 15k students. It's a really strange mix of architecture and while they try to modernise it's just adding to the chaos-- but it's very charming. There are also smaller campuses in other parts of the city because they ran out of space, those are much more cohesive. If we have 15 minutes between lectures on opposite sides of the campus, I'll be able to drop by a toilet and possibly buy a coffee on the way there and still not be in a rush. I feel American universities are the strange ones on a world wide basis, a big part of that being them being built very deliberately and in "fake" old styles to make them look more historic, and spacing everything out to make it seem much larger too. And the whole "college town" thing in America with whole towns essentially just being a big campus, is something I haven't seen anywhere else-- at least not in Europe. Then there is that whole uni/college sports stuff, that's definitely not something you see here.

That new university is clearly the Gallifreyan Institute of Technology, which is why it’s so much bigger on the inside. I will probably pick this one up. Too bad about no support for trams, monorails,etc. or for combining with parks/campuses. I understand the need to avoid dependencies with other DLC though.

This episode gave me a massive realisation moment. And looking back on it I feel so stupid for not realising it sooner. “If you slow down traffic you increase the capacity of the roadway” I had been using all the fast motorways and roads to basically get people to places quicker, to get congestion out of the way. Move cars out faster and the area will clear. When actually all I did is create some kind of car based rail gun and shot all the cars into one area. It then comes to a halt at slower roads.

Have yet to properly start a city to be honest, and I was thinking I might give myself some motivation and direction by watching Tutoria from the beginning again. The DLC does make me curious though if you can make a city that's some 80-90% pedestrian area oriented? Have some high capacity arterial roads and some areas where some city services and other things that may need standard roads are set up, but otherwise make the city primarily with pedestrian roads with bus corridors, metro, and maybe a monorail or two that encircle major blocks. Sounds like an interesting design challenge, and maybe not one I should do my my first city, tempting as it is.

Nice video as always. Hate to be that realism guy, but IMO this takes a big step in the direction of pure fantasy cities. There is a reason why pedestrian zones IRL mostly tend to be only one or two streets deep. And even these often have time-restricted vehicle access. The goods deliveries and other needed tradespeople access of such a large area could never be accomplished by a handful of „service building vans“…not to mention the impossibility of renovating/rebuilding anything in the center of a pedestrian zone of this size.

This never occurred to me but holy shit, yeah you actually could. Theme park next to a pedestrian area with tourism and leisure subzones.

@@sleeplesson could go further too, use road restrictions and light industry to create "backstage" areas. decorate buildings in such a way (though probably need to PO things) to create large dark rides and moving theatres etc.

I can't wait for modders to make PnP roads that are compatible with other DLCs. I definitely need Ped/Tram, Ped/Monorail, and Ped/Bike Lane roads. In fact, I need Pedestrian/Monorail/Bike Lane roads. Give me all of the above. I'm ready. I want to make a city with no personal vehicles.

They need to add a snap to road system for painting districts, should have been added a while ago but now with speed limits based or districts it's definitely needed

I bet the Vanilla Roads + mod or something similar will have some pedestrian roads with more transit options; bike, monorail, tram, etc., in the near future.

I've only had a short time with Plazas and Promenades. If I go down to a first person view and start a walk though a pedestrianised area, my character can't walk between the bollards protecting a pedestrianised zone and has to walk around them. I can't apply a pedestrianised zone inside a Campus area, which is a pity as many Uni's have large traffic free plazas and footpaths. Sometimes I've had the game crash which is corrected by a game cache flush, most irritating the first time it happened after several hours of play. But, hey its early days yet and hopefully patches will correct some of this.

Thanks for another great tutorial. I hope one day I can share my version of diamond coast with you. I wouldn’t be a player of the game if it wasn’t for your city of turoria.

The pedestrian access point asset seems useless. The barriers at the end of the pedestrian paths lower to let public services through, I saw that when I followed a hearse with the first person camera mod. If it's truly needed to restrict vehicle access, I wish they would have used better proportions with that asset. It's a PITA to place for those of us that don't like "imminent domain" 😅

god coconut trees are soooo annoying, sometimes when I’m trying to find parking and I see an open space I think perfect open parking spot but then I’ll look around I noticed it’s a coconut tree and that’s why it’s empty because the coconuts will fall on your car and dent it, also someone in my neighborhood ones had a coconut fall on their head and I think they went to the hospital (i live in Oahu, hawaii)

I noticed you have a song! 25:36 I didn’t know you dabbled in music that’s awesome. Is that your first? I’d totally listen to it/them!
