The Vibrato side of a CE-1 makes for a fairly decent fast Leslie, with the depth set to match the setting on the Chorus side. This makes the foot switch between them (as on the larger unit here) like having the fast and slow Leslie speeds, albeit without the ramping. In the heat of battle it still works quite well.

Hey there, I have the Restro-Sonic that seems to clip too easily on input with noticeable, albeit just, distortion in my amp speaker. Subtle, but enough to wonder if I actually blew a speaker at first. I have contacted the manufacturer and he says it's a bad chip.... but if I was interested in sending it in, he would give me the address... Of course, I want it fixed, and attempted several times to contact him for the address to no avail (not sure why he didn't just include his address in his initial email response). So I'm giving up and looking for replacements. Top contenders (I want stereo)... Past FX Deluxe Chorus Ensemble, (or save money and get the MN307 version???) Past FX PX65, and the Analog Man Chorus (with stereo mod). I know these are all different flavors, my preference is for the CE-1 style, but not at the expense of too much clipping. Is this something you experience? I notice in this video the clipping light is going crazy, but I don't really hear the clipping. On my RS pedal, it's noticeable audibly with hotter pickups (R6 withP-90s). When I first got the pedal (recently) I didn't notice any clipping because I was mainly playing a Strat or Jazzmaster with vintage low-output pickups... But as soon as I plugged in the Les Paul, I thought I had blown a speaker (as I mentioned). I bought the RS used and I can still return it to the seller if I don't find a solution to fix it. This is all so frustrating, as I'm waiting for a solution with my Chorus before I can have my pedal board built. Right now all my pedals are on a hand towel on the basement floor so I don't scratch them up. Have you compared the MN3007 version of the deluxe with the 70s chips? I have read that they sound identical, and if that's the case why would anybody want to spend for the older chips at a higher cost? If there's a noticeable difference, I'm not opposed to spending a little more. Thanks for any input.
@mattgilbert7347

I don't think that the MXR can compare to the PastFX. Being able to monitor the input gain to control the clipping is a real bonus and seems like it would be very useful for you. It sounds sooo good!

I'm of the strict opinion that EVERY pedal should have a boost/preamp circuit onboard. The deluxe memory man, the Korg SDD's, the good old modulation pedals like the CE-1...they all gave you the ability to further color your sound, or to set it low and fairly neutral. This is kind of a given for drives, but for all the other things in an effects chain it ensures that you'll be adding to the tone while never being troubled with the tone suck syndrome.

@darwinsaye
Жыл бұрын
Totally agree. Not so much about a boost that is I just a hot level to the output, but an internal preamp that distorts in the pedal itself, like in the CE-1. I bought the Deluxe Memory Man over other choices largely because of the ability to drive it’s own preamp. I also have an old 1970s Shin Ei Wah pedal (the regular wah, not the fuzz-wah) that actually has a little bit of inherent drive in the tone when you switch it on, probably due just to the old weak circuits. Very cool.

Concerning the preamp of CE-1: On my own unit I didn´t like, that the wet part of it was clipping earlier than the dry part. So I went adventurous on my own risk (being no tech - rather let a tech do this..!) but was successfull by luck, finding a place inside - after preamp but before modulation - where I could reduce the input level to the modulation by soldering in a small resistor. I checked out the right value (while loopin a signal in), until the relation/reduction sounded right to me... ´lujah! 😇

I have a theory that the much-loved "Symphonic" patch on the SPX90 was modeled after the CE-1's chorus (other than it being real stereo instead of wet/dry). Even the name 'symphonic' kinda gives it away. They both have that thick, soupy swirl and flange-like sweep. And it would make sense, because the CE-1 was pretty much the industry standard for chorus, along with the Dimension D. Yeah, the CE-2 was the most popular chorus pedal, and most analog chorus circuits are derived from it, but its use is pretty much limited to guitar, and I'm sure most of the chorus sounds on studio recordings were done with either a CE-1/Jazz Chorus or a Dimension D (not to mention the Eventide harmonizers or the ubiquitous tri-stereo chorus).
@LeonTodd
2 жыл бұрын
You'll find this interesting. A buddy of mine did some in depth analysis on the Symphonic patch of my SPX90 and came back to me with this; "It's a 3 voice chorus, almost exactly like the tri-stereo chorus type in the chorus block. However, it's modulated by at least 2 LFOs, hence it being so random. It takes almost 17 seconds for it to get back to its starting point. The reason it sounds a bit like a flanger, is because the min delay times are so short that they clash with the dry signal." They were able tor recreate it with the Axe-Fx and it sounds bang on. You're totally right about "Ensemble" and "Symphonic" being terms used to describe the widening effect of a chorus. I have a bunch of old rack processors from Roland, Sony and yamaha and they all have chorus effects with similar descriptive terms!

It's a great pleasure to greet you, I always watch your videos and they have helped me a lot... I have a question if you can help me... I have a Boss Ce1, it works excellent in stereo... BUT I feel that when using it in mono, and I turn on a distortion pedal (Boss Ds2) it loses a bit of punch or presence to the distortion... let me explain better... if I'm using the Boss ds2 and I turn on the Boss Ce1, it seems that certain frequencies are cancelled, and it sounds a bit less "strong"... in clean it is not noticeable, but when I turn on an overdrive pedal before the chorus this problem happens... this only happens when I use it in Mono... when using it in Stereo it does not happen and the sound It's huge since it's easy to handle by mixing the volume of the 2 amps... Has something like this happened to you when using the chorus in mono? I have tried to look for information on the internet, but I have not found... I have a Boss ce2 that only has mono output, and unlike the ce1, with distortion it sounds even louder (boosts the mids). I will be attentive any help... greetings from Chile

The CE-1 input is pretty fussy about buffered v non buffered signals. CE1 -s wet/dry in stereo so you end up with one "up front" and one "modulated" channel too.
