My installation (Anytone 578) on a Tesla 3 is a lot easier than KOLWC's and it took me less than 30 minutes. I put a magnetic mount on the trunk, pulled the antenna cable through under the back seats and connected power to the cigarette lighter in the center console. No holes or screws anywhere. Quality of transmission/reception is excellent and no interference with/from Tesla electronics whatsoever.

@@K0LWC The sides of the center console (the part where you have the curly cord for the mic drooped over) pop off with your bare hands with a fair amount of strategic tugging to get the clips off, and then that thin strip of silver trim comes off with a handful of T20 torx screws on each side. Then you can run your power wire from the armrest 12V plug under the cup holders and out and along the edge of the gray trim and into the front cubby, then pop it all back together to cover it up. A hidden thing to worry about is that it may raise up the cup holder part the same thickness as the cable, which may make your arm rest chatter in the vertical direction. There are 2 rubber bumpers inside the armrest that might need a little extra rubber glued on top to compensate.

David Grant The Tesla still has a 12 volt battery but due to power management it is not recommended to run directly off of it. You should only run off of existing fused circuits, which includes the cigarette lighter plug in the center console. I’m personally looking at a 12v li-ion battery that charges using the cigarette lighter plug and could easily be controlled using an Arduino or Pi to properly cycle the battery instead of leaving it connected and charging all the time.

There is a mounting point for a luggage carrier made by Tesla. There is a little arrow on the roof where the crossbar goes. I don't know whether a mobile mount would fit there. The mount goes under the rubber gasket and you would not be able to tighten the set screws on a standard mount. It's not grounded in any event. There are some KZitem videos showing the install of the luggage carrier FYI. de N8JJ

Used to have a Model 3 and trunk edge mount worked okay. 12 volt outlet worked fine also. No issues. Now I am installing it in my 2022 Model S. Radio is TYT MD-9600. Rear trunk mount won't work because of glass. I'm going to try a through glass mount in rear side glass. One issue with this model is the low voltage battery is lithium. Not 12 volt, but 15.4 volts. I installed a small voltage reducer I adjusted to 13.6 volts. That works fine. Then I discovered a small tag on radio power cable that said "13.6 Volts DC +15%". So, apparently my radio can use the 15.4 volts without damage. How did you route your antenna coax?

It goes inside the trunk body panel via a rubber grommet for wires that support the taillights. Then it runs through the trunk behind the interior liner, under the back seats, and finally to the center console under the rear carpet.

Thank you for this. My Model Y arrives this coming weekend and I was wondering about how to connect it up. Right now it's connected directly to the battery in my Prius and there is another wire attached to the fuse panel which turns it on and off with the car. I have no problem connecting power to the cigarette lighter and that means I don't need the fuse panel wire. It looks like your head unit is attached to the center console with the radio underneath. How did you attach the head? Sticky tape, Velcro? Any problems opening the console? How did you run the antenna wire through the firewall to the front of the car?
@K0LWC
4 жыл бұрын
Velcro works nicely, I would recommend that route. You would not be able to close the center console with how I've configured my setup. If the radio fits, you could squeeze it down into the center console. As for the antenna, I've relocated it to the rear trunk lid as that is steel and gives a semi-adequate ground. Just run it along the back seat and under the rear floor mat from there.

I think I could pull off 15+ miles with 4 watts AM CB 11m in the right conditions, 102" whip, I've done 10 miles in poor topography before. When I get my HAM license, I'll be eager to see what I can pull off with a 2m/70cm big antenna. I admire the electric car and what it may bring us.
