Love that Sprite… more extreme than mine, but we have a group who have modified Sprites & MG Midgets with Rover K-Series and Ford Zetec engines. All running over 100bhp and some as high as 200bhp and beyond! Mine called PYG is running 200bhp.

The detailing in that car is exceptional - very nice work. I just don't fit into a Sprite, but I can certainly appreciate this project. Years ago I had a friend who drove a bugeye sprite with a Chevy v8 - I thought it was dangerous! My daily driver is a 1984 RX-7 , quite a bit bigger car and fits me perfectly. Nine years ago I installed a Skyline RB20 straight six and trans, mostly stock and a bit over 200 HP. Seems to be the perfect combination. I told a friend that stoplight drag racing is childish and immature, but if a guy pulls up next to you in a BMW - well you just do what you have to do.

Back to the true spirit of hot-rodding! Many years ago when I was in University in 1987, my girlfriend had a Toyota Corolla GT-S hatchback that cleverly hid the E86 motor that everyone now lusts for and a 5-speed (her parents bought it because she thought it was cute, and the salesman convinced them Toyota's were ultimately reliable things). I drove a 1967 Mustang fastback with a 289 V8 hooked to a three speed auto, sadly. In a straight line the Ford could easily walk away from the Toyota but it was not a run away, and in twisty roads the Toyota stomped all over the Mustang! In Edmonton Alberta, Canada there is a road from the University campus to a place on the North side of Edmonton called St. Albert where my the girlfriend lived. Groat road is a gnarly twisty little road where that little innocent looking Toyota revealed the Monster that it actually was. I easily, and I mean Easily took a 1987 Porsche 924s down that road, and remember those two were both new at the time. Back then it was a good brag at the bar that you took a Porsche in a bog stock Toyota Hatchback!! Great video, love this little bug-eye Sprite!!

Twenty years ago, I drove hard an MG Montego 2.0 EFI completely stripped of all its carpets, interior etc and under bonnet sound deadening material. Well, what to say? It's about as far removed from my own near standard Frogeye as you can get. No seatbelts (like mine), but even so, I'd feel so much happier if there was a firewall between the fuel tank and the cockpit. And I'm wondering why the rack was changed as the standard (Morris Minor) one is sublime in a Sprite. Personally, I dislike straight cut boxes unless they're in a race car, but that's just a matter of opinion. Now I've driven a _lot_ of Caterhams and the driving experience seems quite similar, at least in terms of performance and sound. It just looks to be so much fun - and a fabulous Q-car.

When it comes to the likes of classic British sports cars, I confess to being a bit of a purist and as a rule, can get quite upset with their being repowered with something inappropriate......but I would drive that wee Sprite all day, every day! Number one - it sounds like a Sprite SHOULD sound. A bit snarly, a bit whiny and no refinements - just like the original. Number two - it LOOKS as standard as a Sprite should when it moves along the road. Nothing has been done to alter the lines or hint at the fact that what is under the bonnet isn't what you'd expect. Number three - what HAS been done to it has been done sympathetically to the original car and done very well. I love how they have done the seats so that someone built along more generous lines can still get in it and enjoy it. The only mods I would make to it would be to improve the brakes (so she stops as quick as she goes) and to pad the seats a bit more so I could drive it for a couple of hours at a time without creaming my kidneys! As I am already quite deaf, the sounds of the engine and gears would not bother me at all and saves ever having to put in a stereo! Lovely little car. Many thanks for featuring it for us, Jack!
