I use the ProKennex Pro Flight, the blue one (there is also a pink one). It is great for spin, maneuverability, and feel. It’s thin so the feedback you receive from using it is, in my opinion, some of the best out there. It’s a lighter paddle as well so maneuverability is easy. Helps in those split second decisions at the net when you get the ball hit hard at you. It’s comparable to the gearbox gx6 and the new cx14 from what I have seen. All thin paddles that give good spin. I keep going back to the Pro Flight though. I’m torn right now between pro flight and cx14.

When you swing a paddle, the tip will have a higher velocity than any part of the paddle closer to you (e.g. the handle). That's because the tip will travel a farther distance than the handle in the same amount of time (imagine the tip and the handle both tracing out arcs in the air as you swing - the tip's arc is longer than the handle's). So everything else being equal, I'd expect a longer paddle to generate more spin than an identical but shorter paddle due to greater velocity when striking the ball. So it might be that one brother has adjusted to striking the ball with the Pursuit MX 6.0 at the optimum strike/sweet spot (farther away from the handle) while the other brother hasn't adjusted to hitting farther out in the more optimal spot. Another difference could have been one brother was using more wrist motion which would increase tip speed while the other didn't. This is why engineers who studied tennis racquets long ago build machines to swing racquets to ensure every swing was identical during testing. Longer paddles have more advantages than just giving you a little more reach. You can get a little more speed/spin out of the ball too (again, everything else being equal). Great video!

@@PickleballStudioGlad to see the theory made sense! A nice thing about the Pursuits is you can tell where you've been striking the ball because the face is black and there's the bullseye graphic to act as a reference point. I was watching Jessie Irvine play with her Pursuit and you could see a "circular cloud" of ball/dust marks pretty much centered around that bullseye. I have an EX 6.0 and can see a see a similar pattern. I don't know if Engage really intends for the bullseye to represent the best striking point ... but you should be able to hold up an MX and EX and compare where the "clouds" are relative to the butt of the handle. I expect the cloud would be higher up for a player who's gotten used to the MX.
@gg80108

Handle length only matters if you grip it right at the butt end. If you are a finger on the paddle player handle length makes no difference. I hold it at the butt end, Pursuit MX 6.0 !

Chris, just discovered your videos today! You are amazing! Regarding the times that you and your brother had results that were different with RPM's of 100 or more, consider a factor that I have found makes a big difference, which is the mileage on the ball. It is possible that the larger differences between you and your brother's RPM's can be contributed to if you hit a ball later on in your testing or a more worn in ball. The smoothness of the ball impacts the RPM's. I have noticed a brand new ball will have a lot less RPM's so much where I have to change up my game until the ball is "broken in" / rougher because my topspin balls will go out as a result and other differences. Spin is a big part of my game, which is why I switched from Selkirk Amp2 to Electrum Pro. I am here because I am testing out the Gearbox CX14H and comparing your CX14H spin numbers to the Electrum Pro on your chart. Your charts are great!! Btw, I am loving the Gearbox CX14H and cannot believe the spin I can generate though the surface is not as rough as the Electrum. I am finding no flaws to the Gearbox although I will probably tweak the Gearbox with a little lead tap. The electrum has been good to me, but it's not lasting (trim loosens) like I believe the Gearbox will. Cheers!

I actually am planning to test this ball theory myself at some point. I’ve been meaning to do it for a bit. The main problem we’ve had is that a brand new ball doesn’t hold the marker very well and it rubs off really badly on the paddle. So we’ve primarily used gently used balls (broken in with a few games) for our tests. But I’d like to confirm how different results really would be between slightly broken in and new. Appreciate the support and comment! 😊

Wow, that was a lot of work. Great job! I appreciate this video and the time you took to make this. Unless you can accurately apply the same exact force and paddle angle these stats are flawed. And your arm would not be tired afterward. 🙂

Might agree if he didn't swing each paddle 10 times and take the average spin rate but using that methodology makes it plenty accurate enough to draw pretty accurate general conclusions. It may not be completely scientific due to ball differences also but it's useful.

Thicker paddles do produce more spin, but to get that "more spin" you need to use a different technique than with thin paddles. With 16+mm you need to hit more through the ball than brush it to maximize spin. With that correction Diadem Warrior is one of the spinniest paddles, not even close to Diadem Icon. It's the same problem as in table tennis. Thicker and harder rubbers can produce way more spin than thin and soft, just not for everyone, as they require a different stroke technique. Also I can see no explanation of Encore producing more spin that Pursuit other than individual stroke technique.
@ChrisOlson2
2 жыл бұрын
The only problem I see with that thought (specifically the Warrior) is that it has a 3XL core with Nomex in the middle. So the more you hit through or the harder you hit, the more it’s going to rebound from the Nomex. I’ll have to see if there’s a way to try what you said though. I think you would have to find people with those specific stroke techniques. Most people probably can’t change their technique on demand to match different paddles.
@MarkNapartovich
2 жыл бұрын
@@ChrisOlson2 I'm one of those people who can :). I'm a table tennis player (used to play tennis too), so I can produce spin in many different ways. With Warrior I can produce the most spin, I believe, although it is not my paddle of choice due to its weight. Also it should be mentioned that there are actually two types of spin in pickleball. Spin on hard strokes and spin on soft game. There are paddles with some decent drive spin and almost no spin on dinks, like GX or Pro Kennex, and some that produce good spin on every stroke (Electrum Pro and E, Pursuit, CRBN, ProShot 2.0).

Thanks for taking the time and energy to do this! The physical nature of the paddle & ball combo does no service to the highly skilled player. There is a diminishing level of returns in pickleball paddle spin generation. Moreover, there is a LIMIT to the spin production irrespective of technical skill and swing speed. That being said, in terms of methodology, I think it would be more objective to get similar model paddles (similar weight/balance & shape) with different core and face materials and save the trouble of testing loads of hyped paddles. The industry is content with selling their plastic (“polypropylene”) paddles and balls for ridiculous prices, so there are no changes to the paddle/ball combo coming in the near future. In fact, a more spinny paddle/ball combo where the player can exert more control (like tennis and ping pong) will create more disparity between the skilled players (who often have tennis backgrounds) and the lesser skilled. This may lessen the level of enthusiasm for the newbie player who doesn’t have a racket sports background and in effect lower revenues for the pickleball racket. Pun intended!

I’m no pickle ball expert, but I assume the amount of spin a paddle can put on a ball would be relative to the amount of friction between the ball and the paddle. Could you take a flat object and place it on each paddle and raise one end until the object slides and then just see which paddle raised to the highest angle without sliding? I would be interested to see how that test compares to the results of your test.

I appreciate the effort you put into this, and enjoyed your video; however, the results are going to be inaccurate due to variation in each person’s swing technique: stroke, grip, swing head speed, etc…not to mention that testing outdoors can inject more variation into the tests due to changes in wind speed, wind direction, etc… For a truly accurate test of paddle spin capabilities, you’d need to test indoors, build a mechanical or robotic arm to (as precisely as possible) swing the paddle the exact same way and exact same speed every time, and with the exact optimum spin producing grip on the paddle and the grip adjusted for different types of spin, i.e. topspin, backspin, slice, etc…then use your camera as you did (which I really liked). I’ve done a lot of reliability testing, QA, etc…while in the Air Force, and also while working on military DOD Aerospace projects, propulsion, and advanced composites, throughout the 90’s and early 00’s. Variation in testing procedures must be accounted for and reduced as much as possible to achieve accurate test results. I also repair paddles for many players across the country. I just repaired a PaddleTek Tempest Wave Pro which had the entire grip/handle snapped off. Now it’s better than new. I liked that you pointed out the rapid degradation of the Franklin Johns paddle’s “Max Grit” which under USAPA rules is 30 micrometers. That paddle’s grit surface wears out so rapidly, it’s a wonder that they even sell any of them! I’ve used it before and really don’t like it. You can also measure surface roughness on each paddle with a surface roughness tester…which is how the USAPA tests their paddles which are sent in for certification testing. Surface deflection also needs to be taken into consideration, as well as core thickness, types of cores used, etc…

Appreciate your input! You are right about all of what you said. But it really just isn't feasible for me to go whip up a robot that can swing a pickleball paddle like a human can haha. While I understand everyone's thought about the robot, this isn't something that can easily be created and owned with the snap of a finger. What I wanted this video to be was some form of data based on human experience. Which is why I also used me and my brother. In the future I may even try to add more players and then average the results of everyone to give more of a real world average of people rather than a robot that isn't going to swing like a human anyways. But either way, really appreciate you watching the video and sharing your thoughts!

The Encore 6.0 result in this video was my brothers result. The spreadsheet is my results. I haven't had another one that I can retest on. That's one of the few paddles that had a big anomaly result between myself and my brother.

Great review and video! Wow, over 700 clips...that's a LOT!!! (My daughter is a professional videographer and editor so I'm familiar with what all the BTS involves!) That was really interesting. I've played with Ptek Wave, Selkirk Omni and Invikta, TMPR Ascend, and currently Icon. Out of all of these paddles, I've generated the most spin on the Icon, and gotten the most aces/near aces from the spin (top spin) on the serve. Like you said earlier, I can "feel" the ball staying on the face longer than I can on my previous paddles, using the same service motion and power. Anecdotal, for sure, so it was interesting to see where my paddles ended up. Was hoping the Icon would've ended up in the final category! LOL! Great job, I've subscribed! Look forward to your other reviews--do you have one on weight? I have more and more of my friends going heavier, putting lead tape on, etc. I finally tried it (on my Icon light weight) and didn't like the increased lag in maneuvering from forehand to backhand (or vice versa). So maybe a video on various weights and balances on resetting, power, etc. would be cool.

Thanks for watching! I’m going to probably start messing with lead tape soon as it seems to be the hot topic lately.

I'd like you to test the Player's Rogue2, Electrum Model E, and some of the TMPR paddles.

Really good stuff here guys. I appreciate all the time you put into this. Any chance that you could take a look at the electrum E series paddle? I’d love to see how their carbon fiber face performed as far as spin.

I'm trying to get my hands on one, actually. Will definitely test and add it to the spreadsheet when I do.

This is amazing work. Couple questions. 1) what kind of ball are you using? Looks like you were using a dura in the beginning and then switched to an onix pure later. 2) only one question. Amazing content and thanks for doing this! I’m an invikta user and don’t really care about the spin. 4.5 player here.

I have the new Engage Poach Infinity and the previous model Engage Poach. Their claim is that the Infinity has even more spin than the original and both were supposed to be their highest spin paddles. I'd love to hear your results for them.

I continually come back to this video to download your spreadsheet of the latest results. Thanks for all the good work you do! What is your take on spin vs. velocity?i.e.. if I impart spin with a power paddle at 1800 RPM and try to hit the base line 40’ away vs. a 1400 RPM control paddle (25% less power/velocity), would the effect be about the same? Just less speed? I’m assuming a lot of it comes down to what type of game you want to play.

Fabulous video! I wonder if you can speak to the longevity of the spinny surface for the paddles (besides what you have said about the Ben Johns (which I have and am so disappointed with how quickly it went smooth). Anyone out there have any comments about the top three in the list???
