Great video! Root is my favorite board game of all time! I hope you’re looking forward to update this video when the two new factions are released! 😁

Root can very very easily be converted into a real COIN game with a different deck of cards, maybe multiple decks based on particular sets of factions. The Priority-Event-Operation cycle of coin games would make Root 100% better, they individual faction boards and actions would haven't to change at all.

I don't know why, but I really thought this was going to be in order of overall score

I have realized the genius of doing it in complexity order. Especially as it builds an understanding for the next faction that will be talked about

I played on with the discord community in the early days and im surprised to see that you put Moles so high in power. At the time, the underground expansion was new so we didnt truly know the power level yet but we thought they were good but not the best (beaides Vagabond). Vagabond i think was a kind of cool idea where its like there is this war in the woodland and you have this lone warrior guy, but yeah as you said, it just doesnt work and experienced players will show you why he's OP. I feel like there's a cool base idea, tho, for an independent game based on the idea of what the Vaga is. Lastly i disagree with the Riverfolk about fighting them. Maybe because the players i played vs as them werent experienced but i always felt they were uninteractive and not fun to play against. My fav is the Lizards. I usually play them when i play irl since im usually the most experienced since i played online and my irl friends dont so its great since they're fun af but not that good at scoring points

When the expansion first came out people thought moles were bonkers, but as time went on they calmed down and eased up, but still thought that moles were very, very strong. It's largely due to their versatility and the absence of outplay potential against 'smol moles' strategies.

Root would be a better game if the victory condition was something besides just points. If each faction had a goal rather than raw points it would make the cats and the lizards easier to win. Domination is sorta a goal, but easily defeated. Points make snowballing too easy.

Ah very interesting! I haven't thought much about alternate win conditions besides dominance, but you're right, it would be a very interesting change to the flow of the game!

Unfortunately a game like that is Vast and due to the complexity of its factions and their win conditions it didn't do nearly as good as root

The victory points are just a universal translation of the different victory conditions. When you decompose the abstraction, you realize that each faction scores differently and that is what creates the different victory conditions. Yes, its points but how you get your points is what makes it interesting. Also, a recent dev interview talked about victory points represents the point of establishing legitimacy within the woodland. So, winning means different things to each faction as well.

I disagree, because the high asymmetry of the game make the way you score points very different already, but gives you a (theoretically) objective measure of who is ahead and behind. In reality, this takes several plays of each faction to understand what scores for each faction indicate they are in a position to win. But, fundamentally, what you say would make the game better already exists.

I don't like the Vagabond. But when i play it, i play for not win the game. I balance the players through out the game. I think the base game is perfect and the vagabond needs tô be in it. It has flaouvor, makes kingmaking better. And make root what root is, a game that is more focus on how a person win than who wins. But yes, vagabond is frustanting

Its not bad at all. He is a pain in the ass, but a vagabond who plays not for the win is perfect.

Really? Why? Did you play the VB or against him? I may be a minority here, but I do like playing him and playing against him likewise.
@2GGop

@flow3730 I played against. The idea that someone has to sacrifice themselves to barely slow down the vagabond or else the vagabond just wins is not fun game design to me.

@@2GGop In our games, this tended to force the strongest or 2nd strongest to fight the VB. So it kind of balanced the game, that the 3rd and 4th could catch up...

I don't know how this guy went through the entire video without ever pronouncing "ing." It doesn't even sound like an accent. Just a refusal to pronounce it.

I noticed that too right away. Buildins, fightin, needin, policin. I think it stands out so much as he over enunciats every other word and syllable but then that accent comes out strong. Also, Vega-bonds and eye-ren (iron)
