I can see why Necromancy is commonly viewed as morally ambigous but it can have advantages. Studying Necromancy can mean that necromantic/undead threats can be properly dealt with effectivley but I can see why it is often seen as sinister by most mages due to the likes of Mannimarco and his Worm Cult.

Such a fair point and here's why I both disagree and agree - you're walking on a fine line as it is if you're a Necromancer, and that line is both blurred and highly misunderstood to both mages and common folk alike. I feel as if a certain degree of corruption reaches Necromancers, whether or not they've decided to abide by a moral code, but I also believe that many atrocities could've been averted if Magisters themselves knew about the threat they were tackling, it's a double-edged sword which we could go on to debate about for days on end. The Black Arts themselves are also highly tempting, so you'd have to find an individual who wouldn't give in to the urges of power to study it, two factors which are a certain rarity in Tamriel; given how frequently even regular magic ends up corrupting mer/mankind. I feel as if only the Psijic Order, or any holistic order that could successfully teach their carefully chosen pupils about such an art, could be able to produce Magisters capable of developing an iron will towards corruption; and then these pupils should automatically be sent out to act as arcane advisors of sorts. Traven chose what he thought was the "lesser" evil, he compiled notes about both ideologies and reached a consensus, and yet we also both know how cunning the vast societies of Necromancers are, you might as well be slapping them on the wrist if you don't put forth such harsh sanctions as Traven did. Mannimarco was and is always inevitable, and I'd wager that if Traven hadn't banned it, the Arcane University would've fallen to numerous spies and agents of Mannimarco's, which were likely advisors to the former Arch-Mage. Now, I'm still not sure if this was indeed the lesser evil, seeing as how he could've employed the help of Necromancers that didn't turn.

@@wiibrockster Lichdom is one of the most appealing aspects of Necromancy, and whilst it does require a horrendous and detrimental amount of sacrificial care, it's one of the most effective ways of ensuring immortality at the expense of others, not to mention the wide variety of powers one gains from it as well. I might make a video about this because I do find it fascinating, Dragon Priests loved Lichdom as a whole.

Oof, I'm late. But still. Traven is a hypocrit. He bans ''Necromancy'', yet the spells to summon skeletons, ghosts, wraiths, and lichs are all still sold and used by the Guild. All of which are Necromantic in nature. Soul trapping is also a part of the Necromantic skills. Not only this, but the practice of Necromancy is legal within the Empire, Traven's blatant refusal to do business with law-abiding citizens is utter discrimination. Traven's argument against Necromancy is very poor. Discrimating one school of magic is petty. The entire argument is about manipulating the body and spirit, and why that is wrong... Yet illusion magic, or alteration magic, both of which can be far worse (especially the former) is somehow okay?

Agreed, he could've gone about sanctioning it far better than he initially did. And although I might sound a bit biased in the video, I was just trying to open up a more controversial dialogue in potential favour of Traven's actions, but your points are great!
