About 15 years ago I visited Portsmouth historic dockyard where the real Victory is located. In one of the adjacent display rooms was a very large model of the Victory which I spoke to one of the attendants about. It’s a stunning piece of modelling, in fact it’s so precise that he said that when they wanted to correct or improve anything on the real ship they actually consulted this model it’s so accurate. He said that the modeller, who I think I recall him saying was an American, even created his own model ropewalks to ensure that all the sheets and rigging lines were made in the correct pattern. I don’t know which impressed me the most, the real Victory or 5hat model.

Hi Malcom, I’ve visited the Portsmouth historical dockyards on 3 occasions, most recently 5 years ago, to see the new Mary rose museum, I’m a scale modeller, and I’m building a 1/72 HMS Victory atm , and I’m always blown away by the skills of the model builder of that time period

A nice detail about the current discovery of the original ''yellow''' hull painting: The model is accurate and `actual` here as well. Was it changed, when the old colour was found ?

That is a real piece of work, I see built for a film and took, amazingly just three months to construct. A fascinating collection of finely detailed sailing ships made mainly out of lamb/ mutton bone by French Napoleonic prisoners of war is held at the National Trust property of Arlington Court near Barnstaple, Devon. Well worth a visit and a viewing!

A great shame about the idiotic pink colour. It was stabbed at by sampling _selected_ specks of old paint, but took _no account_ of how the cheap paint used at the time changes over hundreds of years exposed to the elements and did zero research into that problem. No artist who portrayed the Victory near the time rendered it in this colour, and no written account of the time mentions this colour or anything close to it, but all speak of some form of dull yellow. - 'Ochre' / 'Sad yellow' and so on. The 'experts' got it wrong.
