This is Mona enjoy and that makes my irish-american heart just so happy to see that my mom always wanted to make those hot cross buns and she's in heaven and she never got to make it for daddy and his name was Alfred Lawrence Clark and his family goes back in Ireland as far as they have records but we were Americans of course but I remember that Resurrection Day when I call it now is Easter is such a big thing in our house and Mom celebrated it so well and to give and to give that recipe I'm going to try to make it because my mom couldn't I'm 67 here in clintonville by myself now I think I should try it but besides which I did try your Irish scones mom want to make those two and never got a chance she was some fine Baker's she made candies and Taffy's and all kinds of extraordinary things you just didn't get chance to do everything that I made the scones and I made blueberry scones I have some frozen blueberries and I made your scone recipe and it turned out really delightful I want to head and froze some and I found out if youif you have a decent oven that you can make it work but I'll still make it work you not have to fiddle with mine but it is so good I just couldn't eat all of them and it's only me here and I refuse to throw them away so I put them in the freezer and when I want us come I got a blueberry scone I can have a cup of tea with it and some Irish tea and be happy 😁 thanks again God bless you and yours shalom

I may try these this year. I tried the Irush side bread. Oh yummy. Especially toasted. Just with butter was good but adding peanut butter, raisins, a thin layer of unsweetened apple sauce then sprinkled with cinnamon - perfect dessert for breakfast! Quick, easy and scrumptious. Right now I don't know if I could find a spot on my kitchen warm enough to raise bread. It's cold and drafty. Hot cross buns might be a summer bread. It's almost Easter and I just came in from shoveling snow!

There is an actual Allspice plant. While in Jamaica we walked through the very tall bushes and I put a handful of leaves in my waist pack. Back in the US I met a chef who said you have to use Allspice (ground berries) to season her dish. I asked if I could use leaves instead. Chef said “No such thing.” I pulled some out of my waist pack and the room was filled with the aroma of Allspice. So it is a spice of it’s own. It grows in places like Jamaica. It got the name because it smells and tastes like the mixed spices. 😀

Agreed. Even here in Greece the allspice berry is a little larger than a peppercorn, and a reddish brown. We get it whole or ground. Mixed spice I make my own using ground spices of ginger, allspice, cinnamon, cloves and nutmeg, and I use in my fruit cakes or buns😊

Allspice has always been easily available in the U.S. it is also not a combination of spices as some people think. It is a spice all to itself.

It is a spice by itself, but there is also allspice used in cakes which is mainly mixed spice. It’s the latter for this recipe.

Yay! I was hoping to see a video on these buns because I wanted to make it better than my underwhelming experience with the store-bought ones! I don't have access to all the spice ingredients, so I'll have to settle on cinnamon, ginger and cloves. I hope it still turns out delicious!

A Blessed Happy Easter to you Gemma. I made these for Good Friday with modifications to accommodate the dietary needs of some family members. I used very little sugar, sultanas, flour/ water mixture to make cross prior to baking. I glazed them with pure monastic honey. They came out good, everyone had at least 2 buns, enjiying them. Some of us had them with with Kerrygold butter & monastic jams, others just the butter! I'll try the full recipe some day to share with friends. Thanks so much for sharing.

I made these today. A few things I found out when trying to follow the written recipe from your website and the video: 1) Your written recipe says to use flour on your surface when working in the raisins and when you separate into 12 pieces. You clearly say NOT to do that in your video for at least the 12 pieces. 2) For the second proofing you say an hour in the written recipe. Video you say an hour and a half to 2. 3) My store did not have instant yeast. It would be nice to have a note at the end of the recipe on how to use regular active yeast. I had to search through comments to see where you tried to help people with this. This is my first time trying one of your recipes and watching you on KZitem. I had a hard time with this one and hope if I try more I'm more successful. It's just not everyone is baking breads by scratch and clear directions are so helpful.
