Hey Paul, great video, appreciate the tips, 2 questions for you, 1- where do you purchase your 20/30 grit sand? 2- do you use the same technique for finishing walls? I am a DIYer and have several rental properties that we are renovating. thanks again

I'm an engineer for a major hotel brand... jack of all trades type of work. I'm redecorating/renovating my own townhouse right now in Minnesota.. and this style and technique is just what I have been looking for. Currently I have 30+ year popcorn ceilings throughout. I lucked out because the popcorn is not asbestos and has never been painted... so it comes off pretty easy. I need to do some minor repairs to the joints where the ceilings meet the walls, but other than that I have sound ceilings. I intend to install some faux beams eventually and the skip trowel texture is going to work perfectly with the look I am going for. Thanks for the video! I subscribed

I am doing a renovation on an investment property and had to scrape popcorn for the first time. I also had about 10 patches from hvac install and bad drywall from water leaks. In the past I’ve done spray on knockdown but I watched a couple of your vids on skip troweling and decided to try it. It came out so good I’m totally psyched. I could not find a course sand (where do i find it?) so I just used a finer grain play type sand and it still worked but definitely not as good as yours in this clip. I like your mic over commentary too, very informative. Thanks for putting these out. Can’t wait for my next property so i can skip again.

I'm in the apartment maintenance industry. We have been discussing about texturing the ceilings in the bathrooms and kitchens to help hid some of the imperfections in a patch job. I will be showing this video to the other maintenance men to see what they say about this type of texture
@grant8490

If the patch job has imperfections, you don't want to "hide" the imperfections. You want to re patch and fix them. Don't do your tenants like that. That is slum lord shit.
@errolchildress1947
3 жыл бұрын
Sorry Grant, I disagree with your comment. I understand people have differences of opinions which is OK. The reason I disagree is because during my 57 yrs of being in the construction business there have been many different types of textures applied in different ways. All of them, and I actually mean ALL of them have been mostly to hide any imperfections and the type of look is just a matter of choice that appeals to the owner at the time. Attempting to hide any imperfections DOES NOT make ANYONE a SLUM LORD!!!!!!
@grant8490
3 жыл бұрын
@@errolchildress1947 13 years of finishing drywall and I was taught to finish every single job like it's a level 5 smooth wall. Granted, the guy who trained me had ocd but I've never had complaints. Texture is for the look, not to hide a sloppy job.

Not really understanding how wanting to make a ceiling look better after previous maintenance men have done the best can can to fix what ever drywall issues they have come across be considered a Slum Lord. A Slum Lord would be not to fix any issues at all like leaking plumbing or wonky electrical or just slapping on access panels on the walls and ceiling that lead to nothing of importance. But whoever man. Everybody is entitled to their own opinion on things.
@dragonfire3282

And these imperfections I'm talking about are very minor, most of the time only us maintenance guys notice them. We call it maintenance eye. Somebody not looking for them probably wouldn't notice or care enough to make a stink out of it

Well planned videos; I started with the skip trowel over the popcorn ceiling; (I deff plan to do this in my house!) I 1st learned to paint as a summer job while in high school, and then those skills helped me pay my way through college. After college I worked with a contractor who taught me a lot of the things you cover. Here is a tip for you to share: after removing mud from a bucket, be sure to scrape the inside edges of the bucket, so that no mud dries there. This is especially helpful if you have to leave the mud in the bucket overnight. Nothing worse than pulling the mud only to find dried bits... Also, I see you doing a good technique, but I don't know if you've mentioned it? And that is to scrape the mud off the corners of your knife so that the mud doesn't squish out the sides. It's something that once learned becomes 2nd nature. I like to use a Venetian plaster type trowel for skip troweling and have several sizes. As for primers, I prefer Zinsser all the way. Good tip of tinting white paint whiter; allows much better coverage. I always get my primers tinted white, too. My college degrees were in Video production, and I ran a small company for many years. I enjoy watching your videos, and will be watching many more. Cheers!

Isn't scraping the corners needed if you're using a pan and knife, not a hawk and trowel/knife? Using the hawk there's nothing on the sides to scrape.

I am so impressed. Now to find the 20/30 sand in NE Pennsylvania. I think I'll try a masons outlet. Wish me luck. Even our mason sand here is garbage. They try to push play sand on the consumer or Quik krete all purpose sand which is all junk. If you mix it with Portland it foams. The QK is better than play sand but not by much. Friend of mine who is a mason gets all of his sand from brickyard. I love this, great job.

This is great work! I’ve never done texture before. Tried the spray can texture after fixing three stress cracks and it was not good! Didn’t match the texture at all. Tried knockdown and it was not the same. This technique gives the look of my ceiling in California. Questions, can you see the sand in the texture on ceiling? Also, I would be using a mud pan. How much sand would I mix with the joint compound?
