Developers and those working in the development fields are always forgotten in these kind of videos whether mac or pcs. Its always student artists and video editors and in pcs, gamers.

It depends what you’re developing, if you’re a web developer, you could get away with the cheap models, if you’re a game developer, look for the ones that’s recommended to gamers or video editors, if you’re not developing anything graphically intensive, and don’t want long compile times probably could go with a midrange model and don’t worry about the gpu. Unless you’re working with ML algorithms then you may want to try to get those to run on a GPU but then I also would not recommend a Mac for that tbh, also wouldn’t really recommend a Mac if you’re a game developer either, the Mac GPU’s are just too weak even if you buy a 2018 and 2019 model and you’re gonna want to run Windows for better game performance anyway.

I believe almost any development work in a modern IDE can be done on a 4-core machine with 16GB of RAM. If you're a freelance developer and you'd like to test algorithms and code functionality on-device, you may need a beefier MacBook Pro / a MacBook Pro + AWS credits or a separate Linux desktop PC w/ an Nvidia GPU. IMHO, most video creators don't account for developers since their use cases and environment vary a lot and they tend to be picky about features anyways. Just ask any IT department in a bigger software development company. However, I feel you and I'd love to see developers covered (or at least engineering students), since there're many of us who'd like to hear a second opinion on a machine or just learn about aspects we're unaware of. A simple example would be the Touchbar - I have heard mixed opinions about it among colleagues. I personally believe I'd miss the function keys. If you want to read more on buying a MacBook for development (my experience - and others' opinion, so far): - Colleagues of mine working in Web development and QA love the 15" MacBook Pros. They can install and use all browsers (Safari included), develop and test features on-device, use different resolutions and 'simulate' a smaller screen by resizing windows or dialing the resolution down without an external screen (some use that as well). Library and tech support is really good in the field. - Mobile developers (Android/iOS) - if you're an iOS developer, well - go for a MacBook with 16GB RAM or more. Most Android devs I know stay away from MacBooks simply because of their price and because it's not really necessary to have one for their work. - Robotics engineers and students favour the higher-spec 13" MacBook Pros when they're not doing on-device CUDA-accelerated development. More portable and generally less expensive. Library support is generally good. However, me and others prefer an *upgradeable* Linux workstation (or a Hackintosh laptop) to a MacBook Pro for work. - ML/AI and Computer Vision engineers tend to stay away from MacBooks if their work and basic testing is mostly done on-device, since they can't utilize Nvidia's CUDA technology, which provides huge speed improvements in many cases (neural network training etc.). However, most companies in this sector make good use of AWS and other cloud infrastructure, so I've seen development work being done on almost any MacBook with 16GB RAM, with development/testing pipelines run in the cloud.

@Donquixote Rosinante you're welcome! :) If you would like to try not to buy a MacBook but keep or emulate the MacOS feel, here're more tips: For Hackintosh alternatives (if you need MacOS or would like to check it out), check out OzTalksHW's video titled 'The $200 Macbook (Pro) Apple Can't Sell You'. If you want the MacBook's great build quality or just the look of MacOS in general, have a look at the Dell Latitude 5XXXX-7XXX line or Lenovo ThinkPad X/T/L/E series, paired with an ElementaryOS (Linux) installation (or go down the Hackintosh road, but with thorough research beforehand).

Luke SAMA(Respectful version of Sir in Japanese Language), I have been watching your videos for a while. And, I will admit you have become an expert in the world for all that is Apple. For me as well. I have enjoyed what you have to say about buying Apple products. It was you, Bryan from Tech Yes City, and that bloke from VTudio that lead me to finally gift myself with an old 2010 Mac Pro last year. I did as you did in your recent video and upgraded the RAM, CPUs, GPU, HDDs, and to SSDs. The machine is a best for 4K workflows and I am blown away that it handles editing for me so smoothly. Thank you for these awesome videos, Luke Miani. Keep the videos coming.

I use it for reading watching movies and KZitem. its my main entertainment. its a late 2013 13 inch retina MacBook Pro. what shocked me was the fact it still updates. it has been great and it does what I need. I love the keyboard, I can type and I love the feeling of pressing the keys and they're not loud when typing. Sadly Developers are forgotten, but it's understandable since it's highly depends on what are you developing. Since i'm a Web Dev/DevOps guy here are my thoughts: - If you are only developing webapps (nodejs, php, react, angular, vue) Macbook pro from 2015/2014/2013 13" with 8GB RAM is totally usable, that's what I had. Even for some light Docker/local Kubernetes clusters, totally workable. It's not fast, but does the job. - If you have a really heavy Docker setup, or you are working with it frequently you will need to get at least 16GB of ram to be able to run multiple docker compose's at the same time. That was the only point where I felt 8GB is struggling. Now I have a 15" Macbook pro from 2015 with 16 GB of ram without dedicated GPU. I'm a heavy Docker/k8s user, so it's totally workable for me. 15" macbooks without dedicated GPUs are much cheaper and web dev and Docker stuffs are not GPU heavy, so you won't need a dedicated GPU.

What about a category for audio engineers? Apple keeps on abandoning support OS and software platform wise to fast (seems like a computer sales tactic) either way the visual art section got my hopes up but i need a audio processing and mix down studio monster, a used one screen does not mater its best to run your tools on two screens separate i'd like to hear about those little hot rod mac book pros etc. please and thank you.

I have a macbook pro touch bar 13" 2016 i5/8gb/512gb and I'm considering upgrading to 2015 15" i7/16gb/512gb because 8gb of ram just isn't enough for me. Or maybe I'm moving to the new MSI Prestige 14 or 15.

How come you get the good 2015 MacBook Pro for the equivalent of £600 and we have to pay like £800. I hate exchange rates and taxes n shit
