I completely disagree with your comment about Istanbul not being related to Five's fight scene. Istanbul is all about how a place has changed over time and is no longer the same place it was in the past. That actually speaks to five's predicament, the scene starts with him talking about how the donut shop has changed from when he was a kid. And over the course of the fight scene his past is literally being destroyed around him. Which also speaks to Five's larger story, metaphorically he spent 45 years trying to return to Constantinople to only return to Istanbul.

I really love how the show handled childhood trauma and how different people will react to that trauma. Allison struggles with her daughter and uses her abilities to take away her free will, Klaus using drugs because of how mentally damaging his powers are, even Luther was interesting. Being such a daddy’s boy but then _finally_ realising how fucked up his childhood was and ultimately going off the deep end to go to a rave shows how mentally stunted he was for staying with Reginald for so long. Having superheroes with a traumatic backstory is so refreshing, and honestly it makes me appreciate Vanya even more when she snaps. Any one of them could’ve gone down the same route she did, the reason she did was purely to being so isolated and being made to feel so useless.

Umbrella academy is different because the traumatic events that caused their origins aren't just brushed off and forgotten, they have a *real* big impact on the characters that showed throughout their every action. Their personalities are made with this trauma in mind, making it so you can directly link or theorise what is being influenced by their past. about the whole "it isnt incest because it's adoption" thing, i'd like to argue that it kind of deminishes the act of adoption and makes it seem as adopted children are not an actual part of the family. (allowing a relationship between a brother and sister). IRL i do believe it would still be incest and should be considered as such. However what makes it work for Luther and Alison is that it is made clear that though they consider each other family, they never really (in the show) considered each other brother and sister, and always had a more romantic love reather than a sibling one. I'd just be weary not to make it seem like an adopted child isnt a part of a family just because they are adopted. otherwise in this specific scenario sure it works, but irl it wouldn't i believe.
@ischeele7203

Luther and Allison's thing not being treated as nasty is super gross and the only thing I didn't like about the show. My mom and uncles were adopted so seeing two siblings treated like Allison and Luther is just gross and incest, man, no matter how you slice it. I think it does cheapen non-blood family by making it a point that they're 'only' adopted
@JayTheRatMan

@@ischeele7203 exactly. Its still incest. What i meant when i said their circumstances are special is that perhaps they never considered each other truly family but it still weakens the meaning of a non blood family and remains gross. So i 100% gree with you

4 жыл бұрын
@@JayTheRatMan It's just so weird because other than Luther and Allison, the dynamic of adoptive siblings is handled so well in the show imo. The Westermarck Effect only not hitting Allison and Luther makes them that much more bad odd. My grandparents were actually good at coming up with ways of making my uncles and mom feel more special and confident as adopted kids than biological ones, to the point that not considering non blood relatives family is actually a pretty sad concept to me.
@nummurrow6360
3 жыл бұрын
There is a difference though. Haven't watched that series so I won't talk about it, but when you have incest between two family members, if they share a bad gene inherited from their parents then it'll be highly likely that their children will suffer from different illneses or just from the consequences of these bad genes, so basically, having a smaller gene pool, the children from incestous unions have higher probabilities of suffering from illneses that would normally be harder to get. That's, to my understanding, one of the reasons why incest is such a taboo, and adopted children don't really suffer from this problem. Now, there's obviously the moral conflict, in which case in my opinion both incest with biological and adopted family members are equally as bad. I'm not saying adoptive family members aren't "true" family members or that having incest with them is okay... but I do think biologically speaking, incestuous relationship between blood related family members has worse implications since it has the possibility of affecting the offsprings negatively.

Its fucking mental, its over the top and seemingly doesn't even care for what comics are known for from both narrative conventions to actual aesthetic conventions. The show on the other hand is more turned down, not in a bad way, its more cohesive and caps a lot of the weirder ideas in the comics. BIIIIIIIG yes for the whole "Wishing more adaptations were done as TV shows rather than movies" thing. Just imagine if GoT was made into a movie, rather than the eight seasons it got to flesh everything out. Definitely wouldn't have been nearly as successful, would've been a /lot/ more prone to censorship, and may have never even gotten to the juicy bits in the later parts of the entire story because it may not have ever seen any sequels (and R. R. Martin wouldn't have a new, huge incentive to finish writing the books (cough)). Even if you're not a fan, it'd be a lie to say that the GoT series has become something of a cultural phenomenon purely because of the show. The new TV series trend is one of the only reasons I have /some/ hope for the new A:TLA live-action series. Some things have way too much nuance and too many details to be chopped down to a 2-hour runtime, and Umbrella Academy may not have been as bad of a movie as the...*thing* that M. Night created out of A:TLA, but Umbrella Academy really would've lost out on so much character development and overall impact in depth and emotion. I also really think that they should maybe revisit The Watchmen as a live-action series, because the movie (while definitely not the worst thing ever imo) definitely did *not* do that graphic novel any justice. On a somewhat related note, to any fellow older nerds out there, I've heard that ElfQuest (another amazing graphic novel that's been struggling to make it to the big screen since the 80's) has been in talks to be getting a full TV series instead of just doing a movie. Which tbh, would be PERFECT for that series, as well.

11:29 I don’t have actual descriptions for Reginald, only burning hatred and frequently saying “Screw you Reggie.” Seriously, this man never should have been in charge of children. Or the world’s safety. He sucks at it. Edit: Wait, I got it: Professor X but you know he’s a jerk and no, you don’t want kids around him.

I don't consider myself a Superhero genre fan, but how you talked about the story and characters got me interested. I'm happy I gave it a chance because I agree with your analysis 100% so far. I'm gonna make some more detailed comments below so don't press read more unless you are OK with spoilers. Klaus is by far the most interesting as a character. I love how his personality is mostly a response to his upbringing. He's sarcastic, carefree, selfish, and a bit flamboyant. I appreciate how flamboyant didn't equal having an ultra-feminine personality though. People like that exist, but it's an overused stereotype at this point. All of that hides mountains of trauma, insecurity, and a desire to separate himself from his family. I loved how it was clear that they were all pretty close growing up (except Vanya), but their relationships changed as they got older and made different choices about where they took their lives. My favorite part about Klaus so far is how they are handling his love interest and LGBTQ+ status. It's relevant to his past and current character growth, but it doesn't define him. It's treated like another romantic relationship rather than this huge deal they have to shove in our faces every 5 seconds. I love the part where Diego makes a comment about "her" and Klaus calmly responds it was a he and I loved him. The scene at the VFW with their picture and the flashback of Dave's death hurt more than I expected them to. Diego accepts the correction and they move on. It was an honest mistake. Hollywood could learn so much from this show. I also like how his decision to get clean isn't a linear progression. When the withdrawal kicks in he questions his choice and often falls back into old habits. That is starting to change and I hope he can finally overcome it, but it seems like a pretty realistic struggle. Ben is great so far. I want to know more about him, including how he died. It's interesting how Klaus accepts and enjoys his presence as much as he still fears death and the souls of the dead. I guess they were exceptionally close and he finds Ben's presence comforting, even when he ignores his advice. He's a friend so it feels different. I like how each character has their own flaws. It makes them more interesting. Their conflicts aren't superficial. I love Allison. She genuinely messed up and did really bad things. I am sympathetic to her because she seems like a decent person who realized what she did wrong and honestly wants to do better, but I get why her husband divorced her and took custody of their kid. I like how you can tell that she is holding back and avoids using her powers now without being directly told. I hope she can get to a point where she feels comfortable separating using her powers to do good from her personal day to day life. I also hope she can make things right with her ex. and her kid, though that shouldn't negate the consequences of her prior actions entirely. I don't think they should get back together, but I hope they can get to shared custody someday. The father's complicated. I think he had ultimately good intentions, but was willing to do terrible things in the process. The umbrella academy were a group of superheroes. They were allowed to just be children. Klaus' conversation was so insightful. When he said "I was 13" I wanted to cry. You can tell there are definitely some conflicting emotions. I think there is a part of him that wants to love his father unconditionally, but another part that can't let go of the trauma he caused. I also loved the reaction to his father commiting suicide. He held his children to incredibly high standards, but you can't call him a hypocrite. He was sacrifice as much, if not more, than he demanded they sacrificed for the cause of saving the world. It makes me feel a something that is hard to describe. The actor for 5 is amazing. I also find the character equally interesting. For example, he obviously was desensitized to killing bad guys before the time travel incident. I think spending 45 years alone in the apocalypse made him a hard man. Combine that with desperation to escape and a burning desire to save his family, I can see why he agreed even if I find it morally repulsive. It's complicated and I can tell he has a lot of baggage. We'll see what happens.

I think 5 was closer to Vanya then Alyson was. They checked in with each other during fights and Vanya was the only one of the siblings who never gave up on 5 when he disappeared. At least in the show they are I haven’t read the comics

Finally someone who has the guts to say they prefer the show to the comics. I too feel that way im reading the comics now but i prefer how they are portrayed in the show over the comics. Also robert sheehan as klaus is probably the single greatest casting for any role ever in the history of tv and filmaking. The differences are apparent but i feel that gives the show its uniqueness and makes sure that it creates a work based on the comic that both follows it somewhat but also changes and makes it its own. The comics are fantastic. All of ways work is amazing even his doom patrol runs which i couldnt get into but i feel the show has captured my heart in such a way i dont think the comics currently have done

Everyone gets Diego’s power wrong, it’s not actually accuracy, it’s control over the trajectory. He doesn’t actually need to be able to have good aim. He can just make anything land anywhere.
@arcanewarrior863
2 ай бұрын
I think that was a bad change from the comics. In the comics Diego's power is to be able to indefinitely hold his breath underwater. The writer's took rewrote it because the power was dumb and useless, but they didn't get that that was the entire point. Diego suffers from an inferiority complex which he shows through defiance, but secretly has the desire to be good enough. Having him have a weak power, be bullied or ostracised by the other siblings like Vanya/Viktor, and have to train extra hard to peak performance to try to keep up and get his father's attention, would massively explain his issues with the rest of the family and his aggression towards them. The show makes him look like a dick in the first two episodes, mainly to use him as a red herring on who killed Reginald.

Daddy Issues?! Sign me up! For serial tho, thought the comic was fun back in the day, but the show was fucking phenomenal. Funny story, I still had the comic on my shelf when the show aired, watched it, really enjoyed it. But something in the back of my head kept telling me this was familiar, but nothing came to mind. Weeks later, I'm reorganizing my bookshelves, when I pass by the comic. Huh, I thought, that's funny. I just watched a show with the same name. What a funny coincidence. I put the comic in its new place on my shelf and moved on. It took hours for my brain to connect the pieces.
