I think the real issue with the film stems from Toms comments from a year ago. Nathan Drake as a character isn’t cool because he looks cool. The coolness comes from the charismatic nature of the character through the adventures. Playing the games, I always viewed Drake as a charismatic character. One that’s really full of humor despite violently killing hundreds of pirates. The banter he has with sully really carries his character so he doesn’t come off as just another generic hero. This film really killed the charisma. It sacrificed quality character building and interactions for mediocre action. To the point that it just feels really empty

"Who is this movie for?" That's the big question that producers should ask themselves before even starting to work on the project. in my opinion this is the big problem with these producers/studios in Hollywood when they acquire these licenses. N°1 they don't respect the source material, N°2 the film is not made for the faithful audience (the fans), they think that by including as many audiences as possible, the better, and that's where I think that's one of the biggest problems. producers are "compelled" to create stories for other audiences unfamiliar with the franchise, often resulting in weak or mediocre adaptations. We have many examples of misused licenses with great potential, such as the Hitman franchise, the tomb Raider franchise, the resident evil franchise, just to name a few. That's why I get scared when people talk about adapting the METAL GEAR franchise to the movies, because it's a very special franchise for me. note that when I talk about other "audiences", I'm talking about the mass audience in general... and yes, it's possible to make adaptations for everyone, but it has to be done intelligently so that other audiences show interest and at the same time not disrespect the base audience that are the fans.

They actually do play the iconic Uncharted theme in the film- it happens when Tom Holland gets his gun holsters on the ship, and it's supposed to be the big "Now he's Nathan Drake!" moment. So.... My thing is, I think the movie is fine. Heck, I think I kinda liked it? (Granted, I'm grading on a curve because videogame movies generally suck) But my thing was I wanted it to feel like what I've played, and it mostly did. Even if the characters felt a bit "off", and plot felt like, well... a videogame. ***Spoilers*** Nate sending Chloe in the wrong direction was actually pretty funny, and I thought it showed how much he's "learning" about a key theme of the film: No honor among thieves (which of course, is where the play on the second game's title comes from). She may have been written out of the last act, but I thought it was necessary to bring the focus back on Nate doing this final part of the adventure on his own. And also, yes, she was unlikable. I too, felt that she lacked game Chloe's charisma. What's interesting about the hotel scene not being sexual is I wonder if that stemmed from her unlikablility, or public perception of Tom Holland as young and innocent. He's shirtless aplenty, and yet there's a "boyish"ness to him that maybe Sony doesn't want viewers seeing him in a sexual way. Anyway "My fingers are armed guards"- Lol. I can agree that sneaking into the red car can be seen as a plothole. But I think the filmmakers calculated that risk because revealing them in the trunk is supposed to be the joke surprise. The point is, the movie isn't taking itself too seriously. That's why when the bad guys are killing each other, you can't get too wrapped up in the legal logistics, lol.

It just seems like right now if your movie doesn't have Mark Wahlberg, Tom Holland, Ryan Reynolds, the rock, Kevin Hart, or Chris Pratt attached to it it won't get made. I've read elsewhere that movies have become even less risk averse In the last decade because of the rise of streaming. With nobody buying physical media anymore, movies have less of a chance to make up their production costs, so movie studios only go with tried and true profit turning formulas regardless of the critical response. When you start realizing that movie studios don't care about making good films, only profitable ones, and if a profitable movie happens to be good, that's the cherry on top, you'll stop being disappointed.

You just write a new story based on what we know about the characters. Come on the old Indiana Jones movies had action, romance, puzzles, and were condensed to a movie length. It is possible and doable. The fact that something is hard does not mean people should always chose the easy way. Example if in my line of work I get a complex problem to deal with I cannot cut corners, I cannot say I will not do it. I need to work hard to deliver within the time I have. This movie production was announced back in 2008 and it went through production hell but they had more than enough time to polish a 2 hours story.

@0GIE

Okay, before I say anything, I've only played the first Uncharted and half of the second one. I decided to pick it back up after almost a year to really get me ready for this film. So, my opinion may not matter compared to the people who've been fans of the franchise and have loved these characters for years. But, I think I have a pretty good understanding of the personalities of Nathan, Sully and Chloe. And sadly, I didn't see that funny spark in any of them. Sure, there were moments that I chuckled at, but nothing that had me thinking about 30 minutes later and laughing at, unlike in the games. I was also able to notice that the director clearly hadn't played the games and it could show by how the characters were portrayed in the movie. I thought since Tom played the games, he might put some input into the characters and script, bounce some ideas to the director or improvise, but there was nothing of the sort. And you know it's bad when my dad, a person who says almost every movie is good, slept through the entire damn movie. He hasn't even played the games, but has seen some of the dialogue between the characters of the times he's walked in on me playing. He genuinely thought that he would get the same experience from this movie, but it didn't hold up. And the small minor thing that I want to say that could be considered spoilers, Rudy Pankow's time on screen was complete horse shit. He did well as JJ Maybank from Outer Banks, but he doesn't match Sam in any way, shape or form. I've said to my friends that I would've rather had a sander placed against my eyes and ears than hear or see him acting. He just didn't match the guy I've seen in Uncharted 4 and it sucks because he is a good actor. Overall, as Luke said, it is a 6/10. I would give it a 7, but that's me being generous. It wasn't great or good or amazing. It was eh and that's it. Tom did okay, Mark should've developed to become that surrogate father figure to Nate, and Chloe left me wanting to reach through the screen and strangle her.

I saw the movie last night. I had watched a few spoiler free-ish reviews, so I knew the consensus was mixed going in. I played through all 4 games for the first time when the PS store released them for free during the pandemic. I was…..pleasantly surprised 😮. I thought that Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg did a pretty good job in their respective roles. I’m not a huge fan of either, but they both grew on me as characters as the film progressed. This film is a quasi-prequel, so some of the changes make sense. After seeing the mid-credits scene, I’m actually interested in seeing where the story goes. My biggest COMPLEMENT: Tom Holland NAILED the physicality and charm of Nathan Drake. I’m not sure an older actor could have pulled off those crazy stunts. Biggest GRIPE: The story was a little choppy in places, like a few extra scenes would have helped….My overall thoughts:Enjoyable film that actually had game like moments throughout…Better than I expected…

The subplot is you can’t trust anyone in the treasure hunting business that is why you see moncado betray his father and then braddock betray moncado and Chloe betray nate, but Nate and sully don’t betray each other and there is a strong bond forged. If you look in the uncharted game Chloe betrays Nate in the game too. So she’s portrayed like that in the movie. And braddock is a little undeveloped character but shows what a psychopath she is the lengths she goes to get the treasure. Chloe also comes and goes in the movie the movie is about Nate the main character after all. Getting onto the plane wasn’t an important point but getting off it was. Sully did kinda leave Nate at the auction in the movie, but that really was the only scene he left Nate behind. Otherwise I felt his arch was good. But very different from the Sully we know. In the game, Sully got robbed by some random kid and his girlfriend wants to kill the kid, but what does Sully do? He risks his life to save Nate from Marlow’s men. That’s my only issue with the movie; Sully has morals and wouldn’t leave a kid behind; even if that kid was a brat; because I like to believe Sully saw through Nate’s tough guy attitude.

Just a correction: The iconic theme is used twice during the movie. The first time is when we see Nolan North which made me initially think they were leaving the theme to the game, but then its played for the second time when Nate puts on the iconic bandoleer for the first time and he shoots someone. What was weird to me though was that they never decided what the music would be used for, but instead placed it at two entirely different moments for completely different purposes. It just kinda bums me out tho cuz they didn’t remotely try to implement the music for any specific purpose.

My biggest thing about this film is they could've had a winner, cast Nathan Fillion as the lead, (the short film he did was perfection!), and the rest of the cast they used for that short film, in the live action film, give us a Nathan Drake of maturity, (in age, lol), same with Sully, etc. They were casted wayyyy to young, and mashed multiple games into one film, when each game has an amazing story, and could've been a series of 4 film's in there own right, buttttt, we have this mediocre film, and though I've played and loveee these game's, all of them, I won't be seeing the film, for the simple fact that they really dropped the ball on not only the casting, (Why is Chloe in the film, she wasn't in the franchise till the halfway point, and where is Elena?), but even the look of the film, it's...nothing special, I mean, each Uncharted game brings us beautiful, breathtaking moments of HOLY SHIZ, (especially in 4, it's spectacular!), and the film just seems...meh, average. Maybe they can reboot it year's from now and do it as 5 seasons of a show, each season is a 1 of the game's, including lost Legacy, and give us what we really want, an amazing adventure in the world of Nathan Drake and friend's. 💯😊😎

It's hard to explain exactly how, but I think a few others understand what I'm getting at. The movie isn't anything special, but I genuinely did enjoy the fight scenes(half the time I was almost thinking 'just use your web shooters' then remembering what movie this is) and a lot of the camera work. Specifically with the [Spoilers] Plane Scene. Me and my buddy got a good laugh realizing the red car's fate in every scene we saw it in since it was shown for a sec in the beginning. But going back to the camera angles and shots, I personally really like the way Tom was falling out of the plane. The weight of the objects, wind rippling, somethin about it was a highlight to me. I dunno, it's 2am and I can't think straight but hopefully my thoughts made some sense.

To be honest I really enjoyed the movie not having the games to consideration being it’s own thing its really enjoyable but really nothing compare to the games obviusly

I think that's the thing. I don't have a PlayStation, haven't played the games, probably never will since Sony doesn't seem willing to port them. It's unrealistic to believe that most of the movie audience would have, so source material isn't held to the standard that relatively small percentage of the audience would care about.

It’s really not that bad of a movie lol…y’all just compare to the games too much instead of accepting it as an adaptation/reboot. Quit crying about it you nerds

Movie was unnecessary. The game is cinematic enough like a interactive movie at least on easy mode.

That's the thing, right there. If I want to watch a movie, I'll do that. If I want to play a game, I'll do that. I don't expect either to translate across media and don't care if they do. Do games tell stories? Sometimes. Do they do it well? Sometimes, but usually not given they typically consist of less than linear storytelling. Movies usually have trouble when they're based on books where everything is spelled out in great detail, so why would we expect games, in which so much relies on the player filling in gaps and creating the narrative for themselves? Few games have compelling enough stories to make a good film. RDR2 is one of the few games I've played that might make a great cinematic film, but for as meaningful as that main story is, it's not the essence of that game. I'd rather just play the game and watch a better Western movie. Likewise, I'd rather watch an Indiana Jones movie than another movie based on a game that was based on an Indiana Jones movie.

It really wasn't horrible. It was a solid 6 movie. Fanboys are the worse.

I'm going to watch this, but I enjoyed the film-- I hope that I can understand your perspective by the end of this video. I will say that they didn't get Sully right at all, but I thought that Tom Holland did a great job!

It's almost as if they were ashamed that it was a video game film so they just put the video game stuff in the post credit scenes just to try to please the fans of the games

For the first time since watching your vids I actually diss agree with you. It’s just it’s own thing for a new audience with a little influence from the game. I think In time once the viewers get comfortable with this movie they will then make more faithful content in the sequel. Plus this is also a origin, not a adaptation of the games.

But why would they be motivated to get it right in a sequel if this is successful? It will just signal to them that they are on the right track, no?

If the point is that it's its own thing with a new audience and little influence from the game . . . then why call it Uncharted?

You cant call a movie the same name as a huge franchise like uncharted, use all that cred to promote the film, and then claim that it is its own thing.
@Egurius3

@@shawnjames3242 You absolutely can make an adaptation that has it's own feeling while using elements from the source material. Christopher Nolan's Batman films are fairly different from the comic books in tone, but they're still considered good films.

Yep exactly this was the origin of Nate and Sully not really a remake. It’s the Casino Royal of the Bond series.

At some point during the movie I was like ... wait where is Banderas? Ohhh yeah! She cut his throat? Why would you cast such an actor and just got rid of him in the middle of the movie. Who made those choices? But also it was such an like pointless death I easily forgot it :D
