We have these cherry plums in Australia (Victoria) growing on many nature strips and in parks. No one eats them, but I always eat them. Nice and sour.

Your cherry plums are beautiful! I saved the seed from a few cherry plum trees that grow everywhere in the little town of Garberville, California. They were luscious! I started some trees and planted them in my backyard garden in upstate New York. They are now 6-7 years old and I hope to get a decent crop this year. I got two plums last year 😆. They tasted great! I guess you have to start somewhere. I agree, they are under appreciated, thank you for sharing this.

Good choice. The trees do not need any care, fruit much more reliably than other plums and taste good

Again, just like you said the cherry plums came loaded with fruit as usual this year. :) I had literally no plums whatsoever this year, but the cherry plum was more loaded with fruit than ever! Mine are the yellow colour and they taste very good, very good balance of sourness and high sweetness and strong plum flavour and they are also unusually freestone. You could almost think these were mirabelles! :) It is sad how these are almost not even talked about or grown otherwise, they could literally clone and sell this "variety" in my garden for example. The fact that they get loaded with fruit EVERY single year is just insanely good! Regular plums often skip every other year of fruiting. :/

There was a cherry plum on my neighbor's side of the fence. I picked some from my side for years but a new neighbor cut it down about 30 years ago. Then it grew back on my side of the fence line. It's yellow pink and this year is loaded like yours. Clusters you can pick handfuls at a time. Flavor is great too.

Came back to this video yet again, I let another dead plum tree cherry plum rootstock grow up and this year it was loaded with flowers and now small fruit buds just like my other cherry plum tree! Every year I am now guaranteed a huge plum harvest no matter what and how the other fruit trees are doing, even the cherry plums with not too much flavour makes excellent plum jam and wines. Everyone should grow cherry plum trees on their property for reliable fruit!! I've also gotten the ornamental black cherry plum tree variety looking forward to try those fruits and use them for jams also!

As kid I was all over our hills covered in forest around our town; when hungry didn't wanna take the risk and go home to have launch with family as I was afraid I'd be held home to do homeworks and chores. Nice video and good point on the cherry plums bearing EVERY single year and reliably! After seeing how many of my plum trees tend to skip one year of fruiting the cherry plums come very handy for making jam and other things in the years there aren't many other plums. Cherry plums indeed seem to set a lot of fruit each year reliably, for jam I would say they have about 80-90% as good flavour as jam made from real plums which is still very good. Funnily enough the jam from cherry plums have taste similar to both the unique tastes of plums and cherries each respectively, but again not as good but still beats the jam sold in grocery stores. Instead of cutting down old cherry plum rootstocks I am saving them to keep having fruit reliably in those years other plums/fruit trees fail to set them. This year I am also planting blood cherry plums both for their attractive foliage and flowers and to have even more cherry plums! Near me there are also other old remnants/hedges of cherry plums. I've found that some dark/purple cherry plums can also taste worse than the yellow ones and the fruits from individual "trees"/hedges can vary in size, flavour and consistency a lot. Some are even freestone while others are clingstone. There are also name varieties of cherry plums but I think these are rather hybrids/backcrosses with plum and cherry plum and perhaps they might suffer from the same less reliable/unreliable cropping that normal plums do? Edit: BTW can't you make a video on Damson plums? Where I live in Sweden old Damson trees/hedges are a very common sight on the countryside. These also flower and crop much more reliably than the named plum varieties just like cherry plums(damson plum hedges are always a splendid sight in spring). Some are very harsh and sour, kind of "peppery" in taste while others are very sweet and rich in flavour. Some are even equal or superior to some name varieties of plum and are freestone and more like prune plums or what I think you call "blue plums". Surely there must be a lot of old Damson plum hedges where you live too with different characteristics?
@allthefruit
2 жыл бұрын
Yes, i made lots of videos on feral plums in my area. Some of them you might call damson plums but as you said they all have different characteristics. There is a variety used a lot as rootstock in my area with round fruits which we consider could be a damson plum

So many plums in Romania too! It is believed the European plum (also called prune) originated on the foothills of the Carpathian mountains of Romania. Alternately, the Asian plums originated in China believed to be in the Yellow River Valley along with peaches. But European plums originate in Eastern Europe- Balkan & Dacia are the homeland! Beautiful history. It is so nice to see rose bushes planted near plum trees. Very regal.

Very informative video thanks. Lots of cherry plums here in the hedgerows in Suffolk (England), often the dark fruited ones are called bullaces. The trees are easily mistaken for blackthorn, similar shape, habitat, bark and blossom. In my my opinion, they are best and delicious soaked in alcohol with honey, then strain and drink the liquid after about 3-4 months!

We have nine of these trees in our historic farm. I'm 99% sure they were all rootstock for cultivar plums. Original cultivars all got outcompeted like you mentioned. Plan to re-graft cultivars back onto ours this upcoming spring, but we sure do love these little gems as well - just searching for methods of pickling / fermenting / preserves so we can use more of them year over year than we usually do. We also find that the red leaf cerisifera always produce prolifically. But our yellow varieties are a little hit and miss, they're the first to flower - we got snow a month after they were in bloom this year!! Got almost zero yellow plums, very few cultivar plums, almost no apples, haven't seen a single pear set. 10,000,000 cherry plums.
@allthefruit
2 жыл бұрын
😂 you are so right. Just graft some cultivars on them but also keep some cherry plum branches. Cultivars might not grow too well, you have to experiment a bit. We used to make brandy, nectar, jam, kompott and dry them after removing the seed. See what tastes best for you
@jacobski7216
2 жыл бұрын
Why not just keep them or some of them as they are and planting new plum trees elsewhere? When making jam or wine just put them in whole, the stones/pits can be removed later when they have been separated from the boiling when making jam or fermentation in wine, for jam I use a hollow spoon like one for deep frying. Or just run them a couple of moments in a food processor or blender before fermenting then strain off the pits once the fermentation is complete if you find that the stone has a tendency to cling. :) The fact that cherry plums are so reliably at cropping makes the rootstock worth saving when removing old/dead plum trees IMO. Well at least where I live the early blooming of cherry plums is no problem and I live in south Sweden.
