Hard to say what I want to say without spoilers, but Homura provides hints at her dynamics with the other girls building up to this episode. She is upset when Mami dies and later admits to Madoka that she regrets not being able to save her (but also, isn't terribly surprised by it). She likes or at least trusts Kyoko, because the redhead's very straightforward and easy to deal with. With Sayaka, she's a lot more guarded because of her stubborn personality. After a few attempts at helping her, she gets tired of dealing with Sayaka and writes her off. So, it's not that she ONLY cares about Madoka, but for reasons that will soon become apparent, she's the one she cares about, and feels she understands the most.

To pronounce Walpurgisnacht, it helps to know the history. It's a german word (which means nacht is pronoucned "noct") and it refers to Saint Walpurga's Eve, or "Walpurgis Night". The festival "Walpurgis Night" is a key event in Goethe's telling of The Tragedy of Faust (by this point you may have noticed that Kyubey's contract is quite literally a Faustian bargain in the classical sense). What's funny is that in japanese, the characters don't literally say Walpurgisnacht. They say "Walpurgis no Yoru" (literally Night of Walpurgis in Japanese), implying that any name for the festival is also a canon-appropriate name for the Witch herself, not just the literal word Walpurgisnacht.

There are a lot of explicit Faust/Goethe references, and not just in the general concept/structure. I believe the runes in Episode 2 quote the play, and the title of Episode 6 ("No Way I'll Ever Regret It") is a paraphrase of a line from Faust, plus the image of the black-and-white mask over the end credits. A certain character's Witch form is named after Faust's main female character. And so on. Urobuchi loves his literary references and he sure crammed a lot into Madoka.

To add more German context, the night of Walpurgis in not only a reference to Goethe's Faust, it's also an event in ancient folklore. There's a literal "Hexenberg"= "witches mountain" in Germany. It's said that on the night of Walpurgis (30th april to 1st may) all the witches fly on their brooms and gather on the witches mountain, holding a big, all-night long (thru Christian middle age eyes) unholy festival. Afterwards they disperse again into their respective corners. So it's fitting that.... SPOILER!!! Walpurgisnacht is an amalgation of collective witch consciousnesses. Really good name pick by the writers.

Unless a magical girl dies she will eventually become a witch. It's possible to die a happy magical girl: Your wish goes just as you want it to, you fight what you regard as evil beings (witches), you make friends with other magical girls and you don't run into many (or maybe any) like Kyouko that want to fight for territory (maybe you are in a wilderness area or you are just a very strong Magical Girl that few want to mess with). Heck, if you never discover about the soul gem being outside your body (or you do and you are a girl who it doesn't freak out because does it make any difference when you still FEEL like you are inside your body?) perhaps you even have a male lover or husband and pop out a lil "Magical Brat". This goes on for a few years, maybe even a little over a decade. Then , one day, you take on a witch, you get really unlucky and your "number is called". But even then, it's fast and painless and you die with a smile on your lips thinking of your loved ones and never discovering the horrifying truth of who the witches were. But here's the thing: That's not Kyubey's preferred outcome. For reasons soon to be explicated the Incubators want ALL Magical Girls to eventually turn to witches and they SOMETIMES actively work to mess around with a given girl to make that happen. And it does seem if not most, at least a significant proportion of girls (I think it's most: like 80 or 90 percent) do turn into the witches.

Spoiler alert Kyubey doesn't understand emotions but can predict the actions of these girls via pure collected data The reason homura couldn't fix things by going back in time is because the layout made by kyubey leaves for little chance of good ending path. The series is awesome because madoka the most manipulated character is the one that managed to be freed from kyubey chess board. Then The movie is a greate finishing touch cuz kyubey became a chess piece because homu abandoned logic and persued emotions (already happening after madoka became law of cycle)

I know this is a super late comment lol but I didn't see it that way at all. The only sacrifice that I think she really made was healing Kyosuke even after she'd seen how dangerous becoming a magical girl could be. She didn't sacrifice a relationship; she was disgusted with her 'zombie' body which is why she didn't pursue Kyosuke. She didn't sacrifice grief seeds; she gave them away because she didn't want to be what she believed to be a 'selfish' magical girl who would fight over them at the expense of other people. She fell into despair because she was betrayed by her ideals... to steal a quote from FSN lol. She wanted to be a hero but was then faced with the reality of her own dark and 'selfish' thoughts (eg. regretting saving Hitomi, blaming Madoka for not becoming a magical girl, etc.) and lost all sense of self worth.

@@daviddarq6732Calling it a Madoka rip off is doing a disservice to both series. Yuki Yuna's core message is almost completely different to Madoka's, and the difference in tone for its endings (I say endings because there are multiple seasons) are indicative of that. Even if they are often grouped into the same "magical girls with a dark twist" subgenre, Yuki Yuna really doesn't deserve the comparison, especially when they both came out around the same era and Yuki Yuna wasn't intentionally made as a derivative.

@@daviddarq6732 you guys literally say that to almost every deconstructive dark magical girl shows that doesn't follow the traditional magical girl formula. Yes! Madoka Magica has indeed pioneered this version of magical girl shows. The deconstructive ones showing a dark, cruel, and twisted side of what it's like to be Magical Girls. And it indeed has inspired lots and lots of other magical girl shows that follows it. They are now straying away from the traditional formula to try creating something new unique with the Mahou Shoujo genre like what Madoka Magica did. Bringing us something new to the table. But saying that all deconstructive dark magical girl shows are all just rip-offs of Madoka Magica is just insanely childish and "gatekeepy". Yes it started and pioneered it but it doesn't mean others shouldn't be inspired to try their own version or twist to this new marketable trend within the magical girl genre. And just because it's the series that started this trend doesn't mean anything that follows this kind of dark formula are all automatically just "rip-offs" or just trying to copy Madoka Magica. Originally, Magical Girl shows used to be just slice of life animes like Ojamajo Doremi and Sally The Witch for example. Well, not until Sailor Moon came into the picture and pioneered the nost notorious trend of the Mahou Shoujo Genre introducing the idea of magical girls being more like power rangers. Being warriors and heroes fighting bad guys and monsters but this time as girls wearing pretty dresses and outfits. After Sailor Moon, almost all magical girl shows that follows all did this new formula and trend within the Mahou Shoujo Genre of making magical girls being heroes and warriors fighting the forces of evil. After Sailor Moon, we now have magical girl shows like Tokyo Mew Mew, PreCure Franchise, Cardcaptor Sakura, etc. But do we call these animes A "Sailor Moon rip-off" No! Because we all know animes always follows the wave of new trends but they still make their own plot and story... Following the waves of the formula that's newly marketable across different genres is normal because audience do get bored with having the same thing going on. For example, isekai animes used to be very just innocent adventurous and interesting animes. But now due to the very rising trend of adding ecchi to it... almost every isekai animes are now associated with ecchi... it's just like that. Now that the power ranger, fight the evil forces Era of the Magical Girl Genre (pioneered by Sailor Moon) is already starting to get old. It's already starting to wear out and get very predictable. People are getting bored of it. HENCE the crisis of the magical girl genre already starting to get less relevant amongst all the other genres in anime. So normally, people in productions have started to become innovative and tried out new stuff to make this genre interesting again. Because they knew in their hearts it still has very great potential as long as they try something new and interesting with it. Chasing the new trends and what pleases most anime audiences now. And so they came up with this new formula for magical girl shows. That being a dark and deconstructive one. Straying away from the traditional ways of the magical girl shows .. which is why we are introduced to Madoka Magica. And then we are starting to see that all the magical girl animes that follows have now tried the same trend and formula with the genre. Showing a dark, mature, twisted, and cruel side of magical girls. Madoka Magica is basically just like Sailor Moon. Both of them are literally just magical girl shows that pioneered and introduced a new trend and formula to the Mahou Shoujo Genre. Once again bringing something to the table. Instead of the plain old fried chicken, Sailor Moon and Madoka Magica made something new both in their respective times. They spiced things up which also inspires the others to also try their own style and their own way of spicing up their chicken to please the people tasting it. Inspiring numerous magical girl animes that follows them from also trying their own unique twist to this new trend of the genre is not copying or plagiarism. It has always been the way of art. Every art in this world all took inspiration out of something. Being inspired of off something is not copying. This means that not all dark magical girl shows after Madoka Magica are just rip-offs of it. Or are just copying it. All of these Magical Girl shows have their own thing going on with them. Sailor Moon and Madoka Magica were just able to introduce them a new idea of what to do with the genre. they basically just encouraged them to make their own twist to it.

@@daviddarq6732 This brings us to the original topic, Yuuki Yuuna is not a rip-off of Madoka Magica... Yuuki Yuuna is a Hero literally has it's own thing. Yes! It's also a pretty deconstructive and dark magical girl show like Madoka Magica. But that's about it. That's the only thing that the two shows have in common. It's a show showing the a dark and cruel side to being a magical girl. Story-wise and plot-wise they are pretty different. They have their own thing going on. The character types might be similar to that of the Holy Quintet girls but story-wise and plot-wise is very different. Even relationship/story sequence-wise, they are very much different from each other. In Madoka Magica official timeline, the girls don't even fight alongside each other, they don't even get along with each other. One dies before the other turns into a magical girl. In YuYuYu, the girls all get along together, are friends and have always fought alongside together. Also they didn't die but they have their own dark and cruel twist with the Magical Girl genre. If in Madoka Magica, the dark and cruel twist is having teenage girls being tempted to sign a contract only to get taken advantage off and die or turn into monsters to get hunted by future deceived teenage girls. The dark and cruel twist in Yuuki Yuuna Wa Yuusha De Aru, is teenage girls literally being put in a situation where they will have to endlessly fight monsters that keeps regenerating back to normal no matters how many girls it will take just to prevent it from harming what's only left of mankind/earth, and they are not allowed to die, they technically can't die, and any moment they try to kill themselves someone's going to stop them, they basically have to fight their whole lives until their bodies start to decay and can no longer manage and withstand it, they just have to suffer and endure every pain and damage their bodies will get with all the fighting and get tossed out and replaced once their bodies have taken too much damage and are no longer capable of doing the battling any more. Literally tossed out to the side as an immortal disabled fr3āk who feels nothing but numbness. With Madoka Magica, the girls can die if they are killed both as a magical girl or as a witch but with YuYuYu. Once they become Magical girls, they become immortals, they can't die. They are not allowed to. So they have to suffer, endure, and live through everything, the pain doesn't end for them. They literally sacrificed their own bodies to the gods and gave it as a mere offering. They have to offer one of their organs, senses, and physical abilities whenever they have to borrow the Shinju's powers (using Mankai)... With Yuuki Yuuna is a Hero, their cruel and dark twist to the whole magical girl genre is about literally having their bodies as mere offer or sacrifice to the gods, and they couldn't do anything about it. The more they have to endlessly fight vertex, the more they have to borrow Shinju's powers, the more they also offer different parts and functions of their bodies as payment. It's basically like they are tearing their bodies limb from limb just to pay it to the god for letting them borrow his power. They lost their ability to walk, to see, to hear, to taste... the more they use or borrow the God's power, they lost organs as well. It's like having everything that makes them normal functioning humans be removed from them one by one, and for worse, they have to live through all of it and just endure it because they are not allowed to die. There's no escape for them. They also basically had a happy ending unlike Madoka Magica original series and timeline. Madoka Magica's was more of a bittersweet ending. These things in itself, are already enough to shoe just how YuYuYu has their own thing going own. They did NOT copy Madoka Magica. These things ain't even the only ones that makes it so different from Madoka Magica. There's a lot more. Plot and story-wise is very different as well... It's really silly how you call almost any Dark deconstructive magical girl anime as a rip-off of Madoka. It's like you're gatekeeping the dark deconstructive magical girl show formula as only for Madoka Magica. I honestly prefer Madoka Magica than YuYuYu.. Puella Magi Madoka Magica is just TOP TIER of a story and show for me... However, I highly disagree with you on this. discrediting Yuuki Yuuna is a Hero for it's own beauty and just calling it a copy or rip-off of Madoka is just wrong... The two shows are very different from each other.. The two have their own thing going on with them. They have their own unique twist to the Mahou Shoujo Genre. From the opening to the ending of the story... Madoka Magica and YuYuYu are just so different from each other. From sequencing to plot-wise and story-wise... I think the dark magical girl anime that best fits with the description of a "Madoka Magica rip off" is "Magical Girl Site" literally that show and comic is hands down really trying it's best to mimic Madoka Magica as a show. Desperately trying to make it more gorey and dark. It literally looks like an Edgy fanfic parody of Madoka Magica. Even the comic/manga, have the main protagonist (Aya) has her own Madoka moment. Where she goes and travels to different timelines to save all the magical girls before becoming magical girls. And creating different clones of herself in the very process. The plot is a literal rip off of madoka. With the witch being the Site Admins in this show... and the Site Admins are also just previous magical girls who used up all their lifespan, died, and become site admins. Also having a deuteragonist that can stop time. The reason behind the existence of magical girls in this series is also about taking advantage of the fact that the people who undergo most emotion and unfortunate experiences are mostly teenage girls hence taking advantage of them and making them Magical girls cuz the more they use magic the more they produce energy and contribute to the awakening of something. Much like how Kyubey is turning normal teen girls into Magical Girls because they are the ones going through the most emotion when transitioning to adulthood and them turning into witches produces energy that will contribute to entropy or some stuff like that... It's literally so similar to each other. not to mention the reason why this kind of system exists is very similar to Madoka. It's all for the better of the universe or the planet or some stuff like that. In Madoka Magica, there's a day they fear of and a day they have to be prepared for awaits, that being the Walpurgisnacht. In Magical Girl Site, that would be "The Tempest" they are literally not even subtle about following the exact sequence and formula madoka magica has. Magical Girl Site is the literal definition of a Madoka Magica rip-off, Yuuki Yuuna Wa Yuusha De Aru though? NAHHH... Yuuki Yuuna and Madoka are very different from each other plot and story-wise. They only thing they have in common is just the fact that they are both dark magical girl shows. But they put their own unique twist and style to the genre. If you want to point fingers at magical girl animes for being a "Madoka Magica rip-off" atleast point your finger to the right one. Cuz Yuuki Yuuna is a Hero surely isn't one. Flip Flappers too. Both being a deconstructive and dark magical girl shows with their own twist to the genre.

The conversation between two men on the train is truly awful. According to a magazine interview, their dialogues were actually overheard by men on a crowded train that Mr. Urobuchi was riding.

Miki Sayaka would let the world burn if it meant eradicating Fresh N'Fit and the Tate brothers off this world. Queen!

Can't believe Sayaka had to sit and listen to Andrew Tate and Ben Shapiro on the buss.
