I love my handhelds as well, but I agree, and let us not forget for a mobile device that's online focused It would need mobile data, and in 2010 public 4G LTE service was not even a year old, and a good chunk of the US still had trouble getting decent 2G, and 3G cell signals on all carriers. Same still holds true in 2020 for many parts of the US on getting stable 3G, and 4G LTE service. I can drive though my state of S. Carolina on my way to Charleston SC, and James Island SC on the cost to see family which is about a 4 hour ish drive for me being in western SC near the GA border, and for miles, and miles no matter who your carrier is you get ZERO cell signal, even AM/FM radio goes screwball at times.

I think another reason why the Jungle was cancelled has to do with online gaming market itself. the market is largely based on the "Flavor of The Month" model. An MMO or some multiplayer shooter will come out, its going to be everywhere for a few months or if its really a big hit, maybe a few years then something else comes around and things start all over again. this console would constantly put everyone at Panasonic on the edge of their seat wondering if the next "Flavor" will even run on the Jungle, and the thing is, if it doesn't, can they even release a new model without alienating there audience. this console was disaster waiting to happen. A;so, Both models need to have there Rom's dumped, make sure no matter what happens to the hardware, the software is safe.

@j.macjordan9779

~ 3:40 - "This was the first console attempt by Panasonic since the 3DO" The 3DO was a console attempt by The 3DO Company and it was designed by RJ Mical & Dave Needle (1/2 the Amiga design team) of the soon-to-be subsidiary New Technologies Group. The 3DO Company sold licenses of the 3DO's design specifications to several different companies to manufacture. Panasonic was the first to buy the 3DO license and manufacture a 3DO console. I wouldn't call it much of an attempt by Panasonic to create a console though, especially since both Sony and Sega were initial targets. But, in addition to Panasonic, the license to manufacture the 3DO was successfully sold to AT&T, Goldstar, Samsung, Sanyo, & Toshiba-Goldstar (or LG) and Sanyo brought models to market, while AT&T manufactured 3DO units, but never brought theirs to market. Panasonic seemed to want to be in the video game market, going even so far as to buying exclusive rights to The 3DO Company's M2 Accelerator, but with the PS1 & Saturn on the market, & the 3DO nose diving from horrible marketing & horrible coordination, it was never put into production. It's ironic though that Panasonic was developing a handheld right around when RJ Mical (who would go on to be a developer working for Sony at that same time) was working on the PS Vita - a handheld, which by all appearances, is leaps and bounds beyond Panasonic's Jungle (assuming they abandoned the failed licensing model & did indeed design it in-home...?). I still have the original Vita; it's still great even today!

I started getting into MMOs, mainly WoW, in 2010 after I bought my first MacBook Pro (which coincided with Valve bringing Steam to what was then called Mac OS X) *and* by the time they announced the Panasonic Jungle or at least kicked off its marketing, I had acquired a Panasonic 3DO a couple of months before so...as I was focusing on gaming news at the time, part of me was certainly very curious on how the Panasonic Jungle would've been like and when it turned out they were cancelling, a part of me felt kinda sad that the console wasn't going to happen. This video serves as a super nice epilogue to all that, even if the retail-style Jungle model isn't functioning anymore (you can check out a forum post someone made of that unit with very minimal peaks at the UI, though). Heck, I'm weirdly more nostalgic for the early-2010's (especially 2010) than I am the rest of my other teen years so that snippet of the show they made actually made me feel oddly cozy despite the not-amazing humour. Ah well, here's to the Steam Deck!

One thing you forgot to mention in why this would have failed was mobile data, as public 4G LTE data service was not even a year old in 2010, and many places could barely get decent 2G signal, which is not good for online gaming, not to mention the cost of data at that time. Heck in 2020 I can drive though a good swath of my state of S. Carolina in the low country on the way to Charleston SC, and James Island, and for miles there will be no cell signal for data period, not even enough signal for emergency calls, and that's with AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile towers.

Probably another reason they decided against releasing it; they knew there was just no possible way to compete against Nintendo in the handheld market. The only things that have come close to Nintendo in the handheld market has been cell phones. But even then, that’s only for the most casual of players, with games like candy crush. For more serious games, nothing else has ever come close to toppling Nintendo’s dominance in handhelds. If sega, and sony couldn’t make a dent in Nintendo’s stranglehold on handheld gaming, what made panasonic think they stood any chance?
