John and Sandra are more than siblings, they are also close friends. They wonder if this would be the case if John had not experienced a tragic brain injury when he was only 19 years old.
From the night of the accident, the Sloan family was profoundly impacted, committing themselves to the long process of helping John re-learn basic skills. He spent four years in rehab with his family beside him every step of the way, and Sandra believes the experience has made her a more patient mother and caregiver.
John eagerly shares his story with other brain injured patients and their families. When complimented on his positive attitude, John replies, “Nothing to be mad about!” An impressive example of the hard-won gift of patience.
