Goalie365 in conversation with one of the legends of the game Mr. Urgen Lama urf Mini.
Urgen Lama; (Mini) was born in the year 1953 to parents Late KD Lama and Late Narmada Devi Lami. He had started his football journey in 1969 from Scottish University Mission Institution (SUMI). In the year 1971 he was hired by West Sikkim’s team to play and got the nick name MINI. He got invitation from king of Bhutan to play him from his National team in 1974 and it was his turning point in his carrier. He played many famous tournament from 1974-81. After that he joined Kolkata Giants Mohammedan Sporting Club in 1982 where his performance was impressive. 1983 was a sad year as he lost his mother but he still continued his passion and he got a budding and young footballer Bhaichung Bhutiya and started coaching him for a short. Mini also visited Biratnager (Nepal) to play tournament and played the wonderful game there. After so many ups and down in his carrier Mini had decided to hang his boot in 1989 but not before another memorable performance in All India Governor’s Gold Cup where he won the best goal of the tournament award.
Mini was the President of the Kalimpong Sports Association and his lifelong love affairs with football continues till date. He is alps working as the coach of Dr. Graham’s Homes for the past three years. He seemed happy as he coaching many young and talented footballers and results are very well. Mini’s contribution to football has not been recognized by the government till date a he not received any awards or honors.
