That itself is a thought. No one here has experienced existing with no thought because any thought about that past experience is a thought happening now. Indeed we are not our thoughts but the question isn't 'who we are' - that itself is a thought myth. The mythology about a self or not self is utterly irrelevant, as is the difference between outside and inside - mythical, a mirage, irrelevant. What is relevant right now, the only place where there can be relevance, where quality occurs - the only thing relevant is the quality of our conduct right now. That is what we are experiencing - our current response to this already imposed set of conditions we confront. All that counts is the quality of what we do, how we respond right now.

I am half into the book, I actually like the repetition. Instead of looking at the repetition as a "lack of new information" I looked at it as a reinforcement of previous information, more like a meditation. This is a great book to read/re-read during hard times in your life and you can listen to it in the background, on a hike. PS note that some people have more than 5 takeways from it. A mentor of mine told me you'll get different things reading it at different times in your life.

Thank you so much for this summary. Listening to the book, I was getting a bit anxious with the unending examples of the 'mind talk' we all deal with. Your summary moved me forward seeing that there was a practical path to follow. With your voice and illustrations the journey became very inviting.

I do have a question with this book. The reality is that in life we do have choices to make. The career we pick, the partner we marry, the kids we do or don’t have. So our role in our lives isn’t as passive as the book makes it seem. And the consequences of making these decisions wrong are huge. And these decisions require reflection both before and after we make them - heavy reflection. So how can we learn, grow, and make wise decisions if we don’t reflect on past moments, past conversations, and past experiences?
@sjoerdsonproductions
5 ай бұрын
can we really make "wrong" decisions? of course, it would seem so that there are some things inherently better or worse than others. who would not rather be a professor than a garbage man? but, these decisions are only meaningful because we add value to them, there is nothing inherently wrong or worse about being a garbage man. maybe you get paid less and you will be a lil stanky, but those are things that we consider to be lesser; as a product of society. i think, right now atleast, that one point of the book is too let things happen (passively as you mention the book says) and accept them. i must agree with you however that life isnt (solely) this passive way of experience but that we indeed have choices to make. especially when it comes to for example leaving or cage of the comfort zone, this must be an active proces, right?! do you have any other thoughts or findings on this?

Hi I think you missed the biggest take away from the book - that truly feeling an emotion in the heart will release the emotion as well as the attachment to what created the emotion in the first place 😊. It be great to talk with you about this.
@PhilosophizeNow

I do believe this is an important point. But I felt this book was more pointed towards discovering your underlying awareness, then learning to control one's thoughts and then finally to realize we cannot change the outside world (or every circumstance) so it is easier to change one's inner world. It is sometimes quite tough to decide which parts of the book are most important and each individual depending on their needs will find different aspects important to them.
@FionaMaguire

@@PhilosophizeNow absolutely it is about gaining awareness. I, or the book, does not mention controlling thoughts - as control is often the opposite to awareness.
@valeriepretzel8186
2 жыл бұрын
I agree. Using the word “control” jarred with me as this is the antithesis of what MS says. He says simply to be the witness, not to judge and to allow thoughts and emotions to come and go and pass through. Controlling them would be pushing them down or acting on them, not what he advocates. Simply be aware and know that you are not your thoughts and stay seated in the centre of Self.

What if you are in coma? Then you are not aware right? But you still exist...
@PhilosophizeNow
4 жыл бұрын
This is a good point, here we come into a number of problems.... there is still much debate around whether or not coma patients are aware and their are many varied reports from coma patients. But leaving that aside do they as the person you know still exist? as they have no personality, movement or behaviors while in a coma? Think of it as similar to being dead, even though the body exists we don't think the person (Personality, character, etc.) exists. Does this make sense?
@THE-X-Force
4 жыл бұрын
@@PhilosophizeNow It only makes sense (to me, anyway) if the person in the coma is in a state of unawareness, and there have just been too many reports to say that that is always the case. In a way, it can be likened to general anesthesia, but there have also been times when people under general anesthesia have also been consciously aware. In fact, what about sleeping? I am unaware of my self during that.

Idea #1 is very poor. "You are that underlying awareness"... No, you are created at the image of God. You are the creator of your own life....not as your life giver, but as your life sculptor: thoughts, feelings, emotions, body, mind, and the awareness are part of the sculptor.
