The problem is... who wants those boxes in 2019? There are way better stuff around to buy for that price. Should i buy a box of Iconic Masters or a box of M12... hmmmm, hard decision! At this point you are just making hype to offload the boxes on the poor patrons.

I'm surprised you didn't point out that M12 boxes (which contain lots of check lands) started going up immediately after Standard printed the check lands. I have no clue how many check lands you would likely get in a box of M12, but the value of those lands went from $1.50 & $3, to $4 & $7. Phantasmal Image went from $18 in the same time.

I went to the EMP museum in Seattle during spring break of 2013 and they had a promotion going on there where there were multiple booths setup throughout the museum and they were giving away FREE core 2012 packs doing some MTG promotion! Needless to say, I went to each and every stand and asked for packs and was usually handed 3 to 4 at each stand, and ended up with over 60 packs split between myself and my 2 brothers. With my cargo shorts loaded up, my brothers and I got back to our hotel room and opened them all, and it was a very memorable time. Not sure if wotc has done anything like this before or since, but core 2012 will always be special to me. Felt like Scrooge Mcduck rolling around in those free packs haha

The question is not did you make a good deal. The question is what could you have reasonably expected to make investing that 26K in alternate investments? Now another commenter below said "well if you invested in XYZ ETF that $65 initial price point would be at $170. But that's cherry picked after the fact. What could Ruby have expected his $65 to gain after 5 years in a healthy economy in a diversified investment? $110, assuming 10%. So on that basis, yes, Ruby made a good deal.

I invested in one sealed Box of 2020, is this a good investment? I still think Core Sets are garbage fire, all them do worse than the regular sets from the same time period (maybe except Dragons Maze). I buy collectables (not magic cards, although I'm interested in getting some PSA cards) because I enjoy collecting, looking at, and displaying them, and occasionally I'll sell one if the profit is too good to resist, but I collect because it's a fun hobby, and the financial side isn't really a concern. Sealed product is different though since you aren't getting to actually enjoy the product, and it's all about the profit.

This is the one set I remember when I started to collect more magic cards I kept buying into not because it was good or anything. It was because this set reprinted all the Titans which was crazy! I always have a soft spot for the Titans because in 2011 they were deemed super strong and in 2012 they were reprinted which yes it was a mistake on Wizards because anytime a 6 mana monster that wins the game is too strong.

You always hear buy low and sell high. Yet it always seems that the market always does the opposite. They don't see a falling stock, and just think of it as being on sale. Hasbro goes down 25% in a sudden drop because a new moon was discovered around Jupiter; everyone sells instead of buying like a regular item at Kohls. Why is it so hard to follow buy low sell high?

rudy, no negativity, just my honest thoughts: lets say 20 people would do that. you would have thousands of booster boxes which wouldnt have been sold otherwise which still have to be absorbed by the market. as the investors would start to liquidate every 3 years, the market would stay saturated almost all the time - so a) no added value because the demand would be lower than the amount of boxes the investors would try to sell, or b) all investors would have to hold their investment and the value might increase, but they couldnt liquidate in order to keep the market dry. the market for magic cards isnt big enough to absorb all those extra booster packs in a healthy way. we're not talking about gold. so on a low scale yes, might work, on a larger scale, no way.

is owning your own house really the best investment? Some people pay more on their mortgage payments than people pay on rent.
@jamesross160
5 жыл бұрын
You interest and mortgage insurance is your rent with a mortgage. Your principal is your equity, and escrow is your Bill's the banks pay for you. Escrow being home insurance, and taxes. Its debatable how good of an investment it is. A lot of it depends on how fast you pay it off, to minimize interest payments, and how much your houses value goes up each year. If your paying 3.6% today's rate, and homes go up 5% each year then your in plus. You may even find not paying off a mortgage at 3.6%, even if you have the cash since you can maybe make more with your cash in other markets. You are also responsible for repairs as an owner. A new roof over 30 years, ac, furnace, appliances which may cut into any gains from the difference between your interest rate and increased market value. Or perhaps your mortgage is more then rent keeping you cash broke and unable to make other investments. Long story short, there are a lot of factors to consider, and what might make sense for one person, doesnt for another.
