The character of Mr. Miyagi was a staff sergeant in the 442nd Infantry Regiment, the most decorated unit in the U.S. military. The medal he holds the scene is, of course, the Congressional Medal of Honor. Even when I saw the movie in the '80s as a teenager, I thought Mr. Miyagi's scene was the best scene in the movie and really explained why he did what he did for Daniel.

The WW2 backstory of Mr Miyagi was perfect and it shows how cruel those camps were to the Japanese. After the War and the Japanese were released, they lost their home and everything. Today probably. Back in the 80's and 90's head hits in a black belt tournament were generally considered valid. The ref usually had the final say, but as long as it was an exception rather than someone repeatedly going for the head, it would be okay. The occasional head hit, back in the days before we knew what a concussion could do, were valid targets. Still is in many places.

Wow 😮 I’d remember watching this movie as a kid . In Des Moines IOWA. I was only 12 years old . Love this movie had a big crush on Elizabeth Shue. A bunch of my friends work on a summer job ( detasseling corn ) made some money to buy movie tickets. Lots of great memories. Life was much simpler as a kid then .

I now rate movies by how often I like to watch them. Some "great" movies, I don't really want to see again -- like Titanic. Many films are not so "great", yet I enjoy seeing them again -- like Dogma, or Ex Machina. But, a few films, I can watch many times over -- like Maltese Falcon, Astaire/Rogers films, Thin Man series, Connery Bond films, Blade Runner, and all Marx Bros. films. Karate Kid is in that category. You can watch this film many times, and it is still entertaining and touching.

@Andrew Smith exactly! She's merely a plot device in this film and could have been played by any generic 80's starlet. Look for the Looper video "Untold Truths About Cocktail" instead!

@@rumblefish9 Yeah that's how much I love Kumiko too. Still doesn't mean Ali is forgettable. I voice everywhere how much I love Kumiko and want her to come back more than any other character for S3. But that still doesn't make Ali a forgettable character. We can love Kumiko and still like Ali. But of course if you want to forget Ali that's your decision.
