They know that A: He knows the game better than practically anyone else, and B: If he were fired, the community shitstorm that would follow would instantly kill runescape dead. In that light, him being kept around could also be seen as a sign of a smart employer, because many higher-ups nowadays don't want to hear criticism and will fire employees or threaten you otherwise for levying it against them. Even if the boss makes major mistakes and doesn't know what's good for the game, him not firing Ash makes him more competent than most by a country mile.

I wish I could pinpoint when I stopped playing RS. I was in the top 100, level 126 somewhere between 2005 and 2007, and like the 90th person to 91 rune crafting. I don't even recognize OSRS, and that's okay. A part of me thought I'd regret not "making memories" in real life, but I think it shaped who I am. Without trying to be the top level in RuneScape, I wouldn't have strived to be a top level software engineer in real life as an adult. I do remember the end of the wilderness too. Its so funny to me, how a playerbase of 1.3m, loses 500k players to a privately run 2006 server. They then question wether people want the old version back or not. That is absolutely wild, and shows how out of touch some of Jagex employees where back then. The players opinions matters a whole lot more than your emplyees opinions in an MMORPG
@Numbers_Game

Private servers are a different beast and are usually treated differently. While I've only tried one or two Runescapes private servers, they have a similar monetization principle to say WoW private servers. There is no monthly fee, but you can "give donations" that will award you with currency which can be either cosmetic or P2W. I would also be sceptical of the playerbase that apparently has a problem with MTX only to jump ship on a private server where you can buy even more of an advantage with IRL money. What good are 500k players if majority are playing because it's free and the rest are hypocrites? With the poll they at least knew they had half a million people ready to pony up for the service.

@@Numbers_Game But you have to realise how long the process was for jagex to listen to their customers. It is an absilutely wild timeline of events, where they push back on consumer feedback and push on with updates people heavily adress they dont want. It killed off most in world trading, absolutely nuked the industries that were operating on the Forums for Trade. There was literally a trading floor going off in the forums, you’d have to bump your thread every 5/10 mins that’s how busy it was. Buying BS at 100gp ea spinning like 10k of em, PAYING PEOPLE to do so in gp and then selling them for 150-170 ea depending on when the US servers woke up. Sometimes you’d have someone desparate for a sale who would offer 180gp each and you bit that guys arm off, you dropped what you were doing and sold all you had regardless of where you are in your processing.

I remember when I first tried OSRS in 2017 going to where Fist of Guthix was in the wilderness to go train up magic, only to find that it and some of the better content from 2008-2011 didn't make it into the game.

Its a small detail that is often overlooked when people talk about this, but its so important to showing how Jagex worked at that time. For me, this was the big update that made me feel Runescape was dead. Adding in microtransactions and changing their rules quietly, made it feel like could change whatever they wanted and they weren't going to be open about it to the players. It created this feeling of separation that Jagex typically didn't have. At least not for monetary things which could affect the game so drastically.

The only beef I have with RS3 is the MTX, though playing Ironman I don't notice any difference between OSRS and RS3 in terms of the core mechanics that I like about Runescape, being the grinding out of skills. Main reason for Ironman is that shait called the Grand Exchange, honestly, a lot of videos I see of OSRS is mainly someone buying the top gear and everything they need and stand in the G.E doing their skill levelling. This is why Ironman is preferable in both RS3 and OSRS. Sure you can blame EOC being "dull" but honestly, most of the times in OSRS the combat consist of standing in 1 spot with your prayer, it's not exactly the most engaging system out there. All in all, both versions work for me at least. I play what ever I feel like playing there and then and don't see one being neither superior nor inferior to the other

It's a mix of bitterness and parroting, specially since a lot of people tried the 1.0 version of EoC that was REALLY shit, but never tried the modern one. You can see with a lot of OSRS content creators that try Rs3, almost all of them enjoy the game, but later quit because of the one true problem with Rs3, lack of a decent flow of good new content

Firstly, I just wanna say thank you for this video. It’s very well organized and put together. With that said, I want to say that while you were explaining the problem for behind why they removed the wilderness as well as trading. which caused and marked the end of the golden age of RuneScape. I sat and thought about the problem and the two options they were seemingly trapped between of no longer being able to accept card payments, which would essentially destroy their company or making a decision that would also make at least half of their player base, unhappy. And I realized, after sitting with that problem for about five minutes, my first thought was how unfortunate it was to be in such a situation and and the realization that it’s perfectly understandable why they made the decision that they did. But then I thought was there really no solution? I to tried to put myself in the shoes of say the CEO or the founder and really try to fathom another possibility other than these two options that they were seemingly trapped between. And I realized that yes there is another option and possibly could’ve been an amazing option that could’ve solved multiple standing issues with the game and an actually would be a solution to issues that MMO‘s in general and games in general have been facing as well as continue to faces as AI/more sophisticated botting methods Continue to be developed. And I realized what they could’ve done is they could have kept the wilderness and kept trading and yes discontinued all card payments. And instead, they could’ve made it so that if you wanted to pay for membership, you could go to GameStop and pay for membership only through buying a physical card with a code on the back of that card. And I realized you could also make it so that you would only be able to buy the card if you have an ID or your parents come with their ID to buy the card. This would solve that issue of card payments as the card payments would be occurring in person and would not legally be connected to Jagex, but to the third-party sellers such as GameStop. Now, perhaps this would take a toll on their sells, as you wouldn’t be able to so easily purchase membership as you would have to go to a physical location to acquire it. But this may not actually have hurt their sells much, as especially at the time it was incredibly common to go to GameStop or to a physical location to buy a game. And the player base and popularity was already so massive. That if they would have clearly explained the problem and the solution. I think players would have rushed to buy them. Not only that it could have even in an odd way helped the games sells as it would’ve developed a kind of exclusivity or culture. Behind attaining membership. And lastly I also realize you could simultaneously solve the issue of bot accounts with this method as well because every members account would naturally then have to be associated to an ID or physical person. You actually could take this further if you wanted to and make it so that the only way to actually register an account would be to go into a physical location in person. If they wanted to, they could even make it so they have their own physical Jagex stores/locations. That people would have to come into to create their account to play RuneScape. There are various different strategies they could employ or ways they could do this. And the exclusivity factor could give a weight to owning a RuneScape account that no other MMO would have. So then imagine a RuneScape, where you know every single account is a real player. And the wilderness was never taken down and trading was never taken down, and the grand exchange didn’t exist. And because each account would be directly associated to a persons ID or to them physically coming to a location. Hacking as well as botting or doing any other kinds of malicious activities would have much more severe penalties. As you couldn’t just easily make a new account. And people couldn’t just so easily steal your account as your account would be connected or associated with your physical identity. Account recovery would be very easy. And punishment for anyone stealing your account also would be very easy. As you could simply track the items that were stolen from your account and track simply to which account they were passed to. Something like this would’ve solved so many problems at that time and also would solve a lot of issues coming up with gaming today again as botting and AI really makes doing anything in these games practically pointless. Imagine, we could have had a sustained golden age in RuneScape far beyond 2008. Even more so RuneScape and culture that would develop behind it. Could have blown up even more. And the player interaction and player economy would have evolved even more. Jobs such Rune running, cowhiding and more would have continued and more would emerged. And entire ecosystem that would be fair and essentially protected from botting or exploitation would continue to exist, develop and evolve over a decade.

Technically if they to, they could still do this. Imagining a new Runscape, with updated graphics, but still fully retaining the original aesthetic. And you could look much further away, see the sky, and see buildings from a more ground level. And it’s a fresh start. Everyone gets a fresh start, no grand exchange. And new editions to the map, as well as new quests skills and resources. And the ability for players to own physical land. And build their own towns, and cities, and to build their own armies, and fight for that land. And perhaps a continuation of the story. Of the god wars. Where the gods come back and fight over the realm as they once did. These wars would completely change the world. As it once did before, hence how the wilderness was created during the last god war.

I fell into a really awkward position when the EOC scism came about. My "golden age" of playing Runescape was 2010, before EOC, but after a lot of other players' nostalgic vision of the game. I remember grinding Fist of Guthix for the spiky berserker shields. I remember really liking the new HD models and animations, while others didn't. I remember loving the new Dungeoneering skill, while a lot of others disliked it. When EOC did come out, I wasn't too happy with it. I felt it was too much of a change. But when 2007scape came back, I didn't like that either because it was before my time. I was stuck between two games I loved and forced to pick a side. I still play RS3 now. I love the world and story, I love the combat system, I love the new content and skills. But I absolutely hate the prevelance of microtransactions souring it all.

I appreciate the inclusion of the 2006scape server development in Jagex's decision to bring back old school servers, its a massive influence that a lot of historical reports gloss over, but from memory it was a $2-5 donation with well over 500,000 accounts, that data was undeniable for Jagex to ignore.

EOC combat hasn't changed in any remarkable way since its original rollout, meaning it has been around longer than classic and runescape 2 combined (other than OSRS). It's still using the same old generic and uninspiring combat abilities with a few additions tacked on at higher levels. It has got to be the most boring system of its kind in the entire industry and they've done nothing to fix it. THAT is why rs3 is failing. Plenty of other MMOs with similar combat systems have far worse MTX than RS3 but they at least make their combat system fun and engaging, but not jagex, that would require actually investing into their own products which they hate doing.
@nexpersonal5066
Ай бұрын
"EOC combat hasn't changed" thats straight up untrue, the 1.0 version was completely garbage and clunky (thats why it flopped) it received a lot of changes to make it smoother, theres not even the Revolution system on launch, it is not EoC that makes modern Rs3 suck, if anything modern EoC is the one only thing it has over OSRS, what makes RS3 suck is the fact that the new content either sucks or is too slow to release, content is always king, and for every 1 good new content Rs3 gets, osrs gets 5, this is why RS3 is dying, MTX poisoned the well for content because it's more money efficient to make content for the cash shop than to make good new content for gameplay
@schmiddy8433

@@nexpersonal5066 you deliberately left out a major part of that statement "... In any REMARKABLE way" Yeah they have tuned the combat and added revolution for AFK, but EOC combat is almost identical to its original rollout. The combat fucking sucks and always has. It didn't flunk because it was clunky, otherwise almost everyone would have come back. People didn't come back because the system fundamentally sucked ass.

@@schmiddy8433 Revolution+ and the accuracy hit changes from post Necro changed massively how the combat flows, it REMARKABLY changed how you play, with how switches and specs work, specially since the way the combat system works interacts greatly with weapons, new weapons and ability codexes change a lot how it plays. No one comes back to RS3 because why would they ? Why would yo leave OSRS that has always great content to go to a game where the new Tier 95 Armor from the hardest dungeon to date is a reskin from the MTX shop, CONTENT IS KING, and RS3 has SHIT content schedule
@schmiddy8433

@@nexpersonal5066 Ask literally anyone else in the OSRS community if they like the combat in RS3 And to give you a point of comparison, by the time the Wrath of the Lich King expansion for WoW was released (4 years after the original game launch) WoW had hundreds of different 'spells' and abilities. Each one had unique effects that synergized with any number of other abilities to create different rotations and many people spent a lot of their time just theory crafting the best rotations. What do you have in RS3 after a decade of EOC? One dimensional abilities that do one thing, maybe are designed to work with one other ability, and that's about it. Everyone is still using the same boring and uninspired abilities from 10 years ago.
@nexpersonal5066

@@schmiddy8433 RS3 Rotations literally changed a lot, necromancy it's is own whole new thing, EOF was huge, literally every old spec became valid again. ALSO OFC the average OSRS player will say they hate the RS3 combat, because they either don't like the style overall, haven't played it and are just parroting, or well, are one of the multiple streamers you see that actually played the game and liked it but didn't stay/play casually cuz the content sucks. Theres so much to hate and complain from RS3, but complaining about modern day EOC is peak "quit during EOC release, never played again, thinks that they know what they are talking about" muting notifs

I was a player who quit with the EOC. And I didn't even do combat, it was because of the wild changes to the interfaces. The legacy mode and pre-eoc combat was a thing, but even today, it's just not the same game it was when I started playing at 9 years old in 2004. I'm very much disappointed that I didn't vote in the rollback. I had already quit and forgotten RuneScape by then, fully moved on to Minecraft and Skyrim. But when I heard about old school runescape, it was when they had just started talking about making a mobile version or something. I returned to RuneScape totally shocked at what it had become. I was so happy it had been brought back, and I've been playing ever since with only the occasional breaks. I'm so glad the people managed to get it back and that the devs have invested so much into it. Such an incredible game!
