Actually, it isn't a rubber liner. The canteen is double walled with a vacuum between the two walls, like a thermos. The rubber piece just goes into the neck to retain the stopper. He didn't show it, but you can pull the short rubber piece out by simply twisting and pulling.

Living in Maine, I have been hiking/bushcraphting in the teens and single digits for weeks. IMy canteen kit consists of a Kleen Kanteen 40 oz.,an 18 oz GSI and Pathfinder Stove Ring pack in a Maxpedition 10'x4' hydration sleeve with a 6"x5" exterior pocket which I stow my drink kit. This canteen kit has been in single digit weather for 14 plus hours without freezing. I have rocked alot of canteen kits and this kit beats them all! Some times you really do get what you pay for. Approx. cost = $100

THANK YOU DAVE !!!

I went out and bought one as soon as I saw this video. IT IS THE BOMB! Talk about usable! It weighs less filled and is kinder on your body when carried. You can reheat your water and pour it back in to KEEP it above freezing, too. This is just such a great design that I'm GLAD that Dave found one to talk about here.

The cool thing about military surplus is that it has been keeping us in the military alive for longer than the hipsters working at REI have been alive. I know that a lot of the surplus stuff is not the absolute best quality, but it gets the job done at a price that the common man can afford. Thanks for the post Dave.

I hope that one is an improved model from the one I was issued while in the National Guard we had rusting issues with ours (if they were not perfectly dried after use) we soon went back to the plastic ones also --if the water does freeze inside it takes a long time to thaw! the cup , however was excellent for all reasons you mentioned and the cover was well designed. love your videos -- keep up the good work!

Another awesome, awesome video. I just wanted to put out that the water in that canteen will, in fact, freeze. Its just gonna take longer. I live in Canada and own this exact canteen and I've had it freeze on me. That being said, I was testing the product so I left it outside on my porch overnight and it got to about -30 or -35 celsius. All in all this it is a great product and I would highly recommend it. Love the videos Dave, keep 'em coming brutha.

These are really good canteens but are prone to freeze in the neck area in extreme cold. I was issued this canteen while serving in the Army in Alaska. We would avoid the freezing problem by tying the canteen to paracord and hanging it from our necks under our outer garments.
@BamaBackwoodsman
12 жыл бұрын
@wildernessoutfitters We were issued those canteens when i was stationed in Alaska the other reason for the rubber stopper type opening is to allow for expansion if the water does freeze. it acts like a freeze plug on your car engine water expands as it freezes so it has to have somewhere to go thus the plug type cap that is easily pushed out when the water expands and freezes. the lining will let the water freeze at a slower rate but it will eeventually freeze if left out too long.

I liked this review for the simple fact that it reminded me that something simple that we take for granted, water, can become unavailable even if we pack it in. Winter presents the greatest survival challenges in North America. Quite frankly, its the only time I'd get worried about survival. Since water is the #1 necessity, this video is a good reminder that we need to be careful with how we handle it in the cold. Also, good to see snow finally came to Ohio.

I carry a 3ltr bladder inside my Rocket Pack backpack. Last weekend I slept out in -8 with a friend of mine who wanted to try out some new kit he had. I found that the water inside the backpack was fine BUT the drinking tube that passes outside was totally frozen inside. So I had water but the normal means of access was blocked! I got round it by opening up the large filler cap inside the backpack and pouring some out that way. So this Arctic canteen is not such a bad idea Dave, thanks.

If I'm not mistaken, the liner in the canteen is insulation, so it only slows freezing, It doesn't totally prevent it. which is probably another reason the canteen cap is just a plug. It can press out if the canteen does start to freeze, instead of the whole thing tearing apart. Another good trick is to turn Ur bottle upside down. Nothing is more frustrating than having half a bottle of good water, with a thick layer of ice over it.

When purchasing one on these canteens check the date of manufacturing. The one Dave has was dated 1984. I served in a NATO op in Norway and also traned in Alaska both above the Arctic circle in 1978 &79. We carried these carteen and they were crap. These early models did not have a rudder bladder and were very fragile. After a week of being out in the field there was not one left in my platoon that didn't freeze. Hopefully the rubber bladder corrected the problem.

Hi Dave. The only propbem I can see with this bottle would be the rubber linning on it. I know youre gonna boil in the cup, but I would think of boiling water in the bottle AND the cup on one fire if I need the water fast. Then I would thing about some kind of outside layer for preventing it before freezing. Just my way Im going through sigma part:) Thank you and have a nice time when making other videos:)

@vettepilot427 Technical info: salt, since it separates into Na+ and Cl-, lowers freezing point twice as much as a compound which does not dissociate when it dissolves. This is why calcium chloride, CaCl2, is used to salt roads--it dissolves into 3 rather than 2 ions: 1 Ca2+ and 2 Cl- ions. So it's 1.5 times as effective as normal salt in lowering the freezing point of water. `Results depend on the amount of solute and type. E.g. I'm not sure what happens to chlorine dioxide when it dissolves.

I usedd an insulated bottle on a trip last year. The temps were below 0F. I was nearly out of water so I put some snow in my water and tucked the bottle under my coat thinking the snow would melt into the water. Wrong. Insulation works both ways, duh. What I ended up with was a full bottle of thick slush that I couldn't even pour. I hiked the last two hours eating snow. The water was frozen when I got home after another two hours in the truck with the heat on. Lesson learned.

@mysss29 Thanks very much for the info. I know that we also use salt for the same reason when making homemade ice cream. My reason for asking is for alternatives for those that don't have a winter canteen. If we use some kind of water treatment that lowers the freezing point an appreciable amount, a winter canteen may be unnecessary in all but extreme conditions. One would assume the military already thought of that since they issued iodine and winter canteens both.

@vettepilot427 Any solute will both lower the freezing point and raise the boiling point of water. So anything ionic, like salt or an iodide water disinfectant, will lower the freezing point of water. I assume that any other chemical treatment like chlorine dioxide also dissolves in the water, which means that it also lowers the freezing point. I'm not sure HOW MUCH a given treatment lowers the freezing point of water (there's probably a simple formula). So feel free to experiment! (continued)
