Wuxi AppTec is a Chinese company that makes Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (API's) for many blockbuster drugs in the US. Its API's are used in therapies for several types of cancer and leukemia, CF, drug-resistant HIV, and obesity.
Almost all the profits for these drugs go to US biotech companies. For Wuxi's cystic fibrosis drug, Vertex had revenues of nearly $9 billion; Imbruvica, the leukemia treatment, brought in $5.9 billion for Janssen and Abbie.
Members of the US Senate, however, voted to ban Wuxi from doing business with any company that has a contract with the federal government. This proposal was alarming to biotech and pharma industry insiders, who rely on Wuxi to provide them with low-cost API's. The industry is also facing severe challenges in merely producing drugs for the market at all: drug shortages in the US are at its highest level in over 20 years.
