In this video we chase the V/Line Bairnsdale N Class locomotive-hauled train as it travels through Gippsland. Trains 8460 and 8469 between Melbourne and Bairnsdale are the last two N Class locomotive-hauled trains to operate in Gippsland after the other Bairnsdale services were swapped with Vlocity DMU's in August 2018. These trains are often nicknamed the Gippslander which was the historic name used by the Victorian Railways for their flagship train between Melbourne and Bairnsdale.
We see the Gippslander filmed across two days in February 2024 where we see locomotives N467 & N455 at multiple locations on the Gippsland Line, including Garfield, Yarragon, Traralgon (including climbing up the 1 in 50 Traralgon Bank), Rosedale, and Stratford.
Part of the reason why the N Class trains still run to Gippsland is that Bairnsdale doesn't have suitable overnight stabling for Vlocity trains. However a new stabling yard is currently under construction and is set to be completed before the end of the year. Once this is completed the Gippslander will be swapped out for a Vlocity, marking an historic end for locomotive-hauled trains to Gippsland.
