That’s probably an intentional marketing choice by the other platforms. Vanguard Funds are generally cheap. If it’s the case their funds are cheaper on Hargreaves Lansdown, that is interesting to say the least considering the platform…
@henryr2954
3 ай бұрын
I'm not talking about the funds themselves, but above a certain level the ISA platform fees are lower as they're capped at £45 for shares on HL instead of £375 on Vanguard. So if you hold over £30,000 in a fund on Vanguard and pay 0.15% you're better off buying the ETF version on HL and paying the £45pa fee cap instead. Another thing to bear in mind is dealing fees. If you invest by direct debit HL has none, but if you invest outside of DD you'll pay £11.95 per deal so if you're doing that make sure you have more than £30k in there.

The app is very clean. it's stacks my SIPP under my ISA, with a total portfolio value at the top. I'm still discovering places I can drill down to more information, in that respect, it would probably be useful to have some sort of universal indication of 'more info', although I suspect after a few weeks use, I'll find all the bits I want. Security is obviously high on the agenda, even a brief diversion from the app requires reauthentication - making biometric authentication almost essential. I'm testing on Android, the interface appears identical to the iOS version at a glance.

Vanguard launched an app in Germany called Vanguard Invest Direkt in 2022. It looked the same as this app. Saving Vanguard ETFs was free of cost. But in late 2023 they closed the app and account. Customers were informed by Email. And no customer support was offered on this topic. My Wife had to sell the ETFs by a specific date. Does Vanguard provide any explanation why they closed the app in Germany and launched it in UK? In my view Vanguard can close the app any time, if they don't see it financially successful.

With regards to your commentary on the 'platform fee', it's annoying their are other routes to invest in Vanguard funds cheaper than on their own platform. However, from a investment perspective in a largish pension fund, it is capped @ £375 pa - which is an absolute bargain. I moved a chunk of my workplace pension to Vanguard last year, wish I'd done it sooner - I've immediately saved over £1000 pa in fees. I'm not sure I'd trust all the other providers of Vanguard funds with a significant amount of my funds.

What would be really innovative is an option to set your preferred allocation of funds and be able to choose self-rebalance, or auto rebalance every 6, 12 mths, or never rebalance. It’s a good step forward. Is the bigger question why have an app that increases poor short term habits- we should be leaving this well alone. It could cause panic decisions. Adding friction to a process is a good behavioural tactic when you need to slow people down. The website also has the great monthly investment performance breakdown which is really good. I've tested the app, and having no option to see how individual funds perform (by percentage value) is a disappointment. That's a should have feature and not a nice to have. The fund/ETF page just shows the daily change and not the change since you bought it. At least a toggle button would help. I know we can calculate the percentage ourselves, but sometimes we open app to see a quick overview of funds that performed or underperformed. I've suggested the feature, and hopefully, that will get rolled out soon.

I've had the app for a couple of days and confirm that it replicates their website so still a bit clunky when it comes to buying funds (which I already have). Most disappointing thing is that on the front page after it tells you the portfolio value, it then breaks this down by account alphabetically i.e. GIA, Pensions and Stocks & shares. My GIA account (which has an account value of £0) is therefore at the top and takes up most of the screen, and need to swipe up to get to the Pension and ISA accounts which I suspect for most of us is where we hold our funds. It would have been useful if you could have had a facility to move the accounts up and down. My score compared to three other apps is 7/10

I don't think it's wise to have something like Vanguard in app form for two reasons. 1) I wouldn't want to potentially show anyone in public what kind of cash I'm holding in there, there's still the slim possibility someone could extort you for that cash at knife/gun point, extreme I know, but it has happened in the past with mobile banking apps to people. 2) Unlike a current or savings account, you shouldn't be checking your investments too regularly, mostly because it's pretty much pointless but also because it goes against the mindset of long-term investing.
