I bought an 1150GS Adv in 2002 which replaced my bouncy Honda Transalp. After 11 years I sold it to a friend of my daughters after reaching 71 & much nagging from the wife & getting a rescue dog. I much regretted it especially when I found out he had sold it on after losing his job. When the dog was run over I bought a K1300R. Had it a few years & replaced it with an R1200R LC thinking insurance would be cheaper. It wasn't & at 78 I'm now finding it difficult to get insurance. Of the 4 bikes I've had the Adventure was far my favourite. Taking me to eastern Europe & even commuting into central London for a year before taking EVR. The GSs are all really great bikes

Congratulations Nick! A word of caution about Givi top box mounting plates - my one is made of aluminium and ruptures from riding on unsurfaced roads or bad tarmac. Replace it and it ruptures again! My advice is to ensure that all pannier and top box mounts are made of steel. The Bulov (?) kit looked to be a good option. Btw, remember your fellow KZitemr, Moto Phoenix (also in Soton or Hants I believe), has done 400,000 miles on his BMW airhead GS - your one is barely run-in! Stay safe and enjoy riding😉

Therefore, taking every opportunity to enjoy a diverse range of bikes and riding is a no-brainer. That's the reason I bought a second bike to complement my R1250GS.

A very thorough justification for upgrading (is that a word here) to the GSA. According to your riding style mostly road/ hwy. I think it would be a different matter if you were travelling off road. The weight of the gsa with all the kit might be a bit more challenging. Up in Canada we have a number of off road trails to tackle. I plan to upgrade my 2009 gs to the 2020 gs so your review of your past bike was very informative. Thankyou for that. Cheers, 64yrs and still going.

Have it while you can! A couple of observations which might be useful. I wouldn't have the frames with the twist fittings as someone could nick those while you're away and then you'd be really stuffed. I've just bought some tank protection for my GS TE exclusive as the matt paint marks so easily so you might want to fit that too? I had both the alarm and SOS button on my last bike but didn't spec them on this as the Alarm was so pathetic and on my GS at least there was no fob so you had to either have it in auto alarm mode which was a PITA or off. I didn't spec the SOS button as where I ride the mobile signal is often poor so it was bringing up the large error message on the TFT virtually every ride I went on so I now have the what3words app which isn't quite as good but it's free. Enjoy your new GSA, no doubt we'll see it soon😉
@nickhodgeUK
4 жыл бұрын
Cheers Adrian. Couple of points. The alarm has a fob on mine. It’s the BMW logo in the middle of the key. Once I think for alarm and twice for alarm/immobiliser but don’t test me on that 😂 the SoS incessantly popping up on TFT I had with my late 1200 but a TFT software update used a longer timer ‘out of service’ with the SIM to stop that. I’ve never used it but have spoken to one person on a ride in his own who tumbled. It worked flawlessly although he had the operator hold on and in the end did extrapolate himself from under the bike 😬
@Bazza47
4 жыл бұрын
@@nickhodgeUK That's good to know they've come to their senses Nick. I always felt cheated not having a fob with my my2016 1200 when other BMWs had one and as I said it was a pain to use e.g. when moving the bike around as I needed to have the ignition on or the alarm would go off. If I'd known they'd fixed the problem of the SOS system bringing up the warning so often I might have spec'd it again as I can see the benefits of when it works properly but it became too distracting for me on my my2018 1200 which was why I didn't go for it this time not knowing they'd done something about it. Doh........

Enjoy the new bike! Bumot luggage every time. Much much better than the alternatives. Have used for the last three years and 25,000 miles on my previous and current GSA. Waterproof and dustproof as advertised with an excellent rubber seal around the lids. The hinges are great too as have resistance on them so only move when you want them to. Use them on the std BMW racks, which are only four Torx bolts if you want to remove them when not using the boxes.

just bought the Bumot Evo today Adventure Bike Shop are doing 10% off in Aug so as little at £100.00 difference to Givi and no contest really, you can open the Bumot Lids while you have the 58 ltr Givi top box on, you will have to dismount the Givi lids on the panniers to get anything out of them, Bumot also have a friction hinge on the lid so you wont loose you fingers when the lid catches the wind. They seem excellent, frames are Zinc coated then power coated good value for money !!. Dont forget you by cheap you buy twice. LOL

These cases have taken everything I have thrown at them. 100% waterproof, dropped fully laden in Croatia and no problems. I went for the black anodised version. I cannot comment on the other brands but recommend Givi. If you do choose Givi plan on getting the key barrel set otherwise you need to carry 3 different keys with you! Take care and enjoy your new beast.

Hi Nick, hope you are well and great decision there! You may recall I commented on the last vid saying I had just bought the R1250GS Adventure TE Exclusive as well, 2 weeks later and definitely no regrets! In regards to luggage, I had the the GIVI Trekkers on my Vstrom1000 that I traded in for the BMW, and I now have the Bumots on the BMW after a lot of research (Adventure Bike TV on KZitem have a great vid in season one testing different panniers, which includes dropping them off cliffs and shooting them with crossbows!). I never had an issue with the GIVI Trekkers, and in fact am still using the top box on the BMW, however I have a lot more confidence in the Bumots and they feel like they secure to the racks much more strongly. I have never heard of any issues with the GIVI Trekkers coming off, but I was never 100% confident in the mechanism that holds them on. The other nice thing about the Bumots is that they sit within the the width of the handlebars, so filtering with them on is easy. In regards to the toolbox, I also had the GIVI one on the Vstrom. I now have the touratech one that fits on the BMW pannier rack. They both cost roughly the same, but the Touratech one is bigger, stronger and the locking mechanism is much better. Now, I don't work for them, so please don't think this is an add (I just believe is supporting small businesses), but I bought my Bumots and Touratech toolbox from The Adventure Bike Shop. They are a lovely little family run business and they currently have a code for 10% off everything when you order online at the moment 👍🏻

Congrats brother. The aluminium cases and top box are definitely the way to go. Reference the "road tax" in the UK, here in Queensland, Australia our m/cycle registration is about $460.00 per year if you leave the bike as a two seater. If you go solo, it's about $340.00 per year.I always solo my bikes as my wife has no interest in being a pillion. Yay for small mercy's!! More to spend on accessories. Nick … be careful ! 😳. The key thing … This applies more to you guys in traffic ridden U.K. (I’ve retired to the Algarve where we only have sunny, beautifully surfaced, empty roads )… is the question: “Can you filter on it?” For the GSA; you can’t! The aluminium cans are wider than the handlebars .. and hence you can’t filter. The R1250GS TE tends to be equipped with vario panniers . These are narrower than the bars and enable you to filter through traffic! Utter madness imho, if you live in the U.K. to buy a bike that constrains you to sitting in traffic.
@nickhodgeUK
3 жыл бұрын
Now we disagree. My panniers (Bumot 45 and 37) are well inside the bars and narrower than fully expanded Varios. Generally I only fit panniers at the same times as I would fully expand the varios I had in my GS (week tour) so filtering is truly no different. Also the hazards flashing the Denali spots alternating tends to move most aside too. I do agree the Algarve would be much better overall though. Ride safe 👍🏻

Congratulations on your new bike, you only live once so why not! I guess we did see that coming ! One thing i do if I'm part exchanging a bike is to take off all accessories from the bike as the dealers don't normally give you anymore money regardless of whats on your bike, with the GS being such a popular model selling the accesories would not be a problem, When i bought my GS this year i was looking for 2nd hand Vario cases and top box and i would have happily paid £££s for them but couldn't find any for sale, so i ended up buying new ones, likewise with the crash bars. i look foreword to seeing the new bike..i bet your feeling like a kid at christmas!

Cheers Dougie. It’s strange. In general they want the varios back as I think the bike has to have something and that’s more common GS fitment. The bars I think I could have insisted but they had a small battle scar where she went off the side stand so expect they’ll remove them anyhow? 👍🏻

The one item not mentioned was insurance, has the premium gone up due to the increased bike value? Its possible BMW bikes will increase by at least 10%, plus 20% VAT on the 10%, and another price rise maybe included if sterling depreciates, I discussed matter with BMW salesmen and he said that BMW U.K. are preparing for the price hike. Therefore you have made a further saving on paper depending on circumstances next year. I thought about changing from an RT to the GSA, I live in London bike parked on driveway, comprehensive insurance for RT £120.00, GSA £850.00 refused to quote for TPFT? I have a 5 series car, much higher value than bike, insurance £350.00. It’s probably the risk of theft aspect. Need to move to somewhere with a concrete bomb shelter for a garage. Happy birthday, great month for a birthday, always happy memories of sunny B’days and enjoy many miles of safe riding on the GSA. Many happy returns of the day, J

Thanks Jean. The insurance was £11 more for the remainder of my policy to Nov 3rd so two months I’m only expecting £60/£70pa which was another thing I checked. It does have alarm and tracker and in garage so all those help and certainly outside London. Why can’t people buy their own stuff 😡

Nick Hodge Probably an acceptable insurance increase, not that we have much choice in the matter. Potential £2500 price hike for 2021 model post 1.1.21. I went through the same 'man maths' a year last may when I traded in a 2 year 7K Triple Black GSA for the HP GSA. At that time there was only the 2 year warranty so I factored 3 years of extended warranty for the TB to my calculation :) Enjoy your new ride.

Be interesting to see the new models but here in the UK it is possible without a deal with the EU they may be much more expensive. I suspect only temporarily as European manufacturers will create mayhem if their prices jump 20%. I heard from my dealer Euro 5 compliance and probably change of colours as some have already done???

I have the Givi Trekker racks on my R1250GS which are also detachable racks. Which is very handy, they require a special key to take them off, so you can do work/clean the rear end without the frames being in the way. By the way have you seen the reports regarding “The gs’s not starting due to battery/ valve problems ? Search “BMW R1250 starting problems” some people have been having quite a few problems. BMW not being particularly helpful, still read the threads, there is about 10 pages of it. Also do the same search on YOU TUBE see what you think !!!

Should indeed go for Bumot boxes coz it's totally waterproof. Needless to say, u are saving on the pannier's rack. Whereas, Givi one's just water resistance. I used that before n was horrendous. Heavy rains, water will sip in defo. Kinda flooded inside. Lol. As for SW Motech, I'm unable to give any reviews. Never use that before. Hope this helps!
Congratulations on deciding to go with the GSA! My personal favorite! The Givi's are an excellent choice for the top box. But if it was me buying these farkles, I'd go with the Jesse Luggage Challenger panniers. They don't work with the factory mounting racks but are a better investment IMHO than all the other side panniers in the market. Whatever you choose, good luck and Happy Touring with the GSA!

Hi Nick, I can't really comment about the shift the GSA being that I'm a recent convert go the GS myself, buying an HP 1250GS TE in March (excellent timing!). I have however bought the givi 58litre top box which is very good but I find a little wide and not very deep. Neither is a problem but it could do with another couple of inches in depth really. Another manufacturer you might like to investigate however is Bullshift. I've been considering getting Just their panniers. They do come with racks and boxes and appear to be well reviewed. Might be worth a look.

You’re just how motorcyclists build ‘stables’. That bike will owe you nothing so reckon you’ll keep it and just buy a new one in a few years. Mate with a GS did the same with his Rocket III. Great choice, just waiting for my bike to be rego’d, hopefully the dealership has it done by tomorrow. Here in Australia we mostly get the bikes with all of the packs because you probably won’t sell it second hand without them. That’s how I ordered mine, no SOS here of course but I’m ok with that. I was tempted by the Kalmata, very stylish but I have a weak spot for the Rallye version (HP) so I went that way, going for the Bumot soft side bags and a black alloy top box. I know I’m going to enjoy mine, I’m sure you will enjoy yours.

Hi Nick. whatever inspires you...! Hello Nick.. I knew you'd swap....👍😁 I've had my GSA 1250TE for coming up to 1 year and it's a great machine (despite the front calipers leaking like a sieve!). It's only covered 2700 miles thanks in the main to the Covid overreaction! (Another story!) Congratulations on your decision! You won't regret it. As I mentioned last time I commented, it's worth it for the fuel range alone. On a recent 'bimble' I had a 390 mile range and covered 360 with plenty of juice left. Pannier wise.. I have BMW black ally but only because I got a good (ish) deal and 0% finance. The Bumot would be my choice. Nowt wrong with the other stuff at all, but I think the Bumot are slightly more 'engineered' myself. Which ever way you go, you'll love it! Keep us posted on the pick up, accessories install etc.. I'm heading (hopegully) to the Ardennes on mine early September. Maybe!🤞🤞

Aw, pannier decisions. You don't seem to be concerned with overall width and that gives you plenty of choices. I live in southern California and lane split a lot of the time. While it's true you can save the side panniers for when you are touring, I like the idea of panniers that are within the handlebars. If you measure from lever to lever that width is around 38". If you measure from the actual outside of the bar ends it is around 36". The BMW boxes are well over 40" (42" I think?), the Givi set up you referenced is around 41" and the SW Motech are right at 40". That is one of the main benefits of the Vario system. Expanded they are 37" and collapsed they are 32" or so. The Bumot 38L set is 37.5" which is just inside the levers. However, the Globe Scout set up is 35.5". Decisions, decisions. I'm leaning towards the Globe Scout because they are within the overall width of the bike and their scaffolding is removable like the SW Motec setup. I might also get the Vario side panniers with an aluminum top box.
@nickhodgeUK

I agree I really want them within the width of the handlebars as an advantage of a motorcycle is motorway jams with cars and passengers overheating. The luggage system is here (2 weeks before the bike!!) watch this space 👍🏻

Nick, first of all congratulations with your « tough » decision... I am glad you made switched to the GSA. You will see that the GSA will offer you even more independent joy. About the luggage. I do have the original top box from BMW as well as the big 58 liter from Givi. They are interchangable as long as you mount an adaptor plate (only 6 screws). Somehowe I do prefer more the quality from the original BMW site panniers (which I also have on my bike). The 58 liter top box from Givi is really bulky and you can put a lot of stuff in. You can een combine that big GIVI 58 liter top box with the original site panniers van BMW because the site panniers can still open. I was a little afraid it wouldn’t work, but it does. Next to the original alumunium site panniers from BMW, I have the soft panniers from Bumot which indeed fit perfectly on the original BMW racks. These soft panniers are a little small, but I think they’re perfoect when you go more off road. To be honest, I use these soft panniers to practice slow manoevers with that big bike and then I fill them up with empty PET coke bottles. At every site of the bike, they are great cushions in case I drop my (expensive) bike. I am sure you will enjoy your switch. On my previous (F700GS) bike, I had all the paniers from GIVI, which are not bad a all, but for some reason, If ind the quality (especially the racks) from the original BMW better. Ride safe!!
@nickhodgeUK
4 жыл бұрын
Thanks Kim. My head is turning toward Bumot AND 58L Givi. Because I’m greedy. As you say just a small plate change and I would probably only use the 58L on long trips. Ride safe too
@kimvanuytsel8462
4 жыл бұрын
I think that would indeed be a perfect combination. The 58l Givi is really bulky and the Bumot hard case panniers would be ideal to combine with that because they flip open from the inside to the outside of the bike. In this way you won’t hava a problem (or take the risk) that when opening the site cases, you’re touching that big top box. Only (small) downside is that you will have 2 additional different keys to carry.
