I think Pippa's reason for preferring Agricola really strikes at the heart of the matter - that its ultimately futile to try and rank games on a linear scale, as everyone will have a different set of priorities. Even a single person's rating of a single game can vary over time e.g. how recently did you play it or something similar. But carry on, the talking about the rank is the fun bit, not the rank itself,

The best way I've found is tier lists. You have to come at building the list with an explicit purpose and technique. I tend to think, how good it is for a general audience. Can I put this game/movie/anime down and have a good time with a lot of different people? The more niche something is, the lower the tier. But if it's really good for it's niche, it'll be at the top of that tier. That way if you can only get one thing and you want a crowd pleaser, S is the Safe option. Although, if you listen to the commentary, you might pick up on a lower-tier game and it'll fit your niche.
@Duiker36

Stack ranking is always a terrible idea if you actually have to stand behind the ranking in any meaningful sense, yeah. I've been doing a stack ranking of movies I've watched in the past year and it's insane where some stuff ends up because you're really comparing apples to oranges.

@@SocksAndPuppets nahh, every game has material aspects (components) and immaterial aspects (rules). Although chess isn't usually delivered with a rulebook it definitely has a set of rules that makes it chess and not checkers. The material aspect of the game can imply certain things (a knight looks different from a pawn or a rook so probably that has some purpose), but unless the material aspect forces you to use it some way, it doesn't matter if the rules are printed on the piece, they're still immaterial and have to be enforced by the players. In this way you cannot play chess with a checkers set (the checkers do not have enough material differentiation to reasonably chess with them), but there's nothing materially stopping you from playing checkers with chess pieces (although kinging pieces is difficult).

I fell in love with this game in the early 2000s and was thrilled to win the Ra WBC Tournament in 2006. Eighteen long years later, now with the upgraded acrylic tiles available from BGG (highly recommended!), Ra still hits our local gaming table regularly. It’s simple, always different, always fun, and is a perfect game for us to wrap up an evening of gaming after we’ve played whatever “feature game” was chosen (often one of the versions of the Duniverse Imperium series). Ra is an enduring classic, I’ll wager I’ve played this game about 200 times.

Personally, I think people really believe they'd like to "play Ra more often" if they've just had a two or three fun games of it, but it wears thin pretty quick. Also, I would like The Estates more than it I think if it were a little more streamlined and not so punishing. It's a game you can play for an hour and have your score be like Negative Fifty and some people can deal with that sure, however auction games tend to be lighter, more approachable fare but then you bust it out with family and people feel pretty letdown at the end when you're like "yeah, so have negative fifty points...sorry!". Agricola is being done dirty, here.I could play Agricola once a week for the rest of my life. I'd be bored with RA after a month.
@brandonburrow8872
2 ай бұрын
I love RA but it really depends on the group you're playing with. The best games are ones where everyone knows what they're doing and the bidding is really competitive and there's a lot more tough decisions. Then you have bigger highs and lows due to anxious choices and gambles that pay off or blow up in your face. Do I bluff an auction now and hope someone bids and have to buy if nobody takes the bait? Is it worth it for me? etc., Lighthearted play with new players or folks who aren't taking it as seriously is ok, it's fun in a different way but it's not as interesting in the long term. And yeah you're right, Agricola is really getting treated poorly.

@@brandonburrow8872 100%. I've had some great games of RA where everyone is like "Let's run it back right now!" and then I've had games where the tacit agreement was "Let's not play this again for a long long time". Whereas with Agricola, even if I have a bad game of it, I'm always interested to give it another go and try a new approach.

Couple bits here that make me think I’m playing the game wrong. At 16:15 Tom draws the RA tile and then proceeds to draw another tile out the bag and then decide whether he wants the stack. I thought you were supposed to start an auction immediately not draw another one after the RA tile? Then at 16:52 Tom draws the RA tile again moving the boat onto the final space of the track. I also assumed that immediately ends the epic and you cannot bid for that last set of tiles that have been drawn? Obviously it’s a lighter hearted video not a rules explanation but if I’ve been playing these rules wrong I’d love to know.
@MJ12hu

16:15 - only Tom has sun disks at this point, only he could've bid, and chose not to - then advanced the boat, and continued pulling tiles, so it's legal 16:52 - the final space is on the hourglass icon - at this point, the round(epoch) continues, until one more RA tile is drawn
@JCPRuckus
2 ай бұрын
Based on NRB's recent play I believe that you're supposed to discard the tiles if no one bids. I believe that they weren't doing that. I also believe that you're correct about the lack of a final bid... My guess is that these are house rules because tossing tiles feels wasteful.
@lschuab
2 ай бұрын
In the first case: Technically an auction was started, but Tom is the only player that still has an token to bid with, therefore him deciding to pass ends the auction. When an auction is begun by a Ra tile, a bid does not have to be made, and if no bids are made, the tiles remain on the board. Second case: I don't think that he did move into the final space there, but the second to last one. Later on in the video you can see them play this rule correctly: kzitem.info/news/bejne/yqOwzqdrkKuGfoYsi=C1ZyAbxxtDvPC3S7&t=1379

Just a suggestion: Position the games based on how many of the top 100 games you like better than it. So if you like 2 out of the 3 other games better than it, you position it third of 4, regardless of the order of the other games. This way your top 1 game will be a game that has the least number of other games you like better than it. You could even tally this across the hosts, Pip likes 2 games better than Ra, the other 2 of you like 1 game better than Ra, so it has -4 points. Eldorado, maybe each of you likes 1 game better than it, it gets -3. Agricola, maybe Pip doesn't prefer any game over it, and the other 2 of you like 2 games better than it, so it also gets -4 points, it ties with Ra. Galaxy Trucker, you each like 3 games better than it, it has -9 points. To avoid having to re-tally every episode and needing the different members to be there every time, you make a guess based on an imagined top 100: "I think I like 20 games more than Agricola", you then tally those points and then divide by the number of guests on the episode. -(20+30+16) / 3 = -22 The games don't even have to be directly in comparison to each other they can just be vibe checks, however as you go, you'll have more data to go off of (you know more of the games in the list), and at the end you could retally them if you want to finalise the list.
