Jokes on apple if he lives in a right to repair state. They might fight it but they are still legally banned from pulling their usual shit. I live in a right to repair state but I’m half convinced that the state passed the law because farmers here were mad about tractors and the companies making your warranty void or something because you fixed it yourself (which is fair on the farmers part. Those things are expensive and for decades people just fixed them themselves or they would know a guy who could. The company’s still made money off farmers buying parts, but apparently that wasn’t enough)

The only way to change the battery is to send it to Apple with a check for $595. In 8-12 weeks your Apple Watch™ will be returned to you, however the band may be different. And the face. And the inner workings. Unfortunately, this model is no longer available, and our maintenance supplies are limited. For an additional $695, we can retrofit your watch with the latest technology and features. Sadly you took over 48 hours to respond, which exceeds our development update cycle. We have forwarded your outdated technology to our department for 3rd-world philanthropy using your payments to help absorb some of the cost in facilitating this process.
