@@hybridce99 2019 was probably the last time they had a good defense and 2017 was definitely the last time they had a great one, but I was more the talent on the roster then Zimmers coaching. Remember in 2017 they had prime Everson Griffen, Linval Joeseph, Anthony Barr (all were named pro bowlers and a couple arguably deserved All Pro honors) and Harrison Smith playing at his best (named an all pro that year) as well as the best version of Xavier Rhodes who was an undisputed top 3 cornerback that year and arguably the very best (also named an all pro) and that’s all without mentioning the very meaningful contributions of a young Danielle Hunter and Eric Kendrick’s as well as veterans like Brian Robison and Terence Newman. This was a historically good defense but practically any decent coach could’ve made them a top 3 defense and when these players regressed or left the team Zimmer couldn’t do anything to help them play better than the sum of their parts, Zimmers defenses were as good as the talent on them and nothing more, he added nothing as a coach defensively and he actively sabotaged the offensive side of the ball
@hybridce99
Жыл бұрын
@@kurtwagner350 Hmm, I agree and disagree. I do think Zimmer was a very good defensive coach and deserves a lot of credit for the defenses they out together from 14 thru 18. But...and this was pointed out by realistic Randy and I agree...it seems like ever since the 2nd half of the miracle game, when Payton/Brees figured out how to beat Zim's playcalling, he never, ever adjusted. It's like he stuck with his "system" and tendencies, which ultimately was his undoing. Can't last in this business without constantly evolving, and Zim kinda got figured out. I don't think that negates his resume up until that point, however.
@kurtwagner350
Жыл бұрын
@@hybridce99 I will say the there were some impressive defensive games in 14, 15 and 16 and you may be on to something with him not adapting but I still think overall looking at his resume I can’t really say that he was really an elevating factor in many if maybe any of defenses he has coached and for any praise you can give him for being creative, out scheming or supposedly aiding in the development of players you can find just as many if not more counter examples and even if I just say ok he’s a very good defensive coach there’s still the element that as a head coach he has at best been a detriment to the offensive side of the ball and at worst he has a actively stifled his offenses with his narrow view and philosophy. He also just as a leader generally seems to have a very tough love sentiment as a coach which isn’t necessarily bad but some of the stories that came out of that Vikings locker room specifically were terrible and most damning in my mind was Terrence Newman’s comments who was a “Zimmer guy” who had a long-standing relationship with him and was really only with the Vikings during fairly successful years and yet he still said something along the lines of “he led the locker room with fear and intimidation and was always in a bad mood” and he often let his teams get too high or too low heading into big games and coached multiple games where his players actively quit trying wether that was because Zimmer didn’t inspire hope that they could win or his players gave up on him in defiance it’s undeniable. Aside from Deion Sanders I don’t really think anyone he’s coached particularly likes him and many players had a a real problem with him, from some of the comments from former players I wouldn’t be surprised if they played “ding dong the witch is dead” in the TCO performance center halls after he was fired. So as a whole I really don’t think he deserves a great deal of credit and I think he’s just not a coach you would want.

One of the few instances this season where scheme on defense doesn't match the personnel. I don't know what the defense looks on film when they see WRs match up vs Z Smith or even the MLBs in Hicks/Kendricks. Or have seen receivers constantly scheme zone buster looks to consistent success when the back 7 are running quarters variants. Worse part the defense also has the same odd Fangio coaching tree trait of giving up big runs (See Staley, Hurtt/Desai, Joe Barry, Donatell). Doesn't bode well for January matchups potentially vs the Niners or the Cowboys if they slide to their side of the bracket. And especially the Eagles waiting for the potential NFC champ showdown.

That drink makes me think of something awesome which is kind of dying out as a tradition over here in Germany. A rum pot. You take your favorite rum, brown and strong works great. Fill a large vessle to about half and then all over summer you add in the friuts of the season. Keep it closed with a lid when not tinkering with it and as with your concoction, it's opened once the hollidays roll around. Cheers!

Yep, the defense was actually very good today. the 36 points allowed looks bad but it was all offensive and special teams failures that lead to most of the points.

As a Vikings fan, this team has been tremendously fun to watch this year. I've aged 40 years in 17 weeks. But they've been fun. That said, I fully expect them to get blown out when it matters in the playoffs for all of the reasons listed in this video. Defense still wins championships, and teams with strong defenses tend to be more consistent come playoff time.

Watching this is rage fuel, and not because of the Vikings. Instead it’s because the Giants are doing the same thing in every way with their coach, (nearly identical parallel situations) and the video they get is “Daboll saved the giants” and Brett makes his KOC video about the holdover rebuilding aged out defense leftover from the Zimmer era.

In 2011, the Patriots were 31st in yards allowed on defense, and made it to the SB. They were also, as are the Vikings, rated better in defensive points per game than yards per game. So, the Vikings have a chance.

Hi Brett-longtime casual football fan but pretty new viewer here, and I gotta say I love your channel but feel a little out of my depth with some of the technical terminology (especially for coverage schemes). Been picking up some here and there from your videos, but any tips on where I might find a more elementary primer on some of these schemes? Thanks, love the vids and keep ‘em coming!

I haven’t finished the video yet but Lewis Cine and Andrew Booth’s injuries really hurt them. A lot of their best defenders are 30+ too. They might need depth at WR with Thielen getting older as well…

There is no brett kollmann curse. The NFL is scripted like WWE and brett is in the writers room. His timing is too good for any other reasonable explanation.

Love the video and would love to see you breakdown what they do when they have been successful like 2nd half vs colts, first half vs Jets, first half vs saints, second half vs bills. There are times they look great and then go into all the mess you just broke down.

I feel that although quarters coverage in theory is what's best to stop explosive offenses, most teams don't have the personnel to make this scheme work. So they allow to much underneath, just coverage assignments, or aren't able to have an amazing pass rush.

Being a VIKE fan for 52 years? I have known long ago it aint EVER going to happen! Play outdoors to start. The Vikes were done in the early 80's when they went indoors... same time murikan workers and the middle class were done with the gop/Reagan 'trickle down' theory.."As at least half of boomers will retire with nothing'.. And the Vikes have not had that cold weather advantage since.... 1980? Bad for us real Vike fans playing indoors? Worse year for murikan unions and the middle class workers.

Seems like the opposite of that squad in Denver, especially the ability to gut out close wins. Interesting how a strong offense can bail out a bad defense and not the other way around this year

Love your enthusiasm! Would love to get your take on why the Eagles are so successful (top 3) in what seems like a Fangio system. I'm guessing that the Eagles are more diverse scheme-wise, more adaptable in terms of pre-snap checks, and only took one off-season to acquire great players (basically the opposite of the three points you laid out in terms of the Vikings defense). A BIG thing that I noted in my article just now is that the Eagles cover men whereas the Vikings cover grass. That's a HUGE difference, worthy of bold and italics in my article, especially in the age of match-zone coverage. Aside from the Vikings and the Eagles, what do you think of the other Fangio teams: Rams, Chargers, Broncos, Browns, Seahawks, Packers, etc.?

Having two of the best corners in the league helps quite a bit... Eagles can play man on anyone and win their matchups.

The ridiculous roller-coaster that was the Colts game basically confirmed this. The Colts' offense is so bad that the Vikings defense could actually stop it consistently. The Colts got a bunch of defensive TD's and only one on offense, and even when they were getting turnovers and luck pouring in their way, they only got field-goals on offense over and over and over again. That shows how terrible the Colts offense is. The halftime lead should have been over 50. Second half was more of the same - Vikings defense is bad but Colts offense is worse. And once the Vikings offense decided to start scoring for its own team for once, they were able to move the ball and put up enough points to win.
