THE FIRST ever film from Somalia to play at the Cannes Film Festival, ‘The Village Next to Paradise’ played in the Un Certain Regard section (just below Competition at Cannes).
Made by writer-director Mo Harawe in what is his debut film, it focuses on a family living in a village called Paradise, on the Somalia coast.
German-trained, Harawe moved to Austria when he was 18 from Somalia, the film juxtaposes the western media narrative about a failed, and violent state with life in a village there. It is a story about survival and hope through the eyes of father - Marmagrade (Ahmed Ali Farah) and son Cigaal (Saleban) and the father’s sister Araweelo (Anab Ahmed Ibrahim) who is divorced and seeking a fresh start.
