I lined up behind Barry Broun in the 86 Easter Beach Run where Brown came in second at the age of 42.

Bill Rodgers is such a class act! I was leaving my hotel in the early 90's for the starting line of a major 15K. Bill's just waiting for the elevator too.. we start talking.. just the friendiest dude on the earth. Other Running greats i have met are rather conceited! Not Bill!!! (he won the race in 45 mins. and change)

"I started to push against him: push the pace and worry him a bit... then i asked him if he'd liked to tie." Does this NOT make sense to anyone else??

He probably thought it was 48 HOURS, like his 10 mile time.

nope... Olympic rules were very strict back then. You HAD to be an amature to compete in the Olympics. And the Olympics were the dream for most. Plus race purses were chump change compared to these days..

@ap1234512 That's awesome. I might run against Gerry Lindgren in a 3 miler in late March.

@knightsxc06 I agree, Rodgers was set to win. When Shorter realized that he himself couldn't win, then he accepted the tie. But If you're Rodgers why not go for a course record? Whatever, it was the 1970s and they were hippies.

I would hardly call, "So you wanna tie Frank"? an "epic battle".

This is a funny concept. I would never tie.

Didn't Rodgers, as he became more famous, exchange his plain-looking first wife for a trophy wife? I never liked him much after that. I could be wrong, though.

They were already separated when he met his second wife Gail, who was a runner herself. I should know, she's my mom.

Hold hands and join in peaceful Zen.Yea,thats what world class runners should do .This isn't Haight/Ashbury-they both needed a good kick in the shins.Maybe a doobie and a group hug from the commune.
