@AnthonyL0401 Yes, I am sure he is proud. I am proud of my ancestor who bought the indentured blacks in 1619. You might not know, but the pirates did them a favor. They were headed to some port in the Caribbean, to work on, more than likely, a sugar cane plantation. That was a horrible fate. In Virginia they worked for 7 years and were freed and given land. Even if they were actually chattel slaves, who sold them first, who went out and captured them for profit? Other black people, that's who. By the way, don't look to close at your ancestors, you may find that they owned slaves, or even worse.

A very good presentation; I would like to offer a few points for appendment. 1. In 1571 Spanish missionaries, in a settlement on the nearby York River, were killed by natives, leading to a reprisal raid by the Spanish. The story of Don Luis is fascinating and may have influenced events in the later English colony. If Don Luis is Opechancanough, that would explain Smith’s capture and the Massacre of 1622. 2. Before the settlers arrived at Jamestown, they were warned by other Virginia natives to avoid the Powhatans. 3. The settlers who accompanied John Smith when he was captured were horribly tortured and killed. Smith heard their screams; he was fearful for his life. Killing settlers as a precursor for welcoming another seems to be contradictory ritual. 4. John Smith ended the communal sharing of goods, essentially telling the settlers that if they didn’t work and they wouldn’t eat. 5. Pocahontas was lured onboard the English ship by natives in return for a copper kettle and trinkets. 6. Slavery did exist in Virginia before 1619. Natives enslaved other natives and later captured Europeans. 7. The 1619 thanksgiving at Berkeley should be mentioned as well as the first English institute of higher learning in America, the college at Henricus for English and native students, which was destroyed during the 1622 Massacre. 8. Aside from the English killed in 1622, many women were captured. Jamestown was saved by a native boy. 9. Some natives and Africans became successful planters with indentured servants and slaves. Anthony Johnson, born in Angola and started life in Virginia as an indentured servant, had four European servants and an African slave. 10. Around 6,000 settlers arrived in Virginia during the first 17 years. In 1624 there were about 1,200 remaining.

The X is right across the bay from where Jamestown was actually settled on the Map. Where it is on the map on the Video was actually where a Powhatan village was. The real Jamestown was located on the bottom right of the curve above the X. That way then if the Spanish ships entered the James River on the V shaped bend further down going towards the Atlantic Ocean, their cannons were trained on that bent as they could exploit the terrain and could fire at any Spanish ships and the ships would not be able to fire back as essential the front on the ship would be directly facing the cannons. However I'm nit-picking. Loved the video.

The kind of book he wrote was for glory, not historical accuracy. The Pocahontas story only appears in his second narrative of Virginia (it's completely omitted from the first), some of which was probably written to serve as an introduction of Pocahontas to the Queen, as she was on her way to England and became something of a celebrity. This doesn't mean the event didn't happen, of course, but combined with his tendency to write about beautiful females saving him all over the world, it does suggest there is probably embellishment or at most a penchant for liking to describe himself as an adventurer who gorgeous princesses like to save :P

My understanding is that the Spanish colonies were settled a century earlier, and were thus feudal in nature; wealth was seen as something that you inherited or you stole. Colonial Mexico was far richer than English North America, but much of the population were peons who owned no land. Most of the mineral wealth was shipped off to Spain. With its slave economy, the American South had a good deal in common with colonial Latin America and the Caribbean.

@@NetanyahooWarCriminal We don't have to invent things. That picture of Raleigh is fake because he was a man of color too. Black Jacobites. I keep seeing wp say these are their ancestors; however, these are all of my family names as well. Ex. Hayes, Looney, Smith, Reid, Allen, etc. So, apparently we have more work to do or true history to dig up. 🙈🙊🙉

You'll need a lot more than THAT KZitem comment to convince me. By the way -- the STRENGTH of any KZitem comment, is directly proportional to the TRUTH it contains, and inversely proportional to any untruths within it. This lesson is free.

My 14th generation back grandfather came to Jamestown in 1610. And yes, the blacks from the 1619 controversy were indented. They were freed after their period of service. I am a little surprised that his name wasn't mentioned. He was involved in 2 key events in the history of Jamestown. I was pleased that the subject was presented in a rather neutral manner. Most presentations portray the settlers as murderous land thieves, and the Indians as noble and peaceful. On the subject of land thieves, I come from a long line. My line originated in Denmark (Vikings) who went to the coast of France (Normandy from North Men). They took over that land, so the King of France made the decision to give it to them. It was better than fighting them, and they served as a buffer against further invasions. Later on William the Conqueror aka William the Bastard (a Norman) invaded England an took the throne. People don't steal land, they win it in battle.

Of course people steal, murder and rob for land and other resources. What makes the conquest of America so damning is the hypocrisy.

So, who was he and what were the two key events in which he was involved?

Some of the black indentures were taken from Scotland and Ireland. Even some English blacks were taken there and also before 1619. Let me repeat that. The British indentures were native British blacks.

So many references made,"we think","something like that", causes one to think you really have no idea about most of what you're talking about

its because of the poor records of the time. There are not enough credible sources providing primary evidence of life on that coastal verge 400 years ago to the point where we can be certain about everything, therefore most hisorians have to “think” about what roughly happened by piecing together lacklustre sources.

There is no way to know 100% what the details are for much of this part of history but we have some records of broad facts. Its common sense that we have to use different facts, known culture, historicsl events and such to rebuild missing parts of the story. Thats why a historian might say, " we think". If a historian says that they KNOW everything about any subject they are a liar and do not listen to them.

Hello! I hate to bother you but I'd like to trouble you for some advice. I'm currently researching my 5th Great Grandfather James Johnston 1662 - 1746 Isle of Wight, Colonial Virginia. I share this ancestor with President Lyndon Baines Johnson. This presidential library and I have the same problem, we suspect James's father was from Scotland but we can't find the evidence. Are there any researches you could recommend that I look at to try and answer this question? I suspect this father was an Edmund Johnston recruited by, I believe, Francis Mason. I suspect he sailed from London in 1838 and landed in James City in 1639. Any advice you could give me would be appreciated and I'd give you the credit when I presented the information to the LBJ library. Thanks in advance for your attention.
