This is such an amazing build. The physical quality of your enclosure, the attention to detail and authenticity of your LCARS animations, the sounds. Everything you've done here represents such a high bar for a Tricorder build. The final result is a piece that feels completely genuine. It legitimately looks like it fits in the canon of the show, maybe even more than Sternbachs concept drawing did? I love your coverage of developing the stream graph for your subspace survey animation. It is incredibly useful to me as I am trying to make a screen for my own Tric featuring that visualization. This video is so incredibly informative and inspiring. For all of us making our own Tricorders it really is an incredible gift and so neighborly to show us your process. Thanks so much for sharing your build with us in so much detail. 🖖

First and foremost. I love watching maker videos, but this. I have been a Star Trek fan since I was 12 years old. I am now 60. To say I love Star Trek is an understatement!!!!! I join the Navy in my early 20's because it was the closest organization to Starfleet. I even got to tour to real U.S.S. Enterprise when I was station in the bay area in 85. I will never forget it!!!!! Now seeing this (prompt) tricoder come together, I think were coming a bit closer to getting a real one made. Mangy_Dog 🖖🖖🖖🖖🖖🖖🖖🖖🖖 in the highest level possible. I have no doubt you would be the head engineer on a Starfleet starship.

The work around for the PWM controller and the 5 volt regulator are component level repair and design at its finest. Most solutions are solved through mental horse power. But occasionally a lucky mistake does the trick.
@aserta

One solution for the buttons would be to ditch the concept altogether and adopt the old school NASA style. IE, make the buttons level, as you said, but don't put decals on top, rather put a clear plastic lens (thin, potentially blow molded into the shape of the holes using a mold of the face) and inside it, and over the sensor, put the decal. In theory, if you make a thin enough lens, and you achieve a good transparency on it (from my own stuff, i recommend actually polishing it after the process of molding) then you can actually have printed water transfers and do it on the inside. This would give you a timeless button. Source: way back in the day, i helped a friend design a phone (corded) and the design had this very conundrum, how to put long lasting touch based buttons in a cheap and easy to make form. So we went with water transfers first, which later evolved into print transfers in a factory format. just my 2 cents.

making the buttons level is one option im considering. But that also brings in new problems in regards to the cap buttons and leds.

Seriously impressive work. You should find a way to create a carbon fiber or metal case that can be printed. @MD_Builds

Im rather against wireless charging. If i remember correctly it has an efficiency < 50% so its a huge waste of power. But it wouldnt be tooooooo difficult to adapt a QI charger into the cassis.

I know the last thing you want is to change microcontrollers and such again, but if you're hitting limits with that display chip you should check out the PIC32MZ DA series of chips from Microchip. They have a lot of RAM and a built in display processor and the CPU is more powerful than the STM chip you showed

Im really not keen on saying prices in a public space. But its a very limited run, and the prices take into account all the RnD time and as well as the time it takes to build them... In all honestly I still get well bellow minimum wage. For all the effort but the price will still seem high to most people. But I feel the price i set is reasonable. Just not cheap...
