Here is my take. The PPK/PPK/S series are like the 1911 and BHP’s. Are they older designs ? Yep. Do they still work as advertised . Yep. I don’t discount a 1911 or a BHP simply because its older and doesn’t have glock like features. Mister Lucky Gunner shoots a modified .357 revolver (Previous videos). Surely a man who retro carries a 6 shot revolver could cut a 7 shot auto-loader a little slack ? If you like it, carry it. Lucky Gunner does.

The PPK/S is the only firearm I own, purchased for $650 in 2019. Essentially all complaints are valid. I have a scar on the web of my hand from the beaver tail and it's prone to fail to feed if don't rack the slide like a man, but apart from that is quite reliable. The sights aren't bad considering the age of the design and it's very easy to be accurate with, even out to 25 to 50 yards. I particularly like the DA/SA trigger while shooting and for safety. The DA is heavy but smooth. You can pull it when you really want to but you aren't likely to do so accidentally, a plus for CC with a round in the chamber. The SA is very crisp to say the least. Ultimately, the historical value and its niche as a subcompact DA/SA pistol is why it's worth owning.

My first experience with a Walther was firing a friends war trophy. It fit my hand perfectly and hit where I pointed it. I purchased one at a gun show shortly afterward with the same results. The only drawback was/is the availability of 32 ammunition. Even though I reload 32 cartridges, it limited my plinking . Moving up to the 380 PPK/S was good for me. It tolerates different manufacturers of 380 ammo very well and the “heft” of the pistol gives it a feel of control even though it’s a more powerful round. So if your small or don’t have gorilla hands you might give it a try. Every person should try multiple types to find the firearm that is overall comfortable for you.

@@chrisa.515 But the comment didn't say anything about the DA/SA so that's not what I was talking about. Is a pre-cocked striker handgun inherently less safe? Yes. That is indeed a fact. If you want that to be your fact, I'll agree. If your "fact" is that someone who can't be trusted to know where their finger is can be trusted to know the condition of their safety lever... that's not a fact, that optimism. Again, let me make it clear. Is a Glock trigger inherently easier to actuate by accident? Yes. Is someone with unsafe weapon handling technique less likely to have an accidental discharge by adding gizmos to the weapon? No. I don't trust that person and in fact the safety could give that person a false sense of security. So in the end I'm worried about the person rather than the gun.

Grew up with the Bond films, so I had been interested in the PPK, but since getting into firearms I moved away from it. Got a Bersa Thunder 22 simply for the aesthetic, but carry a Kahr CM9 when going small. As for Bond, he used a PPK in .32 and this was after a fan complained about Flemming's original choice of a .25 Beretta. Apparently, Flemming himself was issued a Browning in .25 when he served, so he naturally wrote it into his novels as well. Although rarely mentioned, Bond apparently kept a long slide .45 1911 in his car; therefore being the mindset of the .32 on you is better than the .45 in your glove box 🤣

The one always in my pocket is the PPK. It fits perfectly, works great and hits exactly where I point it. My next choice is the Blackhawk (I can't seem to miss with it and the .357 might be old but it still packs a hell of a punch). I also own a Gyrojet but have never fired it. Gun collecting runs in my family and the current crop of cousins are all girls (bless em) whose interests lie elsewhere. When I die some wonderful old weapons are going to hit the market. The long gun collection is much more extensive. There's something just "right" about the PPK that is hard to define but very real.

I'll say this regarding the 1911: While it is a substantially older gun than even the PPK, it has A- Better ergonomics, and B- more options for customization. 1911's can have their sights changed, for example, at least in newer examples. If the PPK were to come with replaceable sights, that'd be an entire complaint taken out of the video. And I haven't heard of many people getting slide-bite from a 1911, either. It also has a slide release lever, which the PPK lacks. It has a range of features that are updateable, and I think that if the PPK had a similar range of updateable features that could be capitalized on in the factory, he may not have even felt the need to make this video, or at least not as strong of a need.

As much as I love this channel, this is perhaps the dumbest anti-PPK video I've ever come across. I shoot the PPK better than any other compact out there, including the Glock 42. PPK's got much better ergonomics than the G42. I once shot a friend's G42 and I could barely shoot it straight. The ergonomics were just lousy. But I shot the .380 PPK in single action mode much better. It fit my hands much better, I noticed the felt recoil of the .380 out of the PPK was also less than out of the Glock 42. The heavier weight helped with that. Out of the G42, I could feel the recoil quite a bit against the middle of my palm. Nothing painful though. I personally prefer heavier steel handguns over the polymers for the reduced felt recoil. Just suits my small thin hands better. Would I recommend the PPK for personal defense? Absolutely, though not as a novice gun because of the double action trigger pull on the first shot which takes more training to get proficient at.

I many years ago, bought a little gun, that at first glance I was certain was a ppk. It had a slide lock, fixed sights, was chambered in .380 ... solid steel ... comfortable, small, a rugged firearm, that was listed new at $180 US. It was made by Bersa, from Argentina (I actually bought it months before the Falkland skirmish.) The company moved on, still building a small .380 that has some similarities to the ppk .... but not like the Bersa model 97. Over the years I have fired probably only about 1300 rounds through it ... have had maybe a dozen failure to eject issues ... and until recently it wasn't getting the best care. (Someone told me that beyond water as being an enemy, dirt was only an enemy of firearms in conjunction with oil ... so minimal MINIMAL oil should be used, and I followed that plan faithfully.) It isn't a PPK, it's more or less a clone. Same look, fixed barrel, but been a great firearm, that I am extremely happy I purchased.

The G42 is nicer to shoot, but I prefer to carry the PPK as the heavy DA trigger pull and external hammer you ride with your thumb when holstering/unholstering it vastly reduces the chances of an AD. I also prefer the mag release that is near impossible to accidentally activate. It is a vastly better impact weapon than any polymer frame pistol, while the extra weight (about the same as the S&W M60) helps keep it in a holster and allows me to feel it as a walk so I don't keep patting it to see if it's still there. It just needs to have the offending sharp edges removed by a gunsmith if you don't want to use gloves when doing a lot of shooting at a gun range.

Try concealed carrying something larger in Florida during the summer. I've tried, it does not work well. Also, the PPK is a lot safer than many other designs since it does not have to be carried cocked, has a decocker, and has a manual safety, can be quickly fired if that is necessary using the double action mode and can be shot very accurately in single action mode.

I think you overlook that fact that not everyone has the same hands or the same needs. I have a friend that originally bought a Ruger LCP based on all the glowing reviews it received and absolutely hated it. He constantly hit his thumb with his finger when trying to fire it, resulting in the gun not firing when it needed to. This was because the trigger was too long a pull and the shape of his hands didn't work with the pistol. He also tried that Glock. He hated the trigger, hated the sights, hated the grip, and it did not shoot well for him. He tried a PPK and fell in love with it. It fit his hands, he shoots it VERY accurately, and has no problems with it. It's now his go-to carry gun. James Bond had nothing to do with it. I would say the PPK is not horrible for him. YMMV.

The PPK/S was my first pistol. Since then I've cycled between the P99C, Beretta 85, Beretta 92/96, a full size 1911, and have come full circle back to the more traditional PPK in 380. Just bought it last week, actually. Having carried a polymer pistol (P99C) for maanny years, I have to say that I prefer my Beretta 85 and PPK much much more. Firstly, yes polymer pistols are lighter, but they have more recoil. In particular, they have a specific type of recoil called "pop-up", which means they're top heavy -- there's not though weight in the handle to offset the rise of the barrel. As someone who activity trains and shoots these side by side, it was noticable enough for me to switch back to an all steel gun. I like my Beretta 85 over my PPK for the better sights, but my PPK is more compact, and realistically you should learn how to shoot from your natural grip anyway, so you are equally reliable in either scenario. Chances are you're not going to have time to aim -- and even if you do your nerves are going to be so frazzled that you'll likely screw it up anyway.

I’ve carried my PPK/S .380 every day for over a year, on a 12 o’clock holster, with a spare mag in my left pocket. Thankfully never had to use it. I also have a PPS/S .22 I use for draw training which is also a very awesome gun (When loaded with CCI mini mags). The PPK is heavy, I’ll give it that, and I can definitely feel it on my belt. I have also carried a Glock 26 in the 12 position, and the PPK sits much more comfortably with less printing and weight, but with 3 less rounds. By far the most comfortable gun I have is the Ruger LCP .380, slips into a pocket no problem, but is so tiny it’s hard to draw and get a good grip on. It’s not modern, it’s not the lightest, it doesn’t carry the most shots, but I’ll keep carrying my PPK.

I carry the 2010 S&W version PPK, reload for it & have countless # of rounds thru it with years of experience. I will agree on the weight & fixed sights. While you were bashing the blow back design & felt recoil to bad you failed to even mention accuracy with that barrel design over tilt barrels. Comparing it to a Glock was funny, PPK being a very good looking gun compared to one of the most ugly guns available.

You're shooting it wrong- thumb down to avoid slide bite. You can't just grab it like some random, clumsy 1911; the PPK/S is an elegant weapon from a more civilized age.

Yeah I have to disagree. Is it a modern pistol with all the bells and whistles that comes with that? No. Are those bells and whistles really important? No. Not at all. The only people that praise modern pistols up to heaven and back are industry shills that want to sheer you by continuously selling you "the latest and greatest". There is only one essential quality a carry gun must excel at and that is reliability. The PPK has that covered. Everything else is personal preference. You like a lightweight gun? Great but it's snappy. You like it in a big caliber? Ok but then it's big and bulky. Don't get me wrong, modern pistols are better. Well maybe not better but more diverse and therefore better suited for each one's individual preference. But if your preference happens to be a small gun that's got some weight to mitigate recoil and you rather have a slim grip then a large capacity magazine then the PPK is definitely one of your premier options. You can argue other guns with similar characteristics are "better" but again, it's a subjective opinion. For example I've yet to come upon a argument why striker fired guns are better than hammer fired ones in a substantial way. Consistency of pull? Sure but on the other hand striker fired triggers are mushy and kinda crap, even the best ones aren't on the level of a 1911. So you sacrifice trigger quality for consistency, it's a matter of preference. P.S. I don't carry a PPK. I carry a P365. But I wouldn't raise hell if I had to carry one, it would be slightly sub-optimal for my preferences but I can easily live with that. I would however raise hell if I had to carry a crap gun with known reliability issues. That's the only line I draw.

“The ‘only’ people who praise modern pistols up to heaven and back are industry shills …” Credibility: forfeited because this is an incredulous statement that somehow manages to ignore a century of innovation in design and materials. The Springfield 1903 was reliable too, but … never mind. 🤦♂️

@@millibarman I would have no qualms trusting my life to a 1911 which is a more than a century old design and many, many people do. No one has ever died because his gun wasn't made of polymer and his barrel didn't have polygonal rifling. All these innovations you speak of are quality of life improvements not life saving revolutionary new features. A heavy hammer fired steel gun is just as effective in self defense as any modern ultra light, super compact, tactical to the gills wonder pistol. You don't NEED any of these modern innovations. They're nice to have but they won't make a difference between life and death. If someone likes the PPK and wants to carry one because it's cool or whatever, it's absolutely fine. In fact it's what you should do, buying a gun you don't like is a bad idea, you'll leave it home because it doesn't look good with your fancy suit and then you won't have it when you need it.

If it reliably goes bang when you pull the trigger, the caliber has decent power, and you train with it, the other stuff really doesn't matter much. It's just all opinion and personal preference. I personally think carrying any subcompact in most situations is less than desirable.

I love the PPK, is it old? Yes. Is it heavy? Yes. But it doesn't jam like the Glock 42, the LCP and the Bersa Thunder. It's one of the few small .380 pistols that I can shoot the lights out. The ergonomics for it fit my hand really well too. Appreciate you sharing your opinion on this gun. I do agree it needs some modernization and could use a aluminum alloy frame with night sites and a lighter double action trigger pull.
