This and Little House on the Prairie were a couple of the only shows my late father and I would watch together. I always felt this was the best opening since it showed a lovely family moment. Shows like this would never last, society has changed much to radically.

We watched "The Waltons" every Thursday night at 8:00 growing up. Mom always connected with Elizabeth, dad connected with Jim-Bob; I don't know who my siblings connected with the most, but I connected most with Ike Godsey; I loved the enthusiasm Joe Conley had for the show.

The Waltons was set in the days of The Great Depression of the 1930s. With today's rising unemployment and economic conditions, I can't help think how things have come full-circle. This show reminds me that when things are at their worst, people can be at their best. The material stuff doesn't really matter all that much. It comes down to love of family and friends. Timeless values were the foundation of this show.

The Waltons is my 2nd favorite show I watch it all the time. When I'm sick I watch it or The Dukes of Hazzard my favorite show. When you watch and like a show so much its almost like its your family. I'm 22 years old now but I have been watching these shows since I was small its nice to see that I'm not the only young person who likes older shows.

The theme music just brings me back to a more innocent World in the early 70's where I grew up just like the Walton's Mountains no drugs Little or no crime & people had so much time for one another we could relate to the world the Walton's grew up in . We have now lost so so much of our Values.

I think this show is absolutely charming. I love that they were bringing home a RADIO. Think of all the things they didn't have in the 1930s. My parents and grandparents lived through it. Oh, and the Theme Song was written by Jerry Goldsmith, of Star Trek fame

I used to watch the Waltons with my grandparents when it first aired. They loved it, I think, partially, because they were married and raising children around the same timeframe depicted on the show. (They would have been around the same ages as John and Olivia.) They've been gone or decades now, but when I watch "The Waltons" in reruns, it reminds me of them.

I was raised in Colombia, South America. I am 42 years old. Americans will never understand the influence (social) you transmitted with this show to a whole generation of latin Americans: decency, honesty, hard work... One of the reasons I live in America today is because I learned to love this country and what it stands for thru the values portrayed in tv series like The Waltons and The Little House on the Prairie. Viva AMERICA!

It was written in Bill Cosby's memoir "Hey Hey Hey" that he auditioned for a small part on The Waltons circa 1975. Ellen Corby was to have said "what is his kind doing on this set" and "hey boy fetch me a glass of mash". Dr. Cosby was so affected by this that he vowed to become rich enough to buy the entire Walton set just to burn it down. In response one you are reading what has been posted on the Internet. @hubciti The Waltons extended hospitality to and welcomed into their home all sorts of folks, of differing ages, interests, and backgrounds. That is part of the greatness of the show. A major part of America's greatness has been the ability to incorporate and assimilate people from all over the earth. Too bad you can't see that. Don't let the door hit your butt on the way out.

@SwaGgAXXL The regular series started broadcasting in 1972. There was a movie in the early 1960s called Spencer's Mountain that was based on Earl Hamner's book by the same name. But what really led to getting the series going was the success of a CBS tv movie called "The Homecoming" that was also based on Earl Hamner's boyhood and his novella.

The Waltons were based upon the Hamner family. Earl Hamner is the guy who created this show. However, in the western part of Virginia, where this show is set, there are many Scots-Irish families who came over here prior to what you call the "American War of Independence", and what we call the "Revolutionary War". I trace part of my ancestry to a Scots-Irish man who came to Virginia in 1638, but his family made it to Georgia, then Kentucky, then Missouri and finally here to Pennsylvania.

The Waltons are based on author/narrator Earl Hamner's real family, who came from Virginia. In parts of western Virginia, people pronounce "out" as "oat", just like many Canadians do. If you get to watch the show sometime, Hamner uses that very inflection in his opening narration, such as "Oat on Walton's Mountain..."
