One of my favorite part of the wandering inn is that once you realize that every story that’s told will eventually have impact on the main story they become that much more enjoyable

If the long-arcing nature of the story was bugging you a tiny bit, look forward to the next 3. Rains, Blood, and Tears of Liscor all act as their own arcs and line up neatly into roughly equal segments, while also building to the Volume 5 climax. Excellent pacing, IMO. Best audiobooks by far.

This book has that in spades, more so than any other series I've ever read. As Matt mentioned in the video, the writing quality isn't amazing at the start (though the rewrite of the first book helped, available currently via the online publication, not the ebook). However, it does get progressively better and when it starts really dilivering it just doesn't stop

Thanks for the spoiler section! I started TWI a couple months ago after watching your review and am now nearly caught up halfway through volume 9. I can confidently say it keeps getting better and I think you hit the nail on the head when you pointed out that the slower slice of life chapters are really necessary for the big gut punches to have the impact they do. This becomes a recurring format for the series and it is so satisfying. Personally I would love even longer spoiler sections with more plot and character discussion as we get deeper in. Thank you!

I'm really enjoying your reactions to the events and I think that the spoiler section could probably be 95% of teh videos going forward. I've been reading the wandering inn almost solidly for maybe 2 years now and only only books that I can bear to break from are new Ascendance of a Bookworm novels (highly recommended it's an incredible series, very similar storytelling style to the wandering inn but laser focused on a single POV character) I am catching up. I am already into volume 9 and an can already feel the creeping dread of 'what will i do when there is no more Wandering Inn?' That is going to be the worst of all book-hangovers.

Already had a debate ready to listen for when I hit the bed, when suddenly on my front page I spy something in the corner of my eye, oh hot damn, Matt's already got another TWI video out! I really loved the spoiler section of your video, it made me feel included, and therefor I'll join in on it abit! Spoilers from book #6: . . . . . . . . . . I agree with the Magnolia thing, I'm not sure it was at this point it really started for me, but at some point around here, or maybe abit before here, she become something else entirely for me, which was a great feeling.. While I'm sure some will disagree, Magnolia for me was an Antagonist for me(because she was an antagonist to our main povs) early on and that graduely changed as we came to know her more and more, at some point I came to realize that the big picture I thought I had as someone with several points of view was incredibly small compared to the bigger picture Magnolia is always looking at. This "evolution" was a joy to follow. I also had a bit of a problem with the different povs at times, but I've come to the conclusion that it's because Aba sometimes does the same I feel Gwynne does, change pov in a situation where I'd rather continue in other povs(which instead of catching momentum, let's it slow down). Because after going back at rereading some of the povs I liked less, I find them a lot more enjoyable. Thanks for the video Matt! The readers currently caught up are right now waiting for Aba to end a small break they are on, after which they'll start one of the biggest(if not the biggest) event we've had so far in TWI, so it was really nice revisiting the world like this right now :)

Matt, thank you for introducing me to this story, I have enjoyed every audiobook. Suggestion for future spoiler sections: Maybe on the left side of the frame have a graphic that stays up the whole time so that if someone is scrubbing through the timeline can see if they are in a spoiler section or not. The first thing that jumped to mind was a vertical red bar with spoiler, also vertical, in white letters. I'm sure you are more creative than I am and can come up with something even better than that.

As you said in your spoiler-talk, this really feels as the (first) time multiple seperate story threads get connected and you start to see a bigger part of the picture the story wants to paint. I really enjoyed your spoiler-talk and I think 6 Books in this was probably a good idea. I think the death of important characters is far more impactful, if it does not happen so often and Wandering Inn handles it exceptionally well in the fallout of the events in the next book(s)(while I certainly felt the Ned Stark death in SoIaF for example, as the series went on I kinda numbed to the idea and it lost its appeal to me).

It was at this point in my reading where I abandoned all my expectations for the story. I stopped trying to guess where the story was going and just read. Trying to make this fit into traditional story telling doesn't work because Pirate is bad at foreshadowing or so good at it, I don't know. By the time something becomes relevant, you forgot it was introduced. I wasn't emotionally invested in the characters you mentioned but I enjoyed their story. The number of characters you still have to be introduced to is more than the characters you've already met. And they all live in my head! How can I be so invested in the lives of these fictional characters. Not just their triumphs and tragedy but their day-to-day lives. I hope you enjoy the rest of the Goblin Lord arc.

I disagree with the plot armor label. Plot armor is specifically about characters surviving when they shouldn't--when the story fails to explain why a character lives in a given circumstance. Living, in and off itself, is not problematic no matter what the struggle save in that it can create problematic pacing. But that's not plot armor.

I've read the first two audiobooks of the series, and liked the core story. So far I found the peripheral stories a bit of a distraction. Given what I know about the author's writing practice, they feel to me like the author gets to a point and can't/doesn't want to write on the core story at that time, so writes something else in the world instead. For a web serial, I think that's mostly fine, though even there, I find it a bit frustrating, but I think it works significantly less well in book (or "book") form. I'm still enjoying the series, but I'm not _loving_ the series. Which is to say that I'll still pick up books when the impulse strikes, but I'm not going to binge in the way that I do with some other series.
@Devon297

I know I skip certain side character chapters, especially earlier on which is about where you are. But I've also found that somehow that character will get a hook into you and you start to care more and then the side chapters are almost as good as the core story. I no longer feel like the side chapters are just core story fatigue, the author has gotten better and better about it. But they also do a poll once a month I believe and the patreon supporters get to pick a storyline/character to get a chapter on.
