From what I understand, the original invitation to join the Blacklist album went to Alessia Cara because she was a well known singer. Unfortunately, she was more familiar with things in the pop world and did not know how to proceed with a Metallica song. She shared an international promotion team with The Warning, who knew that they had a history with covering Enter Sandman. However, they had to go back to Metallica to get permission to bring The Warning into the project. Dany, Pau, and Ale were thrilled to take this on, but by this time they only had about ten days left to rework the song, record it, and master it. The guy you saw in the first video was the producer, Matt Squire, who came down to Mexico to help out. Alessia was stuck in Canada during the pandemic, so Matt brought her part in on his computer.

Yes, there were stiff restrictions on travel into and out of Canada, especially by air, when this was put together, but the workaround was brilliant, and in a short time period as well! It is only fitting that it was chosen to be the opening track on the Blacklist album.

The Warning knocked it out of the park with their complete reimagined version of Enter Sandman. But it would have never been made had it not been for Alessia Cara. She was the Grammy winning Best New Artist that Metallica asked to contribute to the Blacklist album.

True. But she’s also the least essential part in the production. This version is better without her. It’s a rock song, the pop singing is like vanilla sauce on a chili.

Alessia played live with The Warning once that I know of, at The Troubadour in West Hollywood, CA. She pranced around the stage like the pop star she is. To me, it was out of the song's character. I like the video with her projection on the wall of the old mill, and the harmonies on parts of it. But I agree, Pau could do her parts, and the arrangement is really tailored to The Warning. It is an absolutely masterful rearrangement of the original. I've seen reactors cry on cue when watching either the OMV or the Teatro Met performance. I hope they eventually release the symphonic version from their 10th anniversary show.

Good point about how the girls pay attention to each other and don't typically talk over each other. I think it's yet another sign that at it's core, The Warning is DPA vs the world, with support from parents and team, but its core is DPA. And they are certainly "fierce lionesses"!!
@davejohnston2197

That's all practiced for the most part. In a more personal setting, they talk over each other, they argue, they'll tell each other to hold up...they act like sisters. Ale and Pau will go head to head, and you can tell Ale takes zero crap. Both Pau and Dany will defer to her on items because she has a mind like a steel trap. Pau doesn't hold back on her feelings. She's very blunt (that's the nice way to say it). She knows how to use expletives effectively (considering how some people think they are saints, it's refreshing, honestly). Dany is usually the hugger to make sure everyone stays in a good frame of mind. That's how they work well together. Three very distinct personalities that compliment each other, but don't hold back either. The greatest thing they have is they know each other's limits, and respect those.

I actually like both versions equally, if that's even possible. The studio version with Alessia Cara is hauntingly beautiful in a "bone-chilling" sort of way (it gives me the creeps. Lol), and the live version with just The Warning is hauntingly beautiful in a more "aggressive" manner. Both versions, though, actually take you INTO that bad dream that Metallica only talked about. This is the calmest and most concentrated you'll see Pau on drums. You don't have to destroy the drum kit to make rock music!😂And the stillest you'll see Ale. And Dany not making her stank faces😅. The guy wearing the grasses and grey hoodie is Matt Squire, who produced the song. He re.otely took over control of Alessia's computer when she recorded her vocal parts. Matt had a prior commitment and couldn't mix the song, so they sent the demo to David Bendeth in New Jersey to mix it. They arranged, recorded, mixed, and submitted the song to the Metallica Blacklist team in 10 days.

For those who downplay Alessia Cara's contribution to this song: Inspiration can arrive from unexpected directions. Would The Warning even re-visit Enter Sandman without this special set of circumstances? The challenge here was to re-make an iconic song with an artist from a different genre of music. And together they came up with possibly the most successful effort on The Metallica Blacklist project. I think that says a lot about the talent and artistry of the participants. Whatever you think about her style Alessia is a talented successful artist. Alessia's presence was essential precisely because The Warning had to accommodate her vocals. This was a collaboration, not a competition. And without Alessia Cara this version of Enter Sandman would not exist.

Behind the scene videos are great, as it shows how serious they take their job and still put in a lot of fun. Poor you - get a toddy to better the situation - not too many then something else happens. I once - back in 79 - had a terrible cold, and one of my comrades said "I can cure that" and handed me a drink and told me to take it in one shot. I did - and hopped around for several minutes recovering from a shot of 80% Rum - but bacterias were killed. If I had known the burning down my throat I wouldn't have done that - so beware Don't.
