I absolutely hate the re-release of the film with those comic book additions. It totally kills the pacing of the movie and takes out some great spoken lines and replaces them with visual lines. Interesting note, a few years after that version was released I attended a convention in NJ where a majority of the cast from The Warriors attended and I asked a few of them what they thought and they agreed the new version was inferior. What are your feelings on the original novel by Sol Yurick? I thought it had some good qualities in terms of social commentary, felt a bit more like Clockwork Orange. However comparing the two... love the movie so much more.

I viewed The Warriors 8 or 9 times when it was released. Big theater, little theater or drive-in... the crowd was always vocal and engaged. I love DVD's and DVD extras - but some movies cry to be seen in a crowd. There's nothing that compares to when a few hundred people would go apesh*t at the drive-in when Ajax decided to turn and fight the Baseball Furies. You can't get that rush sitting on a couch.

In that same scene where Swan throws the bat at the cop it accidentally hit Deborah (Mercy) in the face and she was rushed to the hospital at 3am for stitches and still has a scar to this day. I read the novel many years ago (I also have some of the chapters of the Anabasis in Greek). I can speculate on why they use the comic book frames. If I remember correctly, the novel mentions one of the gang members reading a comic book about the Greek soldiers fighting the Persians as they try to get home. So the comic book frames could be a homage to the novel. Also, the scene where Ajax gets in trouble with the woman cop is different in the novel. She is attacked by some of the gang but they discover to their surprise that she is a strong, hefty woman that really puts up a fight. Overall, this is a case where the movie is as good as the novel despite the differences. Usually I opt for the novel over the movie, but not in this case.

"The Junior" was the one who had the comic book and they gave it to him so he wouldn't get bored, he was 11. The oldest of any of the gang members mentioned were 16 or 17 and that was Ismael (Cyrus in the Movie). The part with the lady they were having sex with her and it turned violent when they tried to open up her purse and still money from it. Yeah, I don't think this movie could have worked with under age preteens and teens.

The cop that was hit in the shins, as well as the actors portraying Ajax and Luther, were also in 48 Hrs., another Walter Hill Classic. I remember when The Warriors came out many theatres refused to show it in fear that gangs would show up and wreak havoc. The only films, in my lifetime anyway, that I can remember being banned from theatres were The Warriors and The Last Temptation of Christ. Walter Hill had an incredible run of films The Warriors, Southern Comfort, 48 Hrs, Streets of Fire, The Long Riders and my personal favorite Hard Times, Charles Bronson's finest moment!

I saw this movie as an 9 year old when it first came out in 1979. Yes my family were huge fans of Blackploitation movies of the 70s most of which were rated R. And even though he he only lasts the first 15 minutes of the movie, Cleon is still my favorite Warrior. There was a lot of character development in that short screen time. He establishes himself as the undisputed leader when he puts Ajax in his place. He establishes his intelligence when he instructs his soldiers to run against the flow of the crowd allowing them to avoid the cops. He establishes his fighting prowess in his short combat scene where he easily takes out the first 2 or 3 guys before getting swarmed. Then as the rest of the gang fights thier way back home, it just solidifies what a badass he was to be the leader of those guys.

Craig R. Baxley, the rollerskating leader of the Punks, has had a very long career as a stuntman, and director. He directed Action Jackson. He was also the stunt coordinator for The Warriors. His cousin, Gary Baxley, played one of the other Punks, and has had an even longer career as a stuntman than Craig. Gary worked on the 'Dukes of Hazzard' behind the wheel of the General Lee for the death-defying car jumps. Craig's father, Paul, was a very prolific stuntman/stunt coordinator for years. Also worked a lot as a character/supporting actor. During WW2, Paul was a Marine, a Scout and Sniper in the 4th Division. He fought on Kwajalein (Roi-namur), Iwo Jima, Saipan, and Tinian. He received two Purple Hearts, a Bronze Star, and a letter of commendation from the President of the United States. Taught briefly on Parris Island after the war. The Baxleys are a stunt family at least on a par with Yakima Canutt and his sons.

First time I watch your reviews, certainly won't be the last, I enjoy how in depth you get into reviewing and just studying everything about the movie. This movie's special to me, arguably my favorite movie of all time. My father had me watch it when I was very young because he loves it and because one of the actors in it, Marcelino Sanchez (who played Rembrandt) was from our hometown and some folks from my family knew him before he moved to the U.S and filmed this movie. It truly is a timeless classic that I'll never tire of watching, it has a depth that some wouldn't notice, it has a great soundtrack, iconic characters, thrilling action. I always get stunned whenever I hear of people who have never seen it. I also own the PS2 game, which I love as well, it's as great as the movie. And have you ever seen the comic book titled The Warriors: Jailbreak? It's essentially a 5 issue sequel to the movie, not what I'd call great, but entertaining enough and I liked that it gave a pair of characters some good depth in personality by showing us things we hadn't seen before.

I found this critique very interesting but after seeing the deleted scenes, I feel the movie is far from perfect. I saw it when it first came out, and I, too, had questions about who Luther kept calling on the telephone. The deleted scene which I think should have been kept in was Cleon talking to his girlfriend/companion at the beginning of the movie. It's a tender moment she's telling him if he attends the meeting, she may never see him again and he just blows her off. The next part is picking the 9 Warrior delegates and what their jobs will be. And the last part nobody ever talks about, and it was funny as somebody mentioned this in the movie theater, how many gangs have black members with hockey sticks on the beach? Yeah, guns, knives, clubs. But hockey sticks? Right! I still laugh when I watch that scene today!!

Something I haven't heard mentioned about the scene with ajax and the female undercover is where he first goes back to her and starts talking to her. You mention this in the review as the attempted rape scene, but initially, he asks her if she's ok, and if she needs any help. He comes in with a more genuine side, tones down all the bravado, but then she starts basically coming onto him, so he has to rev it all back up again. I see it as a more complex character transition for him as opposed to, oh he tries to rape her. Like he has a good side that he was trying to show but then he's only valued for his other side, show me how you play with the girls, so he breaks that out.

Seeing as you just did The Warriors, I ope this means a possible future review of Hill's Streets of Fire, another cult classic of his.

You mentioned that the story was inspired by a Greek story. Note that is from the Greek story of Anabasis where an army of Greek mercenaries was invited to Persia to support a Persian prince Cyrus to capture the throne. Cyrus was then killed in battle putting this Greek mercenary army totally isolated in Persia and having to fight their way out to the coast. Their success inspired Alexander the Great almost a century later that Persia can be conquered.

My guess about who Luther is talking to is a corrupt NY cop, and making some arrests for some open murder cases and wasting some gangs along the way was part of the plan

Swan was in Xanadu. Also the undercover cop who busted Ajax was Mercedes Rhule.
