"Roland looked up and saw Susan sitting in her window, a bright vision in the gray light of that fall morning. His heart leaped up and although he didn’t know it then, it was how he would remember her most clearly forever after-lovely Susan, the girl at the window. So do we pass the ghosts that haunt us later in our lives; they sit undramatically by the roadside like poor beggars, and we see them only from the corners of our eyes, if we see them at all." I don't know how to articulate how this passage stood out to me personally but it's one of the best that I've read so far. And you definitely feel so much for Roland in this book. He might be one of my favorite literary characters now.

Nice cowboy look on you! I completely agree with everything you said about The Waste Lands. As much as he nailed it with the character work, I was equally impressed with the world-building and atmosphere. I think I can buy into Eddie and Susannah as a couple because I really see Eddie as a very emotional, instinctual type of person. I could see him not thinking twice about his infatuation. This is how great King is as a writer. I feel convinced I know these characters. 😆

My two favorite “scene/chapters” are in these two books. The scene when Roland stands up to Blaine in Wastelands and the scene in the travelers rest where the showdown between the big coffin hunters and the young gunslingers in Wizard and glass. Both give me chills each time

Hated it first time around, just wasn't ready for a flashback story, but it was so good 2nd time around. Uplifting and heartbreaking all rolled in to one. Great reviews! I'm completely with you in that I also wish the beginning of WaG was at the END of Wastelands. But Blaine the Mono has stayed with me since high school as one of the most memorable fantasy characters ever. I'm also super partial to Cuthbert; Cullen from Time of Dread reminds me of him.

I wouldn’t touch a Gunslinger taco, no matter what toppings I could have available to put on it….lol YES FRANK MULLER! I was heartbroken that he was not able to finish the series after Wizard & Glass. The good news is, by book 5, I had his voice fixed so firmly in my mind, that when I would read the book, I “heard” it told by Frank. The whole ka-tet I love. Susannah, though. She really shines for me and King just shined in her development over the series. Regarding Eddie & Susannah’s love story - you mentioned infatuation. Here’s why I think it comes across that way: Eddie is an addict. I think he traded his drug addiction for being addicted to Susannah and her love for him and his for her. W&G is my favorite.(Currently I’ve only read through Song of Susannah) This is the only type of love story I really enjoy. I have an idea on Susan/Susannah - I’ll DM you

Nice review; I completely agree about how well King wrote the romance between Roland and Susan. Just wonderful; so beautiful, moving, heartbreaking. I also always loved the stories and world building set in Roland's world, and anything and everything set in his past, in the world of the gunslingers, with his old ka-tet etc., was just incredible. You're completely right about the atmosphere he created in Mejis being just incredibly well-drawn. Ah gosh. I really hope one day someone's able to make a good screen adaptation of this series. It deserves to be better known.

SPOILERS for book 4: I have kind of a fun Stephen King theory that the cliffhanger between book 3 and 4 resembles (or is a twinner, if you will) of the cliffhanger of Rocket-Man that Annie Wilkes went crazy about how cheap and unfair and cockadoodie the cliffhanger was. Our ka-tet got stuck in a vehicle that travels in the speed of sound (if I recall) and then the book just ends, and the constant readers, just like Annie, are eager to know what happens next. For Annie, RM just easily got our wheres our ka-tet managed to get out by asking Blain stupid questions and were playing silly games and before getting to the obsticle they just got out. The ka-tet's survival of Blain was a deux-ex-machina or ka, working in its stranger ways just like the survival of RM, some might find it cheap or cockadoodie and some, like the others kids in the theater might liked it.
