I actually sold my 39mm Explorer a year or so back because it felt a bit big and bulky. Its replacement was a Santos De Cartier in medium and I adore it. It’s super thin and on the supplied leather strap it feels almost weightless. Great for hot days when your wrists swell (no micro adjustment on the bracelet is a bit of a disappointment, even if it is gorgeous). It’s sporty, classic, you can dress it up or down with relative ease. It’s an absolute stunner and I wear it pretty much every day. Some people fear the inevitable scratches, which it picks up very easily (I’m sure a few stray photons from my desk light have enough energy to leave a mark on it), but it adds to the charm, the first one always hurts, but soon it settles into those scratches and looks worn in, like a well loved pair of leather boots.

I beleive that Breitling is a great brand that for some reason has pieces that are beautiful but with some quality issues. So, I totally understand the thinking process of Adrian. Both TAGs are just amazing, what I would do is sell two pieces of my current collection and combine the "budget" of the two to purchase the Monaco V4 and "justify it" by convincing myself that is not just one very expensive piece but it's the presence of two watches embodied into one. And the Cartier is just a classic piece of watch design, if you can, you should get it! As always great video guys! Keep it up!

Here’s a topic that should be addressed: why can’t we have dress watches with proper water resistance? I love dress watches but also want to be able to swim with any watch I own. Watches I love but can’t justify are basically all Rolex watches. Most go for way over retail and you can get a lot of other watches that are just as good or better for half the price (Tudor, Omega, Grand Seiko, etc). I’d LOVE an Explorer and no date Sub but for a fraction the price I can get a Black Bay 36 and 58 instead.

That’s what android fanboys say about the IPhone… all the brands you mentioned make really good watches but none of them gives you the brand recognition and status symbol that Rolex does. Maybe to you that’s not important.. but to the thousands of people that have purchased Rolex this does matter.. plus the solid build quality,precision and value retention.. it’s totally justifiable to them.
@brett2396
2 жыл бұрын
@@omarion07 yeah but that’s if you could get Rolex watches at retail then your comparison makes sense. But imagine you couldn’t buy a new iPhone at retail and you could only buy them used for 2 times or more retail. Plus an iPhone is $800-1000 while most Android phones are the same price or slightly cheaper. I’m talking about watches that are a fraction of the cost of a Rolex and the difference in price is multiple thousands of dollars, not a few hundred. I get what you are trying to say as a comparison but it’s not the same situation.

Bravo fella's👏. Very much enjoyed this episode, as usual. So.....I would without a doubt choose, the SBN003. I am a fan of Breitling, and the direction that, Georges Kern, is taking them these days, but not that model in-particular. I do feel the draw, of the "Cartier Gang," but not for the "Tank." My choice, would be the "Santos," instead, but I do think the "Tank," gives off an heir of confidence, and the impression, that the man wearing it, has absolutely nothing to prove, to anyone. Much like that of the Rolex, "Explorer." For me, my "unjustifiable," would be any timepiece, w/ a retail greater than $250. I realize that the term luxury, can be interpreted loosely. By my definition, pretty much any watch purchase, is to me, a "luxury." In my daily life, a watch is completely unnecessary. The time is all around us. It's my hobby, and more so an expression of style, than a necessary tool. I value, the engineering, and artistic expression, that go into, the development, and production, of these items. But I value my family more. As much as I covet, these wearable forms of art, and pore over the history, behind the brands and amazing designers, and artisans, that produce them, each time I purchase a new one, something inside, reminds me that the money could have been better spent, on the life that my wife and I, share together. To lessen this feeling of "buyers remorse," I really try to practice restraint, by limiting my purchases, to only a few per year, and by also tying these models, to specific events of importance. Such as birthdays, and anniversaries. I love watches, but I love my amazing life, even more. This life, is only possible though, by my willingness to practice such restraint, and by keeping my priorities in perspective. Hope this makes sense. Here's wishing you, all the best. And please keep up the good work. Cheers...

Adrian have you not heard of the used watch market. You can buy a perfect endurance pro on eBay for between £1500 and £1800. Who buys this kind of watch new, it makes no sense?

I bought my son the light blue Endurance Pro last year. It has been through quite a bit, still works like a charm. I wouldn't really call it a cheap plastic watch, though. I'm tempted to get one myself actually, it's an awesome sports watch imho. On a different note, killer Night Diver! I have the re-issue, which I totally love! And the Dark Lord, omg, so cool too! And the Cartier Tank? Yes, please! High on my wanted list!

I bought the yellow one and it is my go to beach and sport activity watch and agree. Doesn't feel plastic or cheap at all.

It's the PAM968 Bronzo for me. I want one so bad but the premium Panerai charge for a Bronze case is hard to justify, especially when thier Carbon cases can be had for similar money

I tried the tank large on my 7.5”, and couldn’t pull it off. So went with a Santos Medium and amazingly it works for a larger wrist person. I think it’s the square… Also agree about the Breitling. Really want that movement in a cleaner case setup.

I wanted to like the Tank too, but preferred the Santos medium as well. It just sat better on the wrist. Cool watch.

Andrew won’t appreciate this, but the Monaco is my “unjustifiable”. I’ve had it on my wrist several times at the AD, price negotiated, but have never bought it. I love the design, the history, but the price tag is ridiculous. All of that for a modular chronograph on leather? Instead I bought a Speedy FOIS for nearly $1500 less, new from AD! I love the Monaco, but I love it at about $5k CAD, not $7.9k.

Fair cop Mike, but it all depends which movement - if you're talking the Cal 11, that's a piece of history on the wrist right there, a chronograph that won the late 60s tech wars - timeandtidewatches.com/history-the-development-of-tag-heuers-calibre-11-movement/ -The real thing to consider with the Monaco is the fit - like a Big Pilot, it takes a while to get used to - Thanks for watching, Andrew

Host, got a challenge for you, go into Cartier boutique and try on a 27mm yellow gold Cartier Tank Louis, i guarantee you will be shocked how it can actually work. the model you showed i suspect is the larger, over 30 if not 34 mm. Try the small Louis.

An unjustifiable for me is any watch that won’t age well I.e. a ‘classic’ Like most of us who doesn’t have endless funds and other responsibilities in life my watch purchases have to be considered and something that I’ll keep for a long time if not in the family forever. So I admire many forward thinking modern watches from afar, but just can’t justify adding them in
@AboutEffingTime

That’s a great point Duncan. I struggle with this too. I think that’s why I have a “boring” collection nearly all of them are timeless. A

i agree with you here also. However, I feel like the lower price bracket can be reserved for those non classic watches. That way you not hating on yourself down the track for still having that unique piece in the collection cause it did not hurt so much parting with the cash. Heck I even have a few quartz watches (sub $200) in my collection that I still wear and really enjoy. But yeah some are pretty odd looking. But its just fun to do a changeup when the mood takes you.

The Patek Phillipe 5326G is my unjustifiable... What a bold, modern, and timeless take on the Calatrava. I effing love that watch. To me it has everything you could want in a watch. But... I could never spend $80K on a watch, let alone when I am in $500K debt from medical school. One day that doctor money will go to my wrist!

My pretty much unjustifiable watches that I want would be: Tag Heuer aquaracer Tudor BB41 (smooth bezel) Breitling avenger 2 seawolf Breitling superocean 2 It's not because they're to expensive but rather that the value proposition is pretty awful on all of them and buying used watches is not something I'm very comfortable with especially in sweden as all the used vendors are pretty much selling for retail prices and private sellers are so often scammers.

I get bored of hearing about that stuff too. Once in a while when some interesting happens it’s good, but not when it’s just “here’s another expensive watch you can’t buy, in a different colour!”
