My buddy found a lazy way to help MINIMIZE water changing. He puts a foam filter wall on one end of the tank and loads the other side with plants so the fish can’t get to them, then he put a bubbler to transfer water back to the other side. Thats a good way to add plants to an unplantable tank.

Anyone has its way of keeping fish, do not attack someone with a big tank full of plants that never changes water. If the fishes are healthy you have nothing to attack or complain. And honestly, if you keep doing water changes on a 1000 liters tank instead of installing a drip system the fault is yours and it's dumb way to keep fish. I'm on your side here, Kev. I've been keeping fish for over 40 years, and started with a 29 gallon tank with an undergravel filter (still running, btw!) Even though undergravel filters were advertised to keep the water clean naturally, I always did a weekly water change. And I didn't have the convenient test strips like we do now. I had a test kit, but didn't check it every week. Anyway, I started with weekly water changes 40 years ago, and still do them now on all 5 of my tanks. And that includes a 5 gallon, 29 gallon, 40 gallon, 55 gallon and 90 gallon. I've watched some of the videos you mentioned, and some of them at least were honest enough to say what works for them depends on the circumstances. But they never convinced me to try it.

I have over 20 years of experience in fish keeping so here is my thoughts. First you can set up a balanced natural ecosystem with cichlids. All you need is to build a sump using the Father Fish Method of a dirted heavily planted sump which will take care of the nitrates naturally. Most beginners are beginning to question the contemporary advise that you need to do frequent water changes because its laborious and who wants to be a slave to the water change system? Kevin has a lot to lose from his sponsors becuase once people switch to the natural ecosystem of a Walstad or Father fish method of tank set up you realize you don't need all those unnecessary chemicals and products. It's all about the money. Some people its in there best interest that you become a slave to the water change so that you can buy all that stuff. But the reality is that lots of beginners are moving away from the fake plastic aquarium which require lots of labor intensive maintenance to a more natural ecosystem that takes care of itself.

imo, the nature style of fish keeping dont make a whole lot of sense. In the wild, displacement of water happens very regularly. Ponds, lakes and of course rivers discharge loads of old water from evaporation and intake through surface run offs and rain. Which is why aquascapers change a lot of water. This removes debris, organic matter and other particulates in the water column, which ironically mimics rivers, with high turnover rates. Livestock: Also, the ratio of water surface area to fish is enormous. Say in context of our aquarium, could be as high as 10 gallon per fish. If we want to mimic nature, even for still water and ponds, water change is still necessary to mimic nature. Substrate: To mimic deep substrate, we would probably need more than a couple of inches, as in the wild, it could be several feets deep. The elitist nature of no water change and walstadist to preach their au naturale style is ironically not natural. In the wild, nature is not as contained as our glass boxes. It is constantly affected by temperatures, climates, weather change and fauna (birds, mammals and other inhabitants). Its a dangerous slope to preach as a fit for all solution, as some fish keepers could have high metal content, thus needing conditioners, or high calcium content, which accumulates over time. What i do agree with nature style keepers are that they do their own in depth research and studies to back up their claim. We as hobbyist should do our own, and realise everyone on KZitem has an agenda to push, monetary or otherwise (fame etc.). So we should take everything we consume with healthy scepticism and apply ourselves

@@KaveManAquatics If you see most no water change or filterless setups, plants mostly survive rather than thrive. Though most live stock seem to do fine visually. I suspect plants are like sponge filter, where their nutrient uptake is diminish or even impeded once there are too much malm and detritus in their root level. Remember, our glass boxes are self contained, unlike natural water bodies where the new sediments are introduce through erosion, waterflow, run offs etc. replenishing the substrate level while our substrate remains the same in the tank’s entire lifecycle. Also, there are other hormonal and byproduct from respiration by livestock that are not detectable in test kit, which i suspect may saturate the water. What I am trying to say is, if we were to displace “old water” in tanks and “new water” in tanks, both with same chemical compound and parameters, the livestock can notice the difference, and some will induce spawning.

This video made me a believer of this channel. I loved that you say that you’re into keeping fish and that helped me decide. I’m pretty new to this hobby as I was all about my yorkie as a pet. I just know that after watching your videos t what my next steps are for my 66 and 55g tanks. 1. White sand to show off my fish vibrant colors 2. The alternate power supply in case of emergency, like hurricane Irma and 3. The supplement to add to my fish food. Wishing you all the best in 2024!

First off… thank you Kev for the fantastic content! Your videos have really helped me starting into the hobby. I’ve had my tank going about six months now. I was asked by a family member, who has been keeping fish for years, over Easter how I keep my tank so clean. His tank is cloudy, and has lots of algae. I told him I do weekly 50% water changes, and scrub the glass when I do. His response was the “lazy” I only top off my tank., and rarely change the water. I directed him to your channel.

The best and most important word you used there was CONTEXT. That means everything. No two tanks in the history of the world are identical and each needs to be treated accordingly. Now I wouldn't necessarily advocate the premise of weekly water changes being a thing in of itself as there is obviously no science behind that......but if you add context and as you mentioned your nitrates rise to 40+ over that week, then there is the context around those weekly changes. Having said that, I do weekly changes on my big American cichlid tank that doesn't have plants but for all my heavily planted tanks, the water changes are between every 1-2 weeks. Now those planted tanks never rise above 10 nitrates so I can afford to extend it a bit but as you mentioned this is only 1 piece of the puzzle. Oxygen may also deplete in the water column over time due to activity in the tank which people tend to forget. How to easily fix that and also replenish other minerals....water changes

2:44 I am the exception!😂 bought my shrimp and nano fish and had some die off at first, you could tell they weren’t in the best condition though I was left with a neon tetra, 2 galaxy rasbora, and an emerald rasbora I’ve only done maybe 2 water changes in the year it’s been up, water is super clear longways through the tank smells clean BUT IT IS AN UGLY PLANT JUNGLE that doesn’t display my livestock the best To me it’s better for the health of my shrimp than constantly fluctuating parameters. The two Galaxy rasbora I had left bred “naturally” and I randomly found a fry and it’s growing really fast almost just as big as the parents in just a few months. Not trying to disprove anything or anyone Just putting in my 2 cents and somewhat agreeing with KevDawg on basically everything Context is important Everyone has their preference Kev likes to keep fish I like to keep plants with my fish Very different circumstances in terms of water changes and nitrate removal yadayada

For my shrimp tank I have to do water changes. If the water keeps evaporating then the solutes will keep getting more concentrated when water is added but not removed. If I never removed water from my tank my shrimp would die from copper toxicity because I use tap water. I doubt very many of us have their own fresh water spring to access.

you don't need to water change IF you have a HEAVY PLANTED tank. didn't change water for several years, only top up the water. my water is crystal clear, and fish is healthy. tried this method in aquariums as small as 10L up to my main 450L. TDS is overrated, had breeding tanks with 1500+ tds and they did extremely well and the breeding was healthy.

A lot of these no-water / minimal water change advocates fail to realize that water changes don't only remove nitrates but also the many other dissolved solids that accumulate over time. Also, fish love water changes; it's immediately noticeable in their behavior--that is reason enough for regular water changes

I some what agree, but I also know that it depends on the persons setup to what works for them doesn't always work for others cause of the MAIN THING "water" not all water is the same for fish keepers. Some have wells some has county or city water some might have O R water or even creek water no 2 tanks are the same either, so go with your gut & listen to your fish & watch your aquarium. It All comes down to what works for you on what you want to see everyday & how good you are at keeping your fish healthy & everyone happy.

Just found this guy's channel after being in the fish hobby for over 25yrs( Internet fishtube about 8yrs) this dude is wack, ignorant, or just never watched more than 2 videos of any other fish tubers channel. To claim ppl who do low tech or " lazy" fish keeping garentees you'll have cloudy tanks or they are dirty ect. Yes if you got a non planted 120 gallon tank with 45 full grown African cichlids in it, yeah of course it's great way to keep the aggression down but who are all these ppl claiming in that situation otherwise???OF COURSE YOU GOT TO DO FREQUENT AND LARGE WATER CHANGE! I ain't seen ONE person(of actual credit) on here claiming otherwise... BUT for ppl like MD FISH TANKS, who mainly does low tech, no filter, do substrate, not low water changes is perfect example of supposed"lazy fish keeping" yet as far as healthy clean tanks go his are great. I personally have had 30+ planted tanks and while simultaneously breeding fish and selling plants for a long time. I've always pitched plants are everything if you go the whole natural route. BUUUT if you got massive tanks with a bunch of massive fish that's a whole different story. It's like long distant road bikes to BMX bikes. 2 totally different styles and practices between the 2 but they both are riding bikes. Only a ignorant person would claim I'm a bmxer the right way of bicycle riding you long distant road bike guys are just lazy riding long distances in flat surface haha. I thought the online aquarium hobby was the one place where young or old, folks don't start this high school drama to get clicks on their videos. But notice the ones who usually to the videos just to gain clout and subs are usually the ones that have limited or well rounded knowledge in their their field so they resort to the childish drama. You can do that in music, car racing basketball ect but keep that crap out this hobby.
