A small compilation of the WDM-3A locomotive which is one of the oldest class of diesel locomotive on BG network presently in India. With the WDM-2 class loco almost extinct now, the WDM-3A stands out as oldest class. With the manufacturing of many EMD class locomotives by DLW, Varanasi in last few years and the electrification bug catching up everywhere, this class locomotive is on the verge of being extinct very soon. Any Indian Railway fan born in the 80's and 90's will have fond memories of this loco since childhood.
The model name stands for broad gauge (W), diesel (D), mixed traffic (M) engine. The WDM-3A is a later classification of earlier WDM-2C loco and has a maximum speed of 120 km/hr .It's power rating is 3100 HP and has been used to haul the passenger as well as goods (freight) traffic. The newly manufactured WDM-3A locos have high power rating (3300 HP). Soon, the WDM-3A class locomotive is going to be phased out by IR. They will be either scrapped or converted to E-class locomotive or would be sold to some private sector. Few sheds which are currently holding WDM-3A locomotive:
